Mary Van Skiver Dies At Home of Parents

Mary Katherine Van Skiver, 24, died at 3 o'clock this morning at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Van Skiver, 1505 Clarendon avenue.  She had been ill for about a year, her condition becoming serious abut two months ago.

Miss Van Skiver was born Aug. 3, 1911, in Logansport, the family moving to Niles about 14 years ago. She attended Niles high school and afterward was a saleswoman in the Montgomery Ward store.

Funeral services will be in the family home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Charles Kitterer reading the Christian Science service. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Niles News In Brief: VAN SKIVER FUNERAL

Funeral services for Mary Katherine Van Skiver were conducted this afternoon at 2 o'clock in the family home, 1505 Clarendon avenue.  Charles Kitterer read the Christian Science service and burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.  Pallbearers were Kenneth Meyer, Peter Krajci, Vern Wilkins, Fred Gifford, Roy Bachman and Robert Bachman.

FORMER RESIDENT OF NILES PASSES

Solomon Walker, 87, Stricken at Home of Son in Rock Island, Ill.

Solomon Walker, 87, a native of Berrien county, died Friday night at the home of his son, Clyde Walker, in Rock Island, Ill. Mr. Walker, who was born in Niles township, April 19, 1848, had been a lifelong resident of Niles and vicinity until two years ago when he went to his son's home in Rock Island.

Mr. Walker was married in 1876 to Mary Cameron, who survives him. Other surviving relatives are his two sons, Clyde, Rock Island, and David, who lives north of Niles; a sister, Mrs. Maria Smith , of Berrien Center; a brother, David, near Niles; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The body will brought to Niles Sunday night, arriving here at 7 o'clock. It will be taken to the Price and Kiger funeral home where services will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. O.W. Carr, of Stevensville, officiating.

JOHN WALTER DIES AT HIS FARM HOME

Had Lived Near Niles for 50 Years; Ill Two Years With Heart Disease

John W. Walter, who had lived near Niles for the last 50 years, died Friday night at his home, five miles north of here in Howard township. A sudden heart attack, culminating a two year period of illness, caused his death.

Mr. Walter was born May 8, 1866, in Alsace-Lorraine. His parents moved to Indianapolis, and came to Niles in the '80's.  He was married April 17, 1866[sic], to Miss Elizabeth Dickeson.

She survives him. Five children also survive. They are: Mrs. Nicholas Rau, Mrs. Joseph Schwind, Mrs. William Valentine, Mrs. Lester Vandenberg and Mrs. Harry Beehler, all of Niles, and {illegible] grandchildren.  A daughter, Mrs. Mayme Goldfuss, died in 1921.

He leaves also three brothers and two sisters, Michael Walter, Pasadena, Calif.; Fred Walter, St. Joseph; Albert Walter, Mrs. Fred Carroll, and Mrs. Alfred Rost, of Indianapolis.

Services will be held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the Rutherford funeral home, the Rev. G.W. Simon officiating. Niles Elk lodge No. 1322, will have charge of the burial service at Silverbrook cemetery.

Niles News In Brief:  WALTER RITES MONDAY

Funeral services for John Walter, who died Friday night at his farm home five miles north of here, were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock in the Rutherford funeral chapel.  The Rev Robert E. Meader officiated in the absence of Dr. Guy W. Simon, who was [illegible] .  Pallbearers were P.D. Williams, William Smith, Charles Eisenbeal, Thomas Swain, John Huff and Edward Thockenbrod. The burial service was in charge of the Elks lodge, of which Mr. Walter was a member.

Funeral services for Mrs. Flora A. Weaver, 76, who died Saturday at her home in Howard township, will be held in the Price and Kiger funeral chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Weaver was the wife of John Weaver, Howard township farmer, and had lived there for many years.  She was born in Drake county, Ohio.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

ISAAC WELLS DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Widely Known Niles Farmer Expires While Driving on M-60 Highway

Stricken with a heart attack while driving west of Niles this morning, Isaac Wells, 66, died suddenly about 10 o'clock.

Mr. Wells, who had lived on a farm west of Niles on M-60 for the last 15 years, was widely known in and near Niles.  He was the father of Mrs. Clarence Gillette, Chicago road, who survives him.

Mr. Wells had started toward Niles with a truck load of apples. Apparently conscious of his condition, he had pulled to he side of the road. A passing motorist noted his condition and summoned Rutherford's ambulance.

Beside his daughter, Mrs. Wells leaves his wife, Mrs. Nellie Wells, and a sister, Mrs. Glen Meade, of Dowagiac.

Arrangements for the funeral services have not been made.

Funeral services for Isaac Wells, who died suddenly Saturday morning, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. Wells' daughter, Mrs. Clarence Gillette, the Rev. James F. Goodman officiating.  Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.  Pallbearers were Jerome Ease, Mr. Fairchild, James Knox, John Young, Charles Gillette, and I.M. Wells.

Niles News In Brief:  WOOLLET RITES TUESDAY

Funeral services for  Philip Woollet, 79, who ded Sunday in Berrien Center, will b ehld in the Rutherford-Phillips mortuary Tuesday afternoon at 1;30 o'clock. The services will be in charge of the Salvation Army. Mr. Woollet was born in Indiana. He leaves his wife and no other close relatives.  Mrs. Woollet lives in South Bend.

June Margaret Walters, 98, of Niles, died at 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Silverbrook Manor in Niles.

She was born on Jan. 18, 1917, in South Bend, Indiana, to Leslie G. and Maggie L. (Ryan) Fenters. She was graduated from Niles High School, and has lived here all of her life. She was employed for several years in the offices of the former Michigan Wire Goods in Niles.

June was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Niles. She was also a member of AARP and the Lady Elks of the B.P.O. of Niles Elks #1322, and had participated in activities at the Niles Senior Center. She enjoyed golfing and bowling in Niles, and Camping with her family at Sturgis, Michigan. As a young lady, she had a remarkable career in the early days of softball.

On Jan. 12, 1941, in Niles she married Malcolm R. “Mickey” Walters. Mr. Walters served on the Niles City Fire Department, including many years as captain. They celebrated the 51st anniversary of their wedding just before he preceded her in death on March 24, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edward C. Fenters and Gilbert R. Fenters.

June is survived by several nieces and nephews including Craig Fenters, Betty June Sneyd, and Scott Fenters; and by a circle of great friends including her neighbor, Nancy Wegner.

The Graveside Service for June Margaret Walters will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles with the Rev. Raymond Fulbright of Saint John’s United Church of Christ officiating. Contributions in memory of June may be made to Saint John’s United Church of Christ. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
