Truman G. Warren, 82, 500 Laurel Drive, Niles, died Saturday at 2:20 p.m. in his home following a two-year battle with cancer.

The past president of the Niles Rotary Club and the Four Flags area Chamber of Commerce, he was co-owner of Holiday Inn in Plymouth, Ind. He formerly owned both the Four Flags Hotel and the Niles Holiday Inn. Warren was a graduate of Indiana University, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was a charter member of the Signal Point Club and was past president of the Niles Rotary Club.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1906, in Hartford City, Ind., and on Nov. 27, 1938, married Heleyn Retherford. She survives.

Also surviving are daughters Nan Miller of Grand Rapids and Diane Anderson of Saudi Arabia; a sister, Norrine Phelps of South Carolina; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Center Meeting House, Morris Drive, with Dr. Bruce R. Fiol of Marco Island Presbyterian Church, P.C.A., officiating.  Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

Memorial contributions may be given to Life Action Ministries, 2000 Morris Drive. Niles.

"Joe" Wasson Dies Suddenly at Home Today

Clayton "Joe" Wasson, 54, auditor and office manager for the Board of Public Works and former city clerk for nearly five years, died suddenly early today at his home at 552 West Main street.

Wasson, prominent in club circles and well-known in the community, was elected city clerk in April. 1932. He served continuously in that capacity until November, 1936, when he resigned. He joined the BPW that same month.

Wasson was born on Feb. 18, 1898, in Pennville, Ind., He came here 33 years ago from Goshen, Ind., and on Feb. 10, 1921, he married Adele Kehr at the First Presbyterian Church of which he was a member. She survives as does a brother, Claude, of Goshen.

The well-known resident was long active in club activities. He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star and the Elks Lodge.  He was a past exalted ruler of the Elks, past commander of the Legion post, past master of the Masonic . . .[illegible] . .board of trustees for five years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church with the pastor, the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Lemuel T. Waugh

Lemuel T. Waugh, 90, of 2362 Reum Road, died at 3:23 a.m. today in Pawating Hospital, where he had been a patient since May 7. He had been ill two weeks.

Mr. Waugh, a former employe of the Kawneer Company, and a retired farmer, was born Dec. 24, 1872, in MacQuoetta, Iowa.  He came to Niles from Pocahontas, Iowa, in 1928. His wife, Maude, died Oct. 29, 1957.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Herman F. Miller, Niles, and Mrs. Howard M. Johnson, Griffith, Ind.; a son, Floyd, Niles,; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Kiger Funeral Home. The Rev. Gordon D. Everett, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church, will officiate.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Elsie Weimer*

Mrs. Elsie Wiemer, 77, of 1529 Michigan St., died at 10:45 a.m. Monday in Pawating Hospital, where she had been a patient since April 13.

Mrs. Wiemer was born Oct. 11, 1885, in Germany. She came to Niles from Chicago in 1950. Her husband, Kurt, died in 1957.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Margaret Hampel, Niles, and two nephews.

She was a member of the New Apostolic Church and the Golden Age Club.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m .Wednesday in her church. The Rev. Ernest Lindstedt, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Thursday in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the Pifer Funeral Home.

Luther Welch

Luther Welch, 1417 South Jerome street, died at 10 a.m. Friday  while visiting in a Sumnerville home. He had been ill a short time.

Surviving are two brothers, Jess Welch, Niles, and Joseph Welch, Dowagiac. He was born in Fowlerton, Ind., on Aug. 14, 1907, and came here 26 years ago. He was a plumber.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday by Lt. Arthur Homer, commander of the Salvation Army.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Funeral services for Hattie J. Wiars, 83, of 1209 Sycamore St., Niles, are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Nolan R. Williams, church pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Wiars died at 5:15 a.m. Thursday at Pawating Hospital following an extended illness.

Born Oct. 9, 1909, in Niles, she was a lifetime area resident.

On June 15, 1941, in Niles, she married the late Howard G. Wiars, who preceded her in death on March 4, 1988.

She was retired from Woolworth's Department Store after 44 years of service. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church,  Philathea Class of the Church and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include two nephews, Melvin Hurlbutt of Niles and Ray Hurlbutt of Niles.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home.
