Leonard E. Whittaker, 63, of 605 Platt St., died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday in the Michigan Veteran's facility, Grand Rapids, after an extended illness.

A retired employe of Electro-Voice, Inc., Mr. Whittaker was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army.

He was born Feb. 5, 1917-in Bremen, Indiana and had lived in the Niles area since 1945 coming from South Bend.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs Harry Whittaker of South Bend; three sons, Gary L. and Leonard E. Jr., both of Niles and William of Miller, Mo.; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Gwin, of Miller, Mo., and Mrs. Charles Hilderbrant of Olympia, Wash.; four brothers, Nelson of Jacksonville, Ark., Robert of Edwardsburg, Dale of Tucson, Ariz. and Virgil of Arcanum, Ohio; four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Burnside of Kalispell, Montana, Mrs. Lucile Burlingham, Sawyer, Mich., Mrs. Gertrude Davey, Medford, Oregon, Mrs. Dorothy Long of Esparto, Calif., and Mrs. Fred Stump, Goshen, Ind., nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Halbritter Funeral Home with Rev. Paul A. Fisher of the First Assembly of God officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. today.

Lloyd F. Womack, 81, of 3245 US-12 West, Niles, died at 8:50 p.m. Monday at Pawating Hospital.

Lloyd F. Womack, 81, of 3245 U.S. 12, West, died at 8:58 p.m. Monday in Pawating Hospital after an extended illness.

He was a self-employed fruit and vegetable retail salesman and had lived in the area since 1941.

Mr. Womack was born Feb. 13, 1899 in Cleborne County, Ark., and on Sept. 2, 1920, married Blanche Wiggins in Arkansas.

She survives along with three sons, Doyce of Niles, John W. of Dade City, Fla., and Lloyd L. of Danbury, Conn.; four daughters, Mrs. George  (Lou) Kimmell of Berrien Springs, Mrs. Henry (Bobbie) Brelowski and Mrs. James (Betty) Skalla, both of Niles and Mrs. Charles (Estelle) Hinkle, New Orleans, La.

He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday in Halbritter Funeral Home with Mr. Stanley Davis of Michigan City, Ind., officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call between 6 and 8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Pearl L. Wright, 94, of 1418 Sheridan, died at 1:45 p.m. Monday in Fountainview Place of Mishawaka after an extended illness.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Progress Club.
She was born Oct. 29, 1885 in Allegan and had lived in the area since 1916. She was married to Paul Wright who died in May 1960.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joseph (Ruth E.) Starke of Mishawaka; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Halbritter Funeral Home with Rev. William J. Fuerstenau of the First Presbyterian Church officiating.  Burial will take place in Silverbrook Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.

Eleanor N. Edwards, 94, formerly of Sioux Trail in Niles, Mich., died at 7:51 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at West Woods of Niles following a brief illness.

She was born on June 9, 1919 in Niles to Alfred and Lulu (Swartwout) Pfister. She was graduated from Niles High School as Salutatorian of the Class of 1936 at the age of sixteen. She has lived in Niles all of her life, and was employed in the offices of the Berrien County Courts for 20 years, retiring in 1984.

“Eleanore” was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Niles where she served as an Elder and Deacon, and sang in the Choir. She was also a member of the Niles Service League, and several area bridge clubs. She enjoyed flower gardening, and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, but her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On June 5, 1943 in San Francisco, Calif., she married CPO Hubert H. Haslett, U.S.Navy. They celebrated thirty-one years of marriage prior to his death on July 8, 1974. Later, on Dec. 27, 1986 in Niles she married Howard J. Edwards who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, well-known Niles artist Alfred Pfister and Lulu Pfister, a sister, Ann L. Klute and a brother, Alfred H. Pfister.

Surviving family includes her children, Stephen (and Gaylene) Haslett of Plainwell, Mich., William (and Diane) Haslett of Niles, Marilyn (and Tom Hoff) Haslett of Niles, and Robert (and Monica) Haslett of Temperance, Mich.; Howard’s children, Pamela (and Philip Headley of Annandale, N.J., and Beverly Jane Mather of Ringwood, N.J.; grandchildren, Erik (and Cheri) Locker, Adam (and Julie) Locker, Mattie (and Drew White) Haslett, Doug Haslett, Mindy (and Chris) Hahaj, Jake (and Heidi) Mucha, Maggie Hoff, Malorie (and Scott) Ninemeier, and Michael Haslett; great-grandchildren Tyler, Paris, Lily, Ashton, and Kellan; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Mrs. Alfred) Pfister of Grand Haven, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Eleanor Edwards will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles with the Rev. Fran Lane-Lawrence of the church officiating. Committal will follow at the Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Contributions in memory of Eleanor may be made to The Foundation of the First Presbyterian Church.

Warren E. Lutin, 87, of Niles, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012.

He was born on Feb. 25, 1925, in Hartford, to Clyde and Pearl (Fredericks) Lutin.

On Dec. 21, 1951, Warren married Margaret Truhn at a ceremony in South Bend, Ind. After serving his country in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, Warren returned home and studied engineering at the University of Notre Dame until he went to work for Bendix, where he stayed until his retirement.

Warren enjoyed traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and vacationing at his family cottage at Gravel Lake in Marcellus. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Niles and the Niles American Legion.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Lutin; and his siblings.

Warren is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Niles; two sons, Richard (Charlotte) Lutin, of Indianapolis, and George Lutin, of Niles; a daughter, Barb Lutin, of Niles; grandchildren Ann (Jeff) Bromley, Jessica (Ryan) Glassman, Michael Lutin, Patrick Lutin, Kiera Lutin and Estelle Lutin; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at First Baptist Church, 1446 E. Main St., Niles.

Memorial contributions may be made in Warren’s memory to First Baptist Church of Niles.

NILES - Carolyn June Hibbard, age 90 years, of Niles, Michigan died at 12:10 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Hospice House of Holland, Michigan following a brief illness. She was born on December 8, 1922 in Niles to Allan W. and Weltha A. (Scott) Morehouse. She was graduated from Niles High School in 1941, and has lived here all of her life. She was employed for many years at Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles. Carolyn was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles, and a member of its Suzanna Wesley Guild. When her children were young, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and volunteered as an adult leader for the Girl Scouts of America. More recently, she has enjoyed cross-stitch, word puzzles, reading, traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and the Mediterranean, and her pet cats. On December 7, 1946 in Niles she married Robert Warren Hibbard, who preceded her in death in 1981. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Alan Morehouse and sisters, Pauline Gosline, Thelma Allen, and Esther Mantke. Surviving family includes her daughters, Carolyn Gail Hubbard of Holland, Michigan and Carol Ann (& Mark) Swoyer of Watertown, Massachusetts; a grandson, Eric Ryan Swoyer of San Francisco, California; a brother, Robert (& Audrey) Morehouse of Niles, and several nieces and nephews. The family of Carolyn June Hibbard will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. They will also gather privately on Wednesday at the graveside in Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles for committal services with the Rev. Cathi Huvaere of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating.
