Varnum, John

John Varnum
June 25, 1778-July 23, 1836


OBITUARY--Departed this life on Saturday morning, the 23d inst. in Niles, at an advanced age, Hon. John Varnum, formerly of New Hampshire, and afterwards a resident of Massachusetts; where for his superior talent and virtues he was chosen one of their representatives to Congress.  He has left a wife, and children to mourn his regretted death.  To them it may be consolatory to know that here as a citizen he was esteemed, honored, and beloved; as a public functionary he was rewarded with the confidence and faith of all.  His loss is deeply regretted and will be long felt.

Ashton, Samuel

Samuel Ashton
Nov. 10, 1890-June 8, 1950


    Samuel Ashton, of Barron lake, died at 12:15 a.m. today in his home.
    Surviving are his widow, Pearl; a son, Gregg Ashton, and a daughter, Mrs. John Romanski, both of Barron lake; four grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs.Henrietta Pitner, of Atlanta, Ga.
    Ashton was born in Williamsburg, Kan., Nov. 10, 1890, and came here from Kansas.  He had lived most of his life in this vicinity.
    Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday by the Rev.  G.A. Steeby, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Young, Hazel Watson (Cross)

Mrs. Hazel Young
April 14, 1897-Aug. 25, 1950


    Mrs. Hazel Young, 53, of rural route six, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Del Vista sanitarium, Plainwell, after an illness of eight months.
    Mrs. Young was born April 14, 1897, in Detroit, and moved to Niles in 1922 from Bridgman. She was a member of the Michigan City Baptist church.
    Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Milton, Updike, her husband, Paul, a daughter, Mrs. Fred Noecker, all of Niles; a son, George Watson, of St. Joseph, two grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph Cross, Harold Cross and Clifford Cross, all of Niles, and a sister, Mrs. Wilson Carter, of Bertrand.
    Friends may call at the Kiger funeral home Sunday and Monday to the time of the funeral, 2 p.m. Monday.  Services will be conducted at the funeral home by the Rev. Clarence Graham, and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Clark, Carl H.

Carl H. Clark, 63,

    Carl H. Clark, 63, of rural route six, died at 9:a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph hospital, South Bend, after an illness of four months.
    He was born April 4, 1887, in St. Joseph county, Ind., and moved to Niles from South Bend in 1920.  In 1905 he married Elnora Mandler in South Bend.  Clark was employed by the Niles Cabinet company as an inspector.
    Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Francis Fresner, of Baroda; four sons, Edgar, Charles, Richard and Robert, all of Niles, three brothers, Emil, of Niles, and Nelson and Bert, of South Bend; a sister, Mrs. Kurt Holler, of South Bend, and 13 grandchildren.
    Friends may call tonight at the Hickey funeral home in South Bend. Funeral Services wil be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph church, South Bend, and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery here.

Pownall, Gertrude

    Mrs. Gertrude Pownall, 43, of 1274 South Fourteenth Street, died at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in the Berrien county hospital, Berrien Center, after an illness of 12 hours.
    Beorn Nov. 6, 1906, in Burkett, Ind., Mrs. Pownall moved to Niles 40 years ago. She married Garrett Pownall, who survives and was a member of the South Niles Community church.
    Other survivors are her father Sherley Thomas, and two brothers John and Floyd Thomas, both of Niles.
    Friends may call at the Kiger funeral home, where the Rev. Charles Jones will conduct funeral services at 2 pm. Friday. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Williams, Phyllis Ann

Phyllis Williams, 6
Jan. 10, 1944-Aug. 22, 1950


    Phyllis Ann Williams died this morning at University hospital, Ann Arbor. She had been a patient there since Aug. 11, with cancer of the brain.  She was born Jan. 10, 1944, in Niles.
    She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Filbert Williams, 1342 Silverbrook avenue, who survive, as do her grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Williams and Mrs. Hattie Westerfield, of Niles; her brothers and sisters, David and Charles and Donna May and Norma Ruth Williams; a foster brother, Harold Williams, and two half-brothers, Milford and Lavern Williams.
    Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home starting tomorrow. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Harry Barnett at the Pentacostal church 1220 North Eleventh street.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

DAUGHTER IS STILL-BORN

    Gennela Stoops, still-born daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stoops, 1510 Clarendon avenue, was born at 10:31 a.m. Sunday at Pawating hospital.
    Surviving are the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Stoops and Mr. and Mrs. Lester Kuhl, all of Niles.
    Services were conducted at 2 p.m. today by the Rev. M.D. Elston, of the Church of God, and Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.
