Death of the Hon. Elijah Lacey
The Hon. Elijah Lacey departed this life on Monday afternoon last at 5 o’clock, aged sixty-seven years, and was of the original founders of the town.
Mr. Lacey has reside in this city 33 years, and was one of the original founders of the town. He laid out various plats, now known as Elijah Lacey’s plat. He has been a most worthy and useful citizen, distinguished for his strict integrity, honesty of purpose and for his great liberality to the poor. He never could see this worthy about him suffering for bread. If we mistake not he was the first man ever sent from this county as Representative to the State Legislature, and was elected Senator at the last election. He was the first man elected Mayor of this city. With Mr. Lacey has died many relics of the past, and, without his aid, it will be difficult to write a correct history of the early settlement of this town and county. Thus are passing away all the early settlers, one by one—None will be missed more than Mr. Lacey.
