Death of W.G. Ferson

Elder Wm. G. Ferson, one of our oldest and best known citizens, died at 4 o'clock this morning at his residence, corner of Fourth and Cedar Streets, in his 82nd year.

Mr. Ferson was born in Gloucester, Mass., March 22, 1809, and came to Niles about the years 1837.  He and the late Bacon Wheeler were in the mercantile business here a number of years, and they had a branch store in Berrien Springs many years ago.  Mrs. Ferson having charge of that store during its continuance.  Mr. Ferson was subsequently in business alone in Niles and closed this about 18 years ago, since which time, until two or three years since, he traveled for an Eastern house.  He lived at his late residence about forty years.  Mr. Ferson's first wife was Margaret Orr, to whom he was married in 1840, and by whom he had three children, a son, now deceased, Mrs. Prof. Miller and Mrs. T.M. Finley, now of Anthony, Kansas.  October 30, 1851, he was married to Caroline A. Coan. by whom he had two children, Mrs. L.G. Hart, of St. Paul, and Emma, now deceased.  Mr. Ferson was a Ruling Elder in the Presbyterian church for many years up to his death.

The time for the funeral is not yet know.  A more extended obituary will probably be prepared later.
