Mrs. J.C. Cuthbert dies at farm home

Passes away at Bend of River Residence Early Thursday evening.

Mrs. Jemima Dressler Cuthbert, wife of John C. Cuthbert, died last evening at 7:40 in the bend of the river neighborhood. Mrs. Cuthbert had been in ill health for several weeks. On last Monday morning she suffered a stroke of paralysis and never fully regained consciousness.

Mrs. Cuthbert was born on Portage Prairie in Bertrand township on May 18, 1864, a daughter of Casper Gelnett and Sarah Ellen Shetterly Dressler and grew to young womanhood there.  She was married to Mr. Cuthbert in Buchanan in 1889. for the first few years following their marriage they resided in Chicago.   Upon returning in Michigan they located on a farm at Glendora and resided there until 1910 when they moved to the farm where her death occurred.

Mrs. Cuthbert is survived by her husband, one daughter, Miss Ruby, who is the teacher of the St. Joseph Valley School North of Niles and by the following, sisters and brothers, Mrs. Catherine Boone, Buchanan, George Dressler of Bakertown, Levi J. Dressler of Perth, N.D, and Mrs. Mary Rough of Niles.

Mrs. Cuthbert was an active member of the Bend of the River grange.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday, afternoon at 2:30 in the Troost and Augustine chapel. The Rev. g. W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be made in Silverbook Cemetery.

Cuthbert, Donna (Domer)

Donna J. Cuthbert
June 29, 1927-May 20, 1950

Mrs. Donna Jean Cuthbert, 203 South Fourth Street, died this morning at 2:15 a.m. in Billings Hospital, Chicago, after an illness of one week. Mrs. Cuthbert’s death was due to leukemia.

Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Domer and her husband, Dale, all of Niles. Mrs. Cuthbert was born in Baker, ND on June 29, 1927 and came here in 1937 from North Dakota. She was employed by the Simplicity Pattern company.

Friends may call at Pifer’s funeral home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. L. George Beacock, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Cox, Shirley Maria

Shirley Mae Cox
Nov. 5, 1928-Sept. 10, 1929

Shirley Maria Cox, 10 months, only daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Wesley Cox, 55 Marmont Street, died this morning about 7:30 in Pawating hospital where she was taken yesterday afternoon. She became ill on Saturday and spinal meningitis developed. She is survived by her parents and by two brothers, Frank and Lawrence. The funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Troost and Augustine Chapel. The Rev. A. C. Shaw, pastor of the Christian Church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silverbrook cemetery. The child was born in Niles, Nov. 5, 1928.

Courser, Shirley Ann

Shirley Ann Courser
Feb. 12, 1933 – Dec. 31, 2003

Mrs. Shirley Ann Courser, 70, of Central Avenue, South Bend, died Dec. 31 in her home after an illness.

Her husband, Durward Blaine died October 1990. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Fredrick Amon and Cleland Amon, George Amon; and sisters, Betty Kirschbaum on June 19,1 995 and Patricia Skipper.

She is survived by sons, Dale Ray Miller of Pensacola, Fla., Richard Dennis Miller of South Bend, John Howard Miller of Niles, Frederick Blaine courser and David LeRoy courser, both of South Bend; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Maynard of St. Joseph, Margaret Treesh of South Bend, Nancy Cavitt of Niles; and brothers, LeRoy Amon of Riverdale, Ga.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Former Niles Resident Dead

The body of Mrs. Reuben Corwin of Dowagiac, who died on Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital, Mishawaka, was brought to Niles this afternoon and taken to the Troost Brothers undertaking chapel where private funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Burial will occur at Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. Corwin was formerly Miss Maude Zimmerman, a daughter of Richard Zimmerman who died here seven months ago. She was 33 years of age. She is survived by her husband, four children and by four brothers. The latter are Elmer and Walter Zimmerman of Niles, Alfred of Iowa City and Wilbur of Cleveland. Alfred and Wilbur are expected in Niles this evening.

Corwin, Mary A. "Orletti" (Geyer)

Death of Mrs. Athur Corwin

Mrs. Orlettie Corwin, 1890 Hickory Street, Wife of Arthur Corwin, died on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock in their home from a stroke of paralysis suffered more than four months ago. Mrs. Corwin was 53 years of age, residing in Niles for the past 12 years coming her from Boyne City. She is survived by her husband who is a contractor and builder and by four children who are Mrs. Fern Jones of Roseland, IN, Heston and Violet Corwin of Niles and Mrs. Gladys Burdue, also of Niles, and by a sister and four brothers as follows, Frank Geyer, Petoskey, Heston and John Geyer of Boyne City, T. J. Geyer of Lansing and Mrs. Ellen McLean of Galien. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from the Troost and Augustine Funeral home on N. Second Street. Burial will be made in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Corwin, Arthur Melville

Arthur Corwin Funeral Tuesday.

Services for Arthur M. Corwin, 65, of 304 Water street, who was found dead beside his car at 11:30 Saturday morning near Seventeenth and Maple Avenue where he was working on a carpenter’s job  at the time, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 in the Pifer Funeral Home, the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster, pastor of the first Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Death was believed to have occurred at 9:30 Saturday morning and was believed caused by a heart attack.

He was born Oct. 26, 1878 in Boyne City, and came to Niles in 1919.

Surviving are the wife, Claudia; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Burdue and Mrs. Violet marks, both of Niles, and Mrs. Fern Jones, Roseland, Ind.; a son Heston Corwin, Niles; 18 grandchildren and two brothers, Earl Corwin, Niles and Lon Corwin, Nebraska

Corwin was past commander of the Knights of Pythias and past president of the Carpenter’s union No 1033.

CORWIN RITES

Services for Arthur M. Corwin, 65, of 304 Water street, who was found dead Saturday morning, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 in the Pifer funeral home by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Pallbearers were Don Dennison, R.L. Vernier, George White, H.E. Cross, William DePoy and Harry Fellas. Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.
