William E. Reum, 73, of 1529 N. 5th St., was pronounced dead on arrival at Pawating Hospital at 6:12 p.m. Thursday. He had been ill three years.

Mr. Reum was born June 10, 1889, in Niles, and lived his lifetime here. He retired from the National-Standard Co. in 1855. He married Clara H. Schneider May 15, 1917, in Niles. She survives.

Other survivors include two brothers, Herman F., Niles, and Clyde, Espanola, N.M.; and four sisters, Mrs. Larned Williams and Mrs. Lola Scholl,, both of  Englewood, Calif., and Mrs. Morris Yonker and Mrs. John Jaroch, both of Niles.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ (Evangelical and Reformed), the Brotherhood of the church, and the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kiger Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Fraser, Pastor of his church, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Traffic Fatality Second for City Within a Month
Arthur Richardson, 82, Struck Down at East Main and Thirteenth

The second traffic fatality within 30 days within a three block area on East Main street occurred here early Friday night.

Arthur Richardson, 82 of 1306 East Main street, died a 9:20 p.m Friday at Pawating Hospital of injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile at 8:10 p.m Friday at the intersection of East Main and Thirteenth streets. The death was the 11th traffic fatality in Berrien County this year.

Niles police said Richardson was struck by an automobile driven by Russell J. Leach, 43, of rural route two, Edwardsburg.

Leach told police that he was driving east on Main street and that he did not see Richardson who started across the intersection walking south.

Richardson is believed to have walked directly into the path of Leach's car. He was struck by the front bumper and knocked to the pavement.

Leach estimated that he was driving between 20 and 25 miles an hour, and police verified his statement.  Officers said skid marks showed that Leach stopped his car almost immediately after the impact.

Richardson never regained consciousness at Pawating Hospital. His injuries were listed as a skull fracture and a compound fracture of the right leg.

Leach was released on his own recongnizance[sic] and ordered to remain available for contact pending a report by the county coroner.

The last traffic fatality here occurred Freb. 19 two and a half blocks from the scene of the fatality last night. The accident in the 1500 block on East Main street resulted in the  death of five-year-old Phyllis Brock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Brock, 1631 Taft street.

According to Coroner Franklyn G. Rice Jr., Mr. Richardson died from a fractured skull and cerebral concussion suffered in the accident.

He was born in Raleigh, N.C. and came here from Chicago 30 years ago.  He was a laborer.

Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Lela Hubbard of Niles; and one brother, Ralph of Battle Creek. A nephew and niece also survive.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m.  with the Rev. Richard Alexander of the Mount Calvary Baptist officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Grant H. Ridley
Sept. 1, 1868-Feb. 20, 1953

Grant H. Ridley, 84, of 2374 Yankee street, died suddenly at his residence at 2 p.m. Friday.

Ridley, who was a carpenter by trade moved to Niles 44 years ago from Sturgis.  he was born in Wayne County, N.Y., Sept. 1, 1868, and was married Oct. 5, 1890, in Sturgis to Neva Williams, who survives. Also surviving are: a son, Howard, Niles; four grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kiger Funeral Home with the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Darcy F. Salisbury

Funeral services for Darcy F. Salisbury, 59, of 743 Maple St., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Kiger funeral Home. Dr. Maurice McKean, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Masonic graveside rites will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at 4:20 a.m. today at Pawating Hospital, where he was taken by the Niles city police and the fire department rescue squad. He suffered an apparent heart attack at 4:09 a.m. at the National-Standard Co., where he had been employed 17 years as a machinist.

Mr. Salisbury was born Aug. 13, 1902, in Dayton. He came to  Niles from Buchanan 26 years ago. He married Edna Dellibac Oct. 24, 1936, in Peoria, Ill. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Tom, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Jackson, Indianapolis, Ind.; and a brother, Harold, Roseland.

He was a member of the First Methodist Church, St. Joseph Valley Lodge No. 4, Free and Accepted Mason, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Theodore D. "Ted" Schrader

Funeral services for Theodore D. "Ted" Schrader, 80, of 1911 S. Third St., Niels, are schedueld afor 2 p.m. Tuesday at Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray C, Cunningham of Niles, the Rev. Raymond S. Anderson of First Baptist Church and the Rev. Kris Johnson of Bertrand Bible Church officiating.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Schrader died at 1:55 a.m. Saturday at Berrien General Hospital following an extended illness.

Born Nov. 20, 1912, in South Bend, he was a resident of the area all his life.

In December, 1931, he married the former June Clara Keck, who survives.

He retired in 1973 after 41 years of service at Tyler Refrigeration. He was a charter member and long-time Missionary Treasurer of Bertrand Bible Church.  He was a member and former chaplain of the Tyler Foreman's Club.

Other survivors include two daughters, Lila Coates of Dundee, Ill., and Karen Parker of Smyrna, Tenn.; two sons, Tim Schrader of Niles and T. David Schrader of Niles; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Byrd of Berrien Springs and two brothers, Ed Schrader of Niles and Joe Schrader of Niles.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Halbritter Funeral Home.

George Wilhelm Schrumpf

GEORGE SCHRUMPF, RAILROADER, DIES

George Wilhelm Schrumpf, 70, life-long resident of Niles, died this morning at 9:15 in his home at 1120 Lake street.

Schrumpf, foreman of a Michigan Central railroad crew, was born here June 12, 1872. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance Engineers and of the Pioneers association.

His widow, the former Frances Kaiser to whom he was married in Niles Nov. 18, 1896, survives with two children, Mrs. Milllie E. Bremer and Lawrence Schrumpf, both of Niles.

Rites Thursday

He also leaves three brothers, Henry and Arthur Schrumpf, Niles, and Louis Schrumpf, Edwardsburg; two sisters, Mrs. E.H. Zimmerman, Niles and Mrs. Ora Fidler, Edwardsburg, and two grandsons, William Bremer and Jon L. Schrumpf, Niles.

The body will be taken from the Price and Kiger funeral home to the family home where friends may call Wednesday and Thursday morning. The funeral is set for Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in St. John's Evangelical church. The Rev. Theo Eisen wil officiate, with burial in Silverbrook cemetery.
