Mrs. Sylvia H. Johnson, 70, of 581 Union street, died at 2:45 p.m.  Tuesday at Pawating Hospital after a three-week illness.  Born March 28, 1884 at Almena, Mich., she came here from Benton Harbor in 1929.

She was a member of the Niles Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Dorcas Society of the church.

Survivors are a son, Charles Allen, Kalamazoo; three daughters, Mrs. Ella Peters, Pomona, Calif.; Mrs. Howard Miller and Mrs. Huston Miller, both of Niles; 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Evie Riley, Marcellus, and Mrs. Alma Peierson, St. Cloud, Fla.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home where Elder Lawrence Caviness of the Seventh-day adventist[sic] Church will conduct services at 2 p.m. Friday.  Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Mapes, Effie

Mrs. Effie Mapes, 80, of 1343 Oak street, died at 9:30 a.m. today in Pawating Hospital where she had been a patient since Dec. 17. The body was taken to the Pifer Funeral HOme where funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Pifer Funeral Home here for Mrs. Effie Mapes, 81, of 1114 Oak street, who died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pawating Hospital following an extended illness. The Rev. Ray McCoy, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Mapes was born October 22, 1873, in Oak Grove, Mich., and came to Niles 31 years ago from Tustin, Mich.

Surviving are: six children, Mrs. Glenn West, Mrs. Malburne Hall, Mrs. Etta Baird, Mrs. Jack Stanner and Delbert Mapes, all of Niles, and Mrs. Elmer Green, of Grand Rapids; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Harry Johnson, of Tustin, and a brother, Deloss Hillaker, of Everett, Mich.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Saturday.

Retired Niles Teacher Dies

 

Mrs. Ethel Harriet Young, 67, of 1450 Broadway, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Pawating Hospital, where she had been a patient since June 11. She had been ill six months.

Mrs. Young, a retired teacher with the Niles Public Scools[sic], was born March 5, 1896, in Howard Township, Cass County. She was a lifetime resident of the area. She taught at the Ferry St. school from 1919 to 1921. From 1921 to 1945 she taught in various Howard Township schools. In 1945 she returned to the city schools, where she taught at the Lacey St., Westside and Oak Manor Schools. She retired in 1956.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle E.; a daughter, Mrs. Darwin Smith, Parma; a son, Jerome, Niles; a sister, Mrs. Chester S. Chaus, Watervliet; a brother, Palmer Pease, Mishawaka; and 10 grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in her church. The Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the Kiger Funeral Home.

 

Anderson, Rose

Services for Rose E. Anderson, 86, 1682 Anderson Road in Cassopolis, are 1 p.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles by the Rev. Mark Filonczuk of Union Protestant church in Dailey.

Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Anderson died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday at Beneva Park Nursing Home in Sarasota, Fla., following an extended illness.

She was a member of Union Protestant Church and the Ladies Aid of the church.  She was a retired employee of Simplicity  Pattern Co. and a farmer.

She was born Dec. 14, 1903,  in Howard Township and was a Cassopolis resident her entire life.

She was married to Milo Anderson, who preceded her in death in 1940.

Survivors include, sister, Margaret Moore of Sturgis; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A son, Richard L. Anderson preceded her in death Dec. 17, 1984.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home.

 

Atkinson, James L.

Funeral services for a former Buchanan resident, James Leroy Atkinson, 91, of 2683 Lake Pine Drive, St. Joseph, are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hoven Funeral Home of Buchanan by the Rev. Walt Rothfuss of Oronoko United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Atkinson died at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday in his home of natural causes.

Atkinson was born Nov. 25, 1898 in Chicago, Ill., and had moved to St. Joseph in 1987, coming from Buchanan. He retired in 1964 from Bendix Corporation of South Bend, Ind., where he worked in brake assembly.

In Chicago, he married Florence Marie Greip, who preceded him in death in 1968.

Survivors include a son, Dennis Soucek of St. Joseph; a daughter, Barbara Brown of Chicago; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home. 2618 W. John Beers Road, Stevensville.

 

Bair, Helen M. (Witherell)

Funeral services were held this afternoon in the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home for Mrs. Helen M. Bair, 65, of 1958 Lewis Drive, who died Saturday morning in Pawating Hospital after an illness of one month.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin T. Bair, and two daughters: Mrs. Carl Schadler, and Mrs. Harley Davis, both of Niles. Ten grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Bair was born Nov. 24, 1902, in Beloit, Wis. She came here in 1923 from Michigan City. She married Edwin T. Bair in Goshen, Ind., Oct. 8, 1938.       Mrs. Bair was the bookkeeper at the Home Lumber and Supply Co. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and Noble Grand Niles Rebekah Lodge No. 351. Mrs. Bair was also past president and past department chaplain of the American Legion Auxiliary 26 in Niles. She was also past chapeau of 8 et 40, Berrien-Cass Salon.

Burial was in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

 

 

Brickel, Rebecca (Fisher)

Mrs. Rebecca Brickle, 73, of 47 S. 4th St., died Monday at 12:15 p.m., in Pawating Hospital, after a 9 month illness.

Born Jan. 31, 1894, in South Bend, Mrs. Brickle moved to Niles from there in 1910. Her Husband, Marion Brickle, died Jan. 5, 1956.

She was a member of the St. John's United Church of Christ, the Eastern Star and the White Shrine of Jerusalem.

Her survivors include a brother, Fred Fisher of Niles; and two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Hamilton of Niles; and Mrs. Ruth Peters of Benton Harbor.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m., in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. Arlan E. Schlundt officiating.

Burial will follow in the Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m., today.

The name of Mrs. Rebecca F. Brickel, 47, who died Monday in Pawating Hospital, was incorrect Tuesday.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m., in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. Arlan Schlundt officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
