Robert Class, 82, Expires Sunday

After three months illness, Robert Class, 82, of 1355 Merrifield avenue, died in Pawating hospital at 3:50 Sunday afternoon.

Born Oct. 25, 1862, in St. Joseph county, Indiana, he came to Niles six years ago from Berrien Center. He was a carpenter by trade and was a member of Epworth Memorial Methodist church at South Bend.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles Biederman, of Niles, and Mrs. John Toler, of South Bend; a brother, Richard, of South Bend; and six grandchildren. 

Friends may call at the Kiger funeral home until 2:30 Wednesday afternoon when services will be conducted by the Rev. Theo Eisen. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Clevering, L. Dwayne

NILES—L. Dwayne Clevering, 72, of 36 S. Fifth St., died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at Pawating Hospital, following an illness of nine years.

A former member of the Niles Elks and Exchange Clubs, Mr. Clevering was a retired florist, who has been an antique dealer since 1957.  He lived his lifetime in the area.

On August 3, 1929 in Three Rivers, he married Irene Van De Voorde, who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Miss Berylle Clevering of Niles, and Mrs. R. Whitney Jones, of Conroe, Tex.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Pifer Chapel of the Swem-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Morrow of the First Presbyterian Church of Buchanan officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. at the Pifer Chapel.

Niles News In Brief:  FORMER RESIDENT DIES

Charles H. Cook, 77, who moved from Niles to South Bend in 1906, died at his home in South Bend Saturday night, after a seven-weeks' illness. Mr. Cook had been a pattern maker in the Singer Manufacturing company plant or 27 years. He was born in Germany and came to Niles in 1886.  Don Dec. 5, Mr. and Mrs. Cook celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  Beside his wife Margaret he leaves nine children and 13 grandchildren.  The children are Carl C. Cook, Western Springs, Ill.; William and Henry, South Bend; Leroy, Detroit; Mrs. Joseph Schroer and Mrs. Arthur Craig, Detroit; Mrs. H.D. Marquis and Miss Marguerite Cook, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. George Geissler, South Bend.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence, 1243 West VanBuren street.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery, Niles.

Child is Still-Born

Carol Kay Johnson was still-born at 2:56 a.m. today in Pawating hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johnson, of 105 Betram road.

Also surviving are her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Haze Johnson, of Indian Springs, Ind., and Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Kane, of Niles, and her brothers and sisters, Robert, Ronald, Gloria, Shirley and James, all at home.

Committal services were conducted at 4 p.m. today by the Rev. L. George Beacock, Methodist pastor, at the Pifer funeral home. Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

Turnbo, Martha Ann

Martha Ann Turnbo, 79, died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pulley, 1040 Huntley road, Barron lake.  She had been ill two weeks.

Funeral services will be held in the Pifer funeral home at 2p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Charles Johnson officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. A son-in-law, Arthur Pulley, of Benton Harbor, and five grandchildren survive.

Mrs. Turnbo was born in Wayne county, Tenn., on Oct. 16, 1872, and came to Niles from Waynesboro, Tenn., last May 6.

 

Sherrick, Pearl Ethel

Niles – Funeral services were held Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz., for Mrs. Pearl Sherrick, 84, who died Saturday in Phoenix.

Mrs. Sherrick lived most of her lifetime in Niles until moving to Zephyr Hills, Fla., in 1955 and in 1965 to Phoenix. 

Her husband, Joseph E. Sherrick died in 1957.

Survivors include two sons, Larry of Phoenix and Joseph C. Sherrick of Niles; a sister, Mrs. John Lessor of New Buffalo, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

 

Matthews, Thomas Earl

Thomas Earl Matthews, 70, of 2381 Cherokee Pointe, Greensboro, Ga., passed away this Sunday in his residence.

Thomas was born on Feb. 2, 1930, to J. Earl Matthews and Laura Elizabeth Dougan Matthews.

He is survived by his wife, Gail Matthews, daughter April E. Matthews, Greensboro, son, Kurt Thomas Matthews, Marietta, Ga., a sister Patricia Lewis, Overland Park, Kan., and brother Richard Matthews, Niles

Thomas had recently moved from Niles to Greensboro in 1998.

He served in the Navy from 1948 to 1949 and again from 1952 to 1954, was a member of the Niles Masonic Lodge and a Kawneer 25-year member as well as a member of the First United Methodist Church and Greensboro. He was a Niles High School graduate and an alumnus of Michigan State University.
