TWO DEATHS DEATHS TODAY AT HOSPITAL
Chester Wertz and Andrew J. Wood Were Victims of Pneumonia

    Two deaths occurred this morning at the Red Cross hospital when Chester Wertz, aged 21 years, died about 4 o'clock, and Andrew J. Woods[sic], died about 5 o'clock. The death of the former was due to pneumonia, developing from influenza, and the latter a victim of influenza. Both  men resided in apartments at 102 Lincoln avenue.

    Andrew J. Wood

    Andrew J. Wood was 37 years of age.  He had recently come to Niles from Benton Harbor, although his boyhood was spent on a farm near Niles.  He was a son of the late James Wood.  About two weeks ago he entered the employ of W. L. Babbitt but a week later was compelled to give up his work on account of illness in his family. He is survived by his wife and four little children, all of whom are sick with influenza and patients at the Red Cross hospital since Sunday.
    The funeral announcement will be made later.

ANDREW WOOD DIED THIS MORNING

    This morning at 4 o'clock, Andrew Wood died at the Presbyterian church hospital, having suffered with influenza and pneumonia for the past few days.  Mrs. Wood and four children are seriously ill with disease and are being cared for at the hospital.
    In the year 1881 Mr. Wood was born in Michigan City.  He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.M.  Wood, who were old residents of this city.
    He is survived by his wife and four children.

    The funeral services for A.J. Wood who passed away at the Presbytreian[sic] hospital October 31, will be held from Price's chapel tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Dr. E.G. Lewis officiating.  Interment will take place at Silver Brook cemetery.

MRS. DELBERT KLINE DIED THIS MORNING

    Mrs. Delbert Kline passed away at the Niles sanitarium this morning at 9:30 o'clock. Her death was caused by influenza followed by pneumonia.  Mrs. Kline was formerly Mae Virginia Kleinhans[sic], daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kleinhans[sic], 1303 Maple street.  The deceased was born April 20, 1894 in Chicago. She moved with her parents to Niles and for several years was employed at the French paper mills. Two years ago she was married to Delbert Kline of this city and for some time after her marriage she was was bookkeeper at the Hildebidle's plumbing shop.  She is survived by a husband and one little daughter, four days old, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kleinhans.
    Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
    Her passing is a shock to her many friends and to the stricken husband and parents much sympathy is expressed.

UNTIMELY DEATH OF MRS. MAY KLINE
Sad Circumstances Surround Death of Well Known Young Woman.

    The untimely death of Mrs. May Kline, wife of Delbert Cameron Kline, which occurred this morning brought sadness to the large circle of friends of the young woman. After an illness with influenza, which developed into pleural pneumonia, and then giving premature birth to a daughter on last Friday, Mrs. Kline succumbed to these complications at 10 o'clock this morning at the Niles sanitarium.
    Mrs. Kline was 24 years of age. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kleinhaus, 1303 Maple street, who are indeed bereft in the death of their only child.  Her marriage to Mr. Kline occurred four years ago.  Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by her infant daughter.  
    The funeral arrangements have not been made.
    Mrs. Kline was well known in this city where she was resided for a number of years and was popular with a large circle of friends who mourn her death.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. D.C. KLINE
Body is Laid to Rest Wednesday afternoon at Silver Brook Cemetery


    Funeral services for Mrs.Delbert C. Kline, nee Mae Virginia Klinehaus[sic], and wife of Delbert C. Kline, who died at the Niles sanitarium on Monday, Nov. 18, after giving birth to a baby girl whose name shall be Shirley Blanche Kline, were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kleinhaus, 1303 Maple street.
    The funeral service of the Christian Science church at the residence and grave were read by Mrs. H.O. Parker, assisted by Mrs. Charles Kitterer, Mrs. Kline having been a member of the Christian Science church.
    Among those from out of the city who attended the services were Mrs. Albert Seeglitz and Mrs. William J. Kleinhaus of Chicago, Mrs. Kline's aunts, and Mrs. E.F. Wollin of Chicago, who will be the child's godmother.

    SERVICES HELD FOR MRS. DELBERT KLINE YESTERDAY


    Funeral services for Mrs. Delbert C. Kline, beloved wife of D.C. Kline and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Kleinhaus, were held yesterday afternoon from the home of her parents, 1303 Maple street.  The services at the residence and at the grave were conducted by Mrs. H.O. Parker, assisted by Mrs. Charles Kitterer.
    The Christian Science service was interpreted by Mrs. O. Colclasser for the benefit of the deaf people who attended.
    Mrs. Kline passsed away at the Niles Sanitarium Nov. 18, after the birth of a baby girl, Shirley Blanche.
    Mrs. Albert Seights and Mrs. Wm. Kleinhaus were in the city to attend the funeral.

DEATH TOLL DUE TO INFLUENZA

    Today's death toll is the largest to be recorded in this city in years.  Of the five to succumb, four were stricken with the Spanish influenza. . .
W.A. WHITE
    Mr. White was a resident of East Lake street, and suffered with intestinal paralysis.  He was taken to Epworth hospital Saturday night for an operation, but his condition would not permit of this ordeal, and he died yesterday morning.  He is survived by his wife and a sister, the latter, Mrs. J.J.A. Parker, who resides at Sylvania, Ohio. Deceased was 67 years of age.  Funeral will occur from the late residence at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon with burial at Silver Brook cemetery.

DEATH ON SUNDAY OF W. A. WHITE
Well Known Farmer Was Taken to Epworth Hospital For Operation

    William Alfred White, a well known and highly respected farmer residing two miles north and east of Barren lake, died at Epworth hospital at 6 o'clock last evening from intestional paralysis.  Mr. White was taken to the hospital Saturday night for an operation, arriving there about midnight, but his condition was so serious that an operation was not resorted to.
    Mr. White was about 68 years of age.  He is survived by a widow who was formerly Mrs. Nellie Doane of South Bend, and by one sister, Mrs. J. J. A. Parker of Slyvanus, O., who, with her husband, is at the brother's home.
    The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock from the house.  Rev. E.G. Lewis will officiate.  Interment will occur at Silver Brook cemetery.

ROY HAND IS DEAD
Former Niles Boy Succumbs to Pneumonia in Hospital at Dayton, O.
Was Employed by Government

    Roy Hand, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hand, of 1305 Regent street, died of pneumonia in St. Elizabeth's hospital at Dayton, O., yesterday, aged 27 years.
    Mr. Hand, who was employed as an electrician in a government plant at Dayton, was born in this county June 22, 1891. He was graduated from Berrien Springs high school in 1909 and subsequently served as a conductor on the interurban line of the Southern Michigan Railway Co.  Prior to leaving here in 1912, he worked for William Bowerman, the electrician.
    On Dec. 24, 1912, Mr. Hand was married to Miss Lillian Burns of McDonald, Pa., who survives him, as do his three children --Joe, Robert and Winifred--his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hand, and his sister, Mrs. Carl Dick, and his brother, Meryl Hand, of this city.  His parents were with him when the end came, they having been summoned to Dayton several days ago.
    The body will arrive tomorrow and will be taken to the home of the parents of the deceased. The young man was highly esteemed by all who knew him and his untimely taking off is to be greatly deplored.

RAY HAND DIES IN DAYTON, OHIO

    The death of Roy Hand, which occurred yesterday afternoon at 2:40 o'clock in St. Elizabeth's hosptial, at Dayton, Ohio, after a brief illness of pneumonia, comes as a shock to his many friends in this city.
    Deceased was born on the Hand farm, eight miles north of Niles, June 12, 1891, and moved to this city with his parents, in 1911.  He was graduated from the Berrien Springs high school with the class of 1909.
    Six years ago he went to Pittsburgh, Pa., later moving to Dayton, Ohio, where he was employed in an aeroplane factory.
    For a number of years Mr. Hand was conductor for the Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan railway, and at one time was employed as electrician for Wm. Bowerman in this city.
    Besides his wife he is survived by three children, Jo[sic], Robert and Winifred; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hand, one sister, Mrs. Carl Dick, and one brother, Merle Hand, all of this city.
    The body will be brought to this city tomorrow afternoon for burial and announcement of the funeral will  be made later.
    Mr. Hand was very popular with a host of friends in this city and Dayton, Ohio.
His grief stricken relatives have the sympathy of their friends in their bereavement.

HERMAN LUTH CLAIMED BY DEATH
Attack of Influenza Hastens Death of Well Known Citizen

    Hermann Luth, who has been in ill health from Bright's disease for about two years, died this morning about 4 o'clock at his home at the corner of Hickory and Ninth streets, aged 44 years.  The immediate cause of death was heart disease resulting from an attack of influenza. He became ill last Wednesday while at his work at the Kawneer plant.
    Mr. Luth had resided in Niles about 12 years, the family coming to Niles from Hancock, Mich.  He is survived by his wife, who is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Burt of this city, and by seven children who are Bert and Collins, who are in the U.S.navy, the former stationed the Great Lakes Training station, and the latter at present in Washington; Gladys, Verna, Marion, Hari and Mary Rose. He is also survived by three brothers and six sisters.  The son Bert, and a brother and sister are expected this evening to attend the funeral services.
    The services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be private on account of illness of several members of the household.  Rev. E.G. Lewis will officiate.  Interment will occur at Silver Brook cemetery.
    The deceased was well known and a highly respected citizen and many mourn his death.

H.C. LUTH PASSED AWAY THIS MORNING

    Herman C. Luth, 44 years old, 709 Hickory street, died early this morning after an illness of two years with complication of diseases.
    He is survived by his wife and seven children, Burt and Collins, who are in the navy; Gladys, Verne, Marion, Harl and Ray Rose, residing at home.
    Mr. Luth was born June 14, 1874 in Germany.
    Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the house, Dr. E.G. Lewis to officiate.  Burial will take place at Silver Brook cemetery.

MISS FOWLER DEAD IN CHICAGO
Body Will Be Brought to Niles Tomorrow for Burial

    Miss Anita Fowler, a former well known and prominent Niles resident, died at her home in Chicago after about two years' of illness.
    The body will be brought to Niles via the Michigan Central at 12:59 p.m. and removed to Price's chapel where the funeral services will be held. Burial will occur in Silver Brook cemetery.
    Miss Fowler was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Fowler, both now deceased. She was born in New York but came to Niles when a child and grew to young womanhood here. She was endowed with much talent as an actress and for a number of years or until stricken with illness, she successfully appeared in the play, "Old Homestead," and later in "Within the Law."
    Miss Fowler is survived by two sisters, Miss Mabel and Kate Fowler, both of Chicago, who wil accompany the body to Niles tomorrow as will also Mrs. Benjamin Schneewind.
    Mrs. Jane McDonald of this city and the mother of the deceased were sisters.
    Mrs. Belle Babcock of this city and Mrs. Stephen Arney of Buchanan are cousins of the deceased.

FORMER NILES WOMAN DEAD

    Miss Anita Fowler, formerly of this city, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Fowler, passed away at her home in Chicago yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock. Miss Fowler has been ailing for several years and about three weeks ago was taken very seriously ill with tubercular trouble.
    She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to Niles when but a small child.  She resided here until 16 years ago, when she went to Chicago to live. After that she entered in a stage career and took leading roles in many of the most popular plays.
    Miss Fowler is survived by two sisters, Mabel and Kathryn, both of Chicago.
    The body will be brought here tomorrow at 1 o'clock and taken to Price's chapel. Funeral services will take place at 1:30 o'clock.  Burial at Silver Brook cemetery.

    At H.E. Price's chapel Sunday afternoon funeral services were held for Miss Anita Fowler, who passed away Saturday at her home in Chicago. The Christian Science service was used, Mrs. H.O. Parker, reader, having charge.  A wreath of lovely flowers were testimonials of love and friendship from many. Misses Kate and Mable Fowler, sisters of the deceased, accompanied the body to Niles.  Burial took place in Silver Brook cemetery.

BENIWILL SWARTZ AGED 78, DEAD
Was Civil War Veteran and Well Known Resident of Niles for 68 Years

    Beniwill Swartz, aged 78 years, a respected and well known resident of Niles for 68 years, died last night at 7:35 o'clcok at his home 813 Clay street, after about a week's illness with pneumonia.
    Mr. Swartz was born in Parisburg, Pa., in 1840, and had reached the age of 78 years, 5 months and 7 days, when his death occurred.  When he was a boy of 10 years, he came to Niles with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Swartz, and had since resided here.
    Mr. Swartz was a veteran of the Civil war, having served in Co., E, 12th infantry, from Feb. 23, 1865, until he was mustered out at Campden, Ark., Feb. 14 1866, when he returned to Niles.
    The deceased had never married.  He is survived by five brothers and four sisters who are: Joseph, Milton and Wilson Swartz, Mrs. William Webber, Mrs. Lydia Loane, Mrs. Henry Weiser, all of Niles; Frank and Jacob Swartz of South Bend, and Mrs. Ella Clark of Chicago.
    The funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2:30 o'clock from the house.  Rev. Camfield will officiate.

BENNIAL SWARTZ DIED LAST NIGHT

    Bennial Swartz, one of the oldest residents of West Niles, died at his home in Clay street last evening after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia.
    Mr. Swartz was 78 years of age and a veteran of the civil war.  Four sisters and five brothers survive.
    Funeral will be held from the home tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.  Rev. W.H. Camfield, of the Evangelical church will officiate.  Burial will take place at Silver Brook cemetery.
