Houghteling, Barbara L.

Barbara L. Houghteling
1929-2007

Barbara L. Houghteling, 77, of Niles passed away on Friday, March 9, 2007, in Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, following a brief illness.

On October 10, 1945, she married Nathan Houghteling at a ceremony in St. Joseph.

She worked for many years at local jewelry stores and Montgomery Ward before her retirement. Barbara was a devoted caregiver for her husband, parents and mother-in-law Millie Houghteling. Her hobbies included shopping, traveling and spending time on weekends for many years in Baldwin, Michigan.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son Rex Allen Houghteling.

She is survived by a son John (Marie) Houghteling of South Bend, two sisters; Patricia Horner and Marjorie Reed both of Niles, a niece Marjorie Bass of Niles, two great-nieces; Jennifer (Scott) Holley of Niles and Amanda Rohl of Niles and a great-great-nephew Scott Allen Eugene Holley of Niles.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in Silverbrook Cemetery at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Smith officiating. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions can be made in Barbara's memory to the American Kidney Foundation or a charity of one's choice.

Houghtaling, Myrtle Iona

Myrtle Iona Houghtaling
February 4, 1910-May 25, 1996

Myrtle Iona Houghtaling, 86, of 707 Platt St., died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 1996, in her home of natural causes. Mrs. Houghtaling was employed in the nursing profession. She was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Cassopolis. On April 15, 1944, in Niles, she married Darrell D. Houghtaling. He survives with a daughter, Patricia Avery Houghtaling of Niles; and a sister, Iva Burks-Duis of Buchanan. She was a member of Church of God Full Gospel and a Girl Scout leader from 1951 to 1958.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.

Houghtaling, Darrell Dane

Darrell Dane Houghtaling
October 29, 1917-January 24, 2003

Darrell Dane Houghtaling, 85, of 707 Platt Street, Niles, Mich., departed this world on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003,to be with his beloved Lord Jesus Christ.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1917, in Jackson, Mich., to the union of George W. Houghtaling and Theo Lindsey Houghtaling, who both preceded him in death. He had lived in the Niles/Buchanan area for the past 60 years, coming from Battle Creek, Mich. He married Myrtle Ione Houghtaling on April 15, 1944, in Niles. She also preceded him in death in 1996.

He leaves his dearly beloved daughter, Patricia Avery Houghtaling-McGee at home in Niles; his sister, Darlene Whitcomb of Seal Beach, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats.

Darrell was active in Boy Scouts for 19 years in Battle Creek, Mich., with the distinction of being the troops first Eagle Scout. He was also the first to sign up and attend the 1937 Boy Scout Jamboree held in Washington, D.C. He continued on to become a Sea Scout and was later a scoutmaster for Troop 75 in Niles. He also taught Sunday School in Niles for 12 years. He retired in 1980 from Bower Pattern Works as a pattern-maker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, in the Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, Mich., with Pastor Morton Hempel officiating. Friends and family may call today, Jan. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God Full Gospel or to Fulkerson Park Baptist Church.

Horn, Louise Anna

Mrs. Louise Anna Horn, 83, former long-time resident of 100 Forest Ave., Niles, Mich., died following a brief illness at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 24, 1999, at Thunderbird Foster Care, Niles.

Mrs. Horn was born on March 6, 1916, at Detroit, Mich., to George and Lillian (Haas) Mong, and had lived in Niles since 1932. She graduated from Niles High School.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Niles, where she had been active in many areas including teaching Sunday School. She had also volunteered with the Girl Scouts when her daughters were involved. She enjoyed collecting dolls, doing hand needlework, completing crossword puzzles and playing solitaire.

On Oct. 11, 1941, in Niles, she was married to Robert Deloise Horn, who preceded her in death on February 4, 1994.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Diaz of Bloomingdale, Ill., and Gloria Keef of Palm City, Fla.; five grandchildren, Heidi and Heather Diaz, Allison Dubuque, and Robert and Maili Keef; and by her sister, Marian Wagner of Niles.

Funeral services for Louise Horn will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. Nolan R. Williams of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Committal services will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hover-Nieb, Shirley

 

Shirley Hover-Nieb, 72, of St. Joseph, Mich., died on Wednesday, Feb. 26,  2003, in her residence.

A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, March 1, in the Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Burial took place at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles, Mich.

Memorial contributions may be made to Safe Shelter Inc. of Benton Harbor, Mich., or to Hospice At Home of Stevensville, Mich.

Shirley was born on March 19, 1930, in Niles, to Frank and Helen (Foster) Hover. She was a graduate of Niles High School in 1948. Shirley retired as a manager in customer service at the Whirlpool Corporation in 1990 after 33 years of service. She loved to learn new things and continually strived to educate herself whenever possible. She loved traveling, especially with her elder hostel traveling companions. Shirley was also an excellent cook; her family and friends looked forward to her dinner invitations. She was a wonderful mother and friend, and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Nieb of Benton Harbor, and Brenda's fiancée, Jonathan Dube; her mother, Helen Morley of Niles; a brother, Jerry Hover, and a sister, Bonnie (Ed) Behm, both of Niles. She was preceded in death by her father, Frank Hover, and by a brother, Jack.

Horn, Robert Deloise

Robert Deloise Horn

Robert Deloise Horn, 79, of 100 Forest St., died at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 1994, in his home after an illness. Mr. Horn retired from French Paper Co. He was born Nov. 26, 1914, in St. Joseph County, Ind. On Oct. 11, 1941, in Niles, he married Louise A. Mong.  She survives, with two daughters, Sandra Diaz of Bloomingdale, Ill., and Gloria Keef of Parker, Colo.; and five grandchildren.  Mr. Horn was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Moose Lodge 978.  He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Halbritter Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Niles Community Library.
