DEATH CLAIMS THREE FORMER NILES RESIDENTS

 

During the week-end three former Niles residents died in distant cities. In each case plans were made for bringing the bodies to Niles for burial.

Charles Richardson, a son of Dr. and Mrs. J.D. Richardson, deceased, died on Saturday in Grand Rapids. The body was brought to Niles this afternoon and was taken directley to Silver Brook cemetery where burial took place in the family lot. Rev. James E. Wilkinson conducted the committal service. Mr. Richardson is survived by a widow who accompanied the body to Niles; and by a brother, William L. Richardson, of Chicago, who is at present in California, and by a sister, Mrs. Eugene Cook, of Kalamazoo, who is visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Parkin.  A nephew, and another neice[sic] reside in Chicago.

William Beall

The body of William Beall was brought to Niles today from Houston, Texas, where he died on Sunday, and was taken to the Troost and Augustine undertaking rooms. The funeral services will be held there Wednesday.  A telegram announcing his death was received this morning by W.R. Wills.

Mr. Beall was a son of Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Beall, prominent pioneer residents of Niles, both now deceased. Mr. Bealll, who is better remembered in Niles as "Bud" Beall, has resided in Houston for a number of years. He had been in ill-health for two years. He was about 65 years of age.  He is survived by a widow, who accompanied the body to Niles, and by three sons. Selby Wills, of Niles, is a nephew of the deceased.

Mrs. William Levering

Mrs. Catherine Mann Levering, wife of William Levering, formerly of Niles, died on Friday at Albuquerque, New Mexico, where the family had resided for three years leaving Niles for Albuquerque in the hope of benefitting her health. The body will be brought to Niles for burial although the exact time is not known today.  Mrs. Levering was a daughter of James and Cora Mann, of Niles, who survive her, as do two sisters, three brothers and two children.


Beall, Bessie

Bessie Beall
April 4, 1882 – Dec. 15, 1971

NILES – Mrs. Bessie Beall, 89, of 214 N. Seventh St., died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in Pawating Hospital, where she was admitted Tuesday evening.

Born April 4, 1882 in Niles, Mrs. Beall had lived her all her life. Her husband, George,  died a number of years ago.

Mrs. Beall was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Pifer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Trenery of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Rev. Arlan Schlundt of St. John’s United Church of Christ o officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home tonight.

Beall, Frank

Frank Beall

Frank Beall dies, a victim of the Great White Plague 

Lived in Niles, nearly all his life; leaves, widow and eight children.

Frank Beall passed peacefully away this morning about 12:30 at his home in Hickory Street, a victim of the great white plague after being confined to his bed for three weeks and conscious almost to the last.

Mr. Beall had lived in Niles nearly all his life, coming here when very young from his birth place in Carolton, MO. He was born July 2, 1859.

He is survived by a widow and eight children, Mrs. A. Herron of Jackson, Willard, Harold, Gladys, Beryl and Merwin of this city, Lloyd and Earl of Detroit, also two sisters and two brothers, Miss Bertha Beall residing at the old homestead, Mrs. J.C. Palethord of Kokomo, IN, James of Michigan City, and Forrest of Deer River, Minn.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church and of Camp 900, Modern Woodmen of America.

Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock., Rev. George Huntington will officiate.

George Beall, city fireman, drops dead in home yard today

Is found by wife when she returns from trip down town.

George Beall, 50, a member of the Niles Fire Department died suddenly about 12:30 today in the yard in the rear of his home at 17 N. Seventh Street. He was found by his wife. Mrs. Bessie Adams Beall when she returned from a shopping trip. Mr. Beall’s death is attributed to a heart attack. He had been at home today to spend the day, this having been his day off duty. Yesterday he was at work as usual.This morning he complained of some heart trouble and a physician was summoned but later in the morning he had quite recovered apparently and Mrs. Beall went down town about 12 o’clock he was sitting on the from porch of the home and engaged in a brief conservation with John Walters a neighbor, and made no complaint of illness.Mrs. Beall returned home shortly about 12:30 and found him lying in the yard. By the time a physician reached the house Mr. Beall was dead. In fact, it is believed that he was dead when Mrs. Beall reached him. Mrs. Beall is an almost complete state of collapse and under the care of a physician.

Mr. Beall was a son of Mrs. and Mrs. Nathaniel Beall, both deceased and pioneer residents of Niles. He was born on a farm on Lake Street. He is survived by his widow and by one sister, Mrs. Viva Beall Roderick, wife of Harry Roderick of South Bend. Mrs. Roderick came to Niles early this afternoon.

Eight months ago today or on Jan. 8, as Mr. and Mrs. Beall were returning to Niles form South Bend with her mother, Mrs. Henry Adams, the latter became Ill with a heart attack and died in the care before they reached their home.

The funeral arrangements for Mr. Beall are not completed.

Mr. Beall had been a member of the Niles Fire Department for two years.

Harold Beall, 48, stricken Sunday.

Harold Beall, 48, lifelong resident of Niles, died Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in his home, 16 North Seventh Street, he had been ill about six months.

Born in Niles Nov. 30, 1894, he had been employed 21 years in the office of the National Standard Company. He was treasurer of the Elks lodge and was a past master of St. Joseph Valley lodge No. 4 F. and A.M. He also was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving is his widow, the former Maybelle Eunice Perry, Elkhart, to whom he was married in South Bend in 1918.

He also leaves three children, Donald Eugene Beall, aviation cadet in training at Maxwell Field, Ala.; Pvt. Harold Keith Beall, Miami, Fla., and a daughter, Nancy Jean Beall, at home.

Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Lillian Beall, Jackson; three sisters, Mrs. Edwin S. Williams, Jackson; Mrs. Genevieve M. Porter of Indio, Calif. and Mrs. Clay Young, San Antonio, Texas, and three brothers, Lloyd M. Beall, Northville, Mich.; Lieut. Irl V. Beall, Lakewood, O and Seaman Merwin F. Beall, Ellis Island, NY.

Service Wednesday.

Friend’s may call Tuesday afternoon and night in the Price and Kiger chapel. The funeral is set for Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the Elks temple, when officers of the lodge will officiate. Member of the Masonic Lodge will conduct the committal rites at Silverbrook cemetery.

The body will lie in state Wednesday afternoon in the Elks Temple from 1 until the services.

 

Beall, James

He dies of injuries

Death of James Beall is deeply regretted by many.

Of sterling worth

Had been and employee of the Michigan central 22 years: body brought from Michigan City to Niles.

James M. Beall died at the Pullman hospital, Michigan City, Friday night at 9:45.  Mr. Beall for many years an engineer on the Michigan Central railroad was injured Wednesday morning Dec. 15, by a collision of engines at a crossing Kensington, In, which his engine was derailed by a transfer engine.

He was carried to the Pullman hospital and while he was never able to speak, it is thought that he regained consciousness for some time and there had been hopes of his recovery.

An X-ray examination showed that the 8th vertebrae of the spine, being injured was the cause of death.

Mr. Beall was born on the old homestead in Niles Township, Northeast of the City, December 26 1869. He was a member of the Masonic order and the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers.

He is survived by his widow, a stepson, Frank, two sisters, Miss Bertha Beall of this city and Mrs. J. E. Palethrope of Kokomo, IN, and a brother, Forest Beall of Deer River, Minn.

The body arrived her Saturday night and funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 from the Baptists Church. Interment was made in Silverbrook Cemetery in charge of the Masonic Order. Rev. D. G. Blair pastor of the Congregational Church of Michigan City, of which Mr. Beall was a member officiating.

Mr. Beall’s death has caused great sorrow to his many friends, all of whom speak highly of his sterling worth.Mr. Beall had recently completed a handsome bungalow on his property and had intended it as his future home plans had been made to entertain his family and friends at the Christmas dinner. He was to have gone on a three months vacation after the trip which proved fatal.He had started to work for the railroad 22 years, previous to the day of the accident. Which was upon his birthday.

Maybelle (Perry) Beall

Mrs. Maybelle E. Beall, 68, of 15 N. 7th St., died at 8 a.m. today in her home, following a one-month illness.

Born in Chicago, Ill., May 19, 1899, Mrs. Beall moved here from Wisconsin in 1918.

On Nov. 23, 1918, she married Harold Beall, in South Bend, Ind. He died Feb 28, 1943. 

She is survived by a son, Donald of Brookfield, Mass; a daughter, Miss Nancy J. Beall of Niles; two grandchildren, a great-grandson, and a bother, Clifford Perry of Ispheming.

Funeral services will conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home with the Rev. John Wyngarden pastor of the First Presbyerian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Friday.
