Death of Miss Lacey

Miss Hannah Lacey, after many years of suffering and helplessness, passed peacefully away at her home in this city, Sunday evening, March 29, 1891.

Miss Lacey was a daughter of Elijah Lacey, the first Mayor of the city of Niles and was born in Richmond, Ind.  At an early age she came to this city, which has ever since been her home.  During the pastorate of the Rev. Alfred Bryant, she united with the Presbyterian church, and entered at once into the active duties and relations of that denomination.  She was constant in her attendance on divine service, a teacher in the Sabbath school, until ill health compelled her to remain at home.

From about the year 1870 she has been unable to engage in the active labor of the church, but has continued to maintain an interest in all its benevolent work and to aid in the maintenance of the Lord’ house, and the building up of that branch of Zion in this city.

Much of her time was spent in reading the best literature, and she was conversant with all the topics of the day, both secular and religious.  Even all the improvements of our own quiet city were read and noticed by her with great interest.

For the last twenty years her life has been so quiet and secluded that only those friends who have seen and talked with her at her own home can testify to her constant cheerfulness and resignation to the Divine will, which ever was shown in her appearance and conversation.

Three brothers, Solon, Granville, and W.K. Lacey, the only surviving members of her father’s family, will mourn their lass with a quiet, tender grief, comforted by the thought that she has entered into that home where “there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.”

The funeral occurred from her late residence on Main street, yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock and was largely attended.
