Sondra Lee Moore

    Funeral services for Sondra Lee Moore, 59, 929 S. Third St., Niles are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home in Niles by the Rev. Nolan Williams of Wesley United Methodist Church.
    Mrs. Moore died Sunday at 2:30 a.m. at home of natural causes.
    She was born Sept. 3, 1938 in Buchanan.
    In 1973 in Niles, she married Robert Moore, who survives.
    Mrs. Moore worked in administration at Silverbroook Manor in Niles.  She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Niles Elks Lodge, and Ladies Auxiliary of the Niles Eagles Lodge.
    Survivors include a daughter, Christina Vogelsang of Clarksville, Tenn.; two sons, Charles Vogelsang of Clarksville and Craig Vogelsang of Niles; five grandchildren; her mother, Winona Raven of Niles, four sisters, Jeanne Sherman of Venice, Fla., Marian Mattson of Vero Beach, Fla., Charlene Ridenhour of South Bend, and Sherry Noland of Niles; two brothers, Robert McKeel of Cassopolis and Edward McKeel of Niles; and four step-sons, Mark Moore of Park Hall, Md., Randall Moore of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jeffrey and Christopher Moore, both of Niles.
    Friends may call Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Drug Awareness Program through the Niles Elks Lodge.

Amy Faye Olvera
April 5, 1959-May 4, 1998

    Funeral services for Amy Faye Olvera, 39, 1427 Sioux Trail, Niles, are Thursday at 2 p.m.  at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, by the Rev. Dr. Ronald H. Wakeman of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.
    Mrs. Olvera died Monday at 9:15 p.m. at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. following a brief illness.
    She was born April 5, 1959 in Knoxville, Tenn., and had lived in Niles for two years, coming from Knoxville.
    On Jan. 8, 1982 in Knoxville, she married John R. Olvera, who survives.
    Mrs. Olvera received a bachelor of arts in music performance in 1981 from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.; and received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee in 1987.
    She was a professional oboist and formerly performed with the Oak Ridge Symphony and Knoxville Symphony Orchestras: and was a member of Pi Tau Sigma National Honorary Mechanical Engineering Fraternity.
    Mrs. Olvera was currently employed as an engineer at the Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant.
    Survivors include a son, Ian James Olvera, at home; her father, James R. Rhea of Knoxville; a sister, Mary Lynn Lucas of Knoxville; and a brother, Lauren Jackson Rhea of Hamilton, Ala.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Anastasia Claire Olvera, who died in infancy in 1996; and her mother, Annalynn Rhea in May of 1993.  Friends may call Thursday from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Richard Philips "Dick" McCally
Oct. 9, 1932-May 2, 1998

    Graveside services for Richard Phillips "Dick" McCally, 65, of Beaverton, Ore., are Wednesday at noon at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, by John McCally, brother of Stephen Ministry.
    Mr. McCally died Saturday, May 2 at 12:01 a.m. at his home in Oregon, following an extended illness.
    He was born Oct. 9, 1932 in Niles. He lived in Beaverton since 1965, moving there from Detroit.
    On May 6, 1956 in Ferndale he married the former Lois J. Mitten, who survives.
    Mr. McCally graduated in 1956 from Michigan State University, East Lansing, earning a bachelors of arts in business, and serving in the ROTC. He continued his military service in the U.S. Air Force.
    He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1994 as staff auditor, having served for 25 years.  He enjoyed his family and helping his neighbors.
    Survivors included two daughters, Barbara Myers of Sandy, Ore. and Patricia Monteith of Port Townsend, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and a brother, John McCally of Minneapolis, Minn.
    There will be no visitation; arrangements were made at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Casey Eye Institute, Portland, Ore.

Edward Whetstone
Died Dec. 10, 1876

--Mr. E. Whetstone, long a resident of this city, died at his residence on Sunday last, aged about 80 years. Mr. W. was from Germany.  He was a soldier under Napolean and was in his army during the Russian campaign.  His history would be interesting.

--Edward Whetstone, one of our oldest German citizens, died last Sunday night. He had resided in this city twenty-two years, and was seventy-two years of age.  His funeral took place Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended.

Miss Clara Mack
April 2, 1866-May 6, 1920


    The announcement of the passing away of Miss Clara Mack, will bring sorrow and sadness to many hearts, for she was universally beloved by old and young alike. So full of kindness and thoughtfulness--her life has been a beautiful lesson of unselfish devotion and loyalty to others and she will be sadly missed in all the organizations to which she belonged, as well as by all who were touched by her sweet life.
    Practically her whole life has been spent in Niles--a loyal member of St. John's church--and of the Charity society and in all of her associations, club life and neighborhood relationships, she has always conscientiously and faithfully done her part, for the betterment of mankind.
    We feel that lives like hers are needed here on earth--would that there were more like her--but God in His infinite wisdom knows best and has called her into a wider sphere which she is fully prepared to fill.
    Her illness was only of a few days' duration.  Last Friday afternoon she was taken suddenly ill while out with her friends and had gradually grown weaker, in spite of all the medical aid and loving care given her, until she passed peacefully away at 3:30 this morning at her home, 406 North Fourth street. She is survived by her mother and sister--Mrs. Frank Porter of Lansing--who, with her husband, were with her when the final summons came.
    She will be laid away in Silver Brook cemetery on Saturday.  Burial service will be private.

Bertha M. Greenfield
February 27, 1887-December 25, 1948


    Bertha M. Greenfield, of Chicago, mother of Frank and James Bruce of Niles, died at 8:10 p.m. Christmas day in the South Shore Hospital, Chicago. She had been ill since November.
    Also surviving are four grandchildren and one great-grandson.  Mrs. Greenfield was born in Toronto, Canada, February 27, 1887, and moved to Chicago from Toronto 46 years ago. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chicago.
    Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home where services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, pastor of the First Presbyterian church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
