Marjory A. “Margie” Steinbauer, 95, of South Saint Joseph Avenue, Niles, died on Friday, June 14, 2013, at West Woods of Niles.  She was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Buchanan to Fred and Louise (Sherwood) Kell and lived in the Berrien Springs and Buchanan area.  On Feb. 19, 1940, she married Charles “Charlie” Steinbauer, and they moved into the house on Saint Joseph Avenue that Charlie’s father built.  Charlie preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1984, but Margie continued to live in that home for more than 70 years.

Margie was employed by Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles and worked for Michigan Bell.  In April of 1947, their son was born, and she decided to become a full-time homemaker, wife and mother.  Margie was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles.  She loved her family and caring for children.
Margie is survived by her stepson, David L. (and Karen) Steinbauer of McKinney, Texas; several step-grandchildren, step-great- & step-great-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and dear family friend, Jo Ann Raatz, of Niles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; son, Edwin Steinbauer; stepson, Carl “Ted” Steinbauer; four brothers; and one sister.

The family will gather privately for services.  Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Donations in memory of Margie may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church.

Flannery, Orval Jr.

Orval Flannery, Jr., 75, of Niles, Mich., died at 11:27 a.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born on July 16, 1937 in Niles to Orval “Mike” and Florentine Elizabeth (Phillips) Flannery, Sr. He was graduated from Niles High School, and lived here all of his life.  He served in the United States Army during peacetime.  He was a machinist in area tool & die shops, most recently for several years at the former Hess plant in Niles.

Orval enjoyed fishing on area lakes and on Lake Michigan, but his greatest devotion was to his family.

He was first married to Sharon Willets.  Later, on May 27, 1994 in Las Vegas, Nevada he married the former Anne E. Bausor, who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Diane Flannery and Michael (and Robin) Flannery, both of Niles; grandchildren Michael Flannery, Jr., Bruce Fergison, Jr., Matt Flannery, Susan Flannery and Dokota Flannery; great-grandchildren Brianna Flannery and Xander McClain; Orval’s sister-in-law, Karen (Mrs. Ronald) Flannery of Niles and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Duane Flannery, and Orval’s brothers, Kenny, Tom, and Ronald Flannery.

A Memorial Mass for Orval Flannery will be celebrated at a later date at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Edwardsburg, Michigan by the Rev. Joe McCormick, O.S.A. of the parish, and will conclude in the churchyard with a flag presentation and “Taps” by the United States Army Honor Guard.  Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Contributions in memory of Orval may be made to Hospice at Home.  Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

The funeral service for Orval Flannery, Jr., who died on May 23, 2013, and whose obituary was published at that time will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles, Mich., with the Rev. Randy Pearman of Bethel Baptist Church in Niles officiating.

Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, and will conclude with Military Honors by the United States Army Honor Guard.

David Farrel VanderPool, 63, of Niles, passed away at home on Sunday, May 26, 2013.

David was born on June 24, 1949 to the late Beckham and Gertrude (Wallen) VanderPool in Garrett, Kentucky.

David was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn (Thompson) VanderPool and brothers Glenn, Bruce, James and Everett VanderPool.

He is survived by his son Jason Hamilton of Jackson, Michigan, siblings Charles (Brenda) VanderPool of Litchfield, Michigan, Juanita Salisbury of Jackson and Linda Cox of Niles and three grandchildren Nyckolas, Bryce and Kadyn.

David’s family will gather for funeral services on Monday, June 2, 2013 at Brown Funeral Home in Niles beginning at noon with a time of visitation one hour prior.  David will be interred at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Shane Barr, 20, of Niles, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at his residence.

Shane Barr was born on Oct. 1, 1992, in Berrien Springs to Gary and Rachel (DeGlopper) Barr.

Shane and Stephanie (Wise) Barr married on July 2, 2011, at a ceremony in Riverside.

He is survived by his parents, wife and three children, Bryson Barr, Clayton Barr and Jonah Wise; two brothers, Gary Rogers, of Hartford, and Brandon (Leslie) Schoolcraft, of Kalamazoo; three sisters, Salina (Matt) West, of Hartford, Mandie Cooley, of Kalamazoo, and Suzzett Schoolcraft, of Springfield, Ill.

Shane enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.  He enjoyed the outdoors but, most of all, spending time with his kids.

Services for Shane will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. with a time of visitation one hour prior at Brown Funeral Home.

Peggy Ann Patterson, 59, of Niles, died at 1:23 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, unexpectedly but of natural causes.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1953, in Niles to Donald Eugene and Betty June (Schanbacher) Harrold.  She graduated from Niles High School and lived here all of her life.  She was employed at Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles for more than 30 years.

Peggy was an avid bowler, participating in area leagues. She was the first female bowler with a perfect 300 score in Niles.  She also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling to the Patterson family reunions in Arkansas.

She was first married to Jeff Mantke.  Then, on May 25, 2005, she married Jimmie B. Patterson, who survives.  Also surviving are her father, Donald Harrold of Niles; step-children, Daniel Patterson, of California, and Rebecca Patterson, of Elkhart, Ind.; and grandchildren, Matthew Blake Thompson and Joshua Allen Thompson.

The funeral service for Peggy Patterson will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.  Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6  until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Contributions in memory of Peggy may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bobo, Ethel

Ethel "Cubie" Bobo, 95, of South Third Street, Niles, died at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Silverbrook Manor, in Niles, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Halbritter Funeral Home, in Niles, with the Rev. Bryant L. Bacon of Mount Calvary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.  A time of visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the funeral home.

On July 18, 1910, in Memphis, Tenn., she was born to David Chambers and Annie Alexander.

She was very proud of her Native American heritage. Previously, she had been employed at the former Bookout Furniture Store, in Niles. Mount Calvary Baptist Church included her in its congregational activities.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Ralph Bobo, who died in May of 1971.

She is survived by a circle of caregivers, fellow residents and her church family.

Memorial contributions, in her memory, may be made to Mount Calvary Baptist Church, in Niles.

Bruce, Raymond Earl

Raymond Earl Bruce, 68, 2358 US-12, was pronounced dead on arrival at Pawating Hosital[sic] at 5:45 a.m. today. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Mr. Bruce was born Jan. 8, 1895 in Benton Harbor. He came to Niles from that city when he was five years of age. He married Lena Stayer Oct. 26, 1921 in Edwardsburg. She survives.

Other survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Bernice Demuth,Mrs. Esther Cox, Mrs. Beatrice Byrne and Mrs. Betty Larsen, all of Niles, Mrs. Marjorie Bertold, Battle Creek, and Mrs. Bertha Hannon, Miami, Fla; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Hollenbeck, Niles; and 18 grandchildren.

He was a member of the Rosewarne Bible Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kiger Funeral Home. The Rev. Allen Robbins, pastor of this church, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.
