Hubbard, S. Eugene

S. Eugene Hubbard
April 5, 1922-April 19, 2007

Mr. S. Eugene Hubbard, 85, of Philip Road, Niles, Michigan, died following an extended illness at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2007, in Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles.

He was born on April 5, 1922, in Elberton, Georgia, to S. Eugene and Janie (Norman) Hubbard. He attended school in Georgia and earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in music from the University of Georgia. He taught music in Georgia high schools for several years.

He had a lifelong interest in astronomy, which led him to continue his education at the University of Chicago. He used the science and mathematics learned for astronomy to pursue a position with an architectural firm. In 1956 he was hired by the Kawneer Company, Niles, advancing to the position of director of research and development.

He continued his interest in music, playing the piano for The Straw Hats jazz combo, and, with his wife, participating with the Guys & Dolls ballroom dancing club. He also continued his interest in astronomy, marketing kits and blueprints to build tabletop scale models of the five-meter telescope at Palomar Observatory.

On August 24, 1947, in Springfield, Illinois, he married the former Cecilia Kloga, who survives. Also surviving are their sons, Eugene Norman Hubbard, Ph.D., of San Diego, California, and Michael A. Hubbard, Ph.D. (Rita, Ph.D.), Pittsford, New York; and granddaughters, Anna Hubbard and Sarah Hubbard.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Hubbard.

The funeral service for Mr. S. Eugene Hubbard will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Rev. Kevin J. McLemore of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Coloma, Michigan, officiating. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Hubbard may be made to the Fernwood Botanic Garden and Nature Center.

Howe, Mary Rose

Mary Rose Howe  Mrs. Howe succumbs to Pneumonia  Passed away at her house in Chicago at early hour this morning.With but a few hours after the death of her life long friend, Mrs. W. W. Fowler at her home in Chicago, Mrs. C.  E. Howe passed away in the same city. They had been friends in this city for many years and kept up the friendship after the families had removed to Chicago. Mrs. Howe being a very frequent visitor at the home of Mrs. Fowler during her long and painful illness.Only a week ago yesterday, Mrs. Howe was stricken with pneumonia, but her condition was serious from the first, both lungs being affected. A trained nurse was summoned and all was done that possibly could be, but it was on no avail. She passed away at 2 o’clock this morning at her home, 1129 Hyde Park Blvd., surrounded by her four children, Guy, Carl, Harriet and charlotte, the latter, Mrs. C. B. Winslow jr., all of whom reside in Chicago, and also her sister, miss Harriet Townsend.Mrs. How was born about 70 years ago on a farm near Berrien Springs and was he daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Benjamin Townsend, early settlers of this county. Mrs. Howe had a wide acquaintances throughout the county having resided at Berrien Springs, Buchanan and Niles. Mrs. Howe attended St. Mary’s Academy, where it was located at Bertrand, and inhere young days was a prominent society belle of the county. She married Charles Eugene Howe, who held county office at Berrien Springs for many years and saw distinguished services in the Union Army rising t o a high rank in the 12 Michigan. Mr. Howe died in Chicago about five years ago and was buried in Silver Brook Cemetery where the remains of Mrs. Howe will be laid at rest Thursday afternoon.The funeral party will arrive her with the remains on the 1 o’clock train Thursday afternoon. Rev. R. H. F. Gairdner will accompany them and will conduct services at Trinity Church, at 1:30 o’clock, assisted by the rector, Rev. G. Huntington.‘The many friends of the family will receive the news of the sudden taking away of this devoted mother, with great. Regret. 

Howe, Clyde Wayne

Clyde Wayne Howe
June 19, 1928-Sept. 28, 1996

Clyde Wayne Howe, 68, of 530 Gumwood Road, Niles, Mich., died at 2:22 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 1996, at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, Mich.

He was a Korean War Army veteran, and an Indiana Auctioneer Association member. He retired after 18 years of service with Uniroyal, Mishawaka. He was also an active auctioneer in Shipshewana, Ind. and founded Howe Tree Service, which served Mishawaka Municipal Utility for over 25 years.

Mr. Howe was born June 19, 1928, in Paragould, Ark., and had lived here since 1949. He was married Jan. 2, 1953, in Niles, Mich. to Lovonne Juanita Ross, who died Dec. 16, 1978.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley and Marlin Howe, both of Niles; one daughter, Brenda Wiseman of Niles; four grandchildren, Joshua, Jason and Justin Kronewitter, all of Niles and Nathan Howe of Niles, Mich.

Also surviving are three brothers, Joseph and Harold Howe both of Niles and Auda Howe of Kokomo, Ind.; and three sisters, Ivell Flowers of Pangborth, Ark., Syble Ozier of Niles, Mich. and Ann Street of Judsonia, Ark., and a longtime companion Fran Jefferies of South Bend.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in First Missionary Church of Niles, Mich. Visitation will be from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Hoven Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Howe, Charles E.

Charles Eugene Howe
1836-Nov. 18, 1906

C.E. Howe Former resident of Niles passes away in Chicago. 

C.E. Howe a former well known Niles resident, passed away yesterday afternoon (Nov. 18, 1906) in his home in Chicago, after illness. He was about 70 years of age.

Mr. Howe was a resident of Berrien County for over half century and took and active part in its affairs holding a number of public offices. He was county clerk for many years. When the Civil War broke out he responded to his country’s call serving honorably until the close and attaining to the rank of Major.

He wedded Miss Mollie Townsand a member of one of the pioneer families of the county, who with two sons, Guy T. Howe of Chicago and Carl Howe, assistant general freight agent for the Michigan Central at Buffalo, and two daughters, Miss Harriet Howe and Mrs. C.B. Winslow Jr., both of Chicago, survive; eight grandchildren are also left. The family removed from Niles to Chicago about 12 years ago.

The remains will arrive here over the Michigan central at 1 o’clock tomorrow afternoon and will be conveyed directly to Silver Brook cemetery, where committal services will be conducted by Rev. C J. DeCoux, Rector of Trinity Episcopal church. Funeral services for the late Charles Eugene Howe were conducted at 9 o’clock yesterday morning at the home in Chicago, by Rev. R. H. F. Gairdner, rector of St. Marina’s church, Austin, formerly Trinity this city, after which the remains were brought to Niles accompanied by Mrs. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Howe, Carl Howe, Miss Harriet Howe, and Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Winslow Jr. The bearers were M.T. Cary, Arthur Winslow, Walter Crip, F.W. Dodds, Otto Oswald of Chicago, and W.E. Platt of this city.

The funeral party was met at the station here by a number of relatives and old friends, who accompanied them to SilverBrook Cemetery, where interment took place by the side of the daughter, Miss Zora Howe, whose death occurred about two years ago. The burial services were read by Rev. C. J. DeCoux, rector of Trinity Church. Many exquisite floral offerings were received; two pieces being especially beautiful, come by a number of South Water Street merchants of Chicago and the members of the Michigan Central office force at Buffalo, business associates of the two sons, Guy and Carl.

C.E. Howe, a former well known resident here, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Chicago, after a lingering illness. He was bout 68 years of age.

Mr. Howe was a resident of Berrien county for over half a century and took an active part in its affairs, holding a number of public offices. He was county Clerk for many years. When the civil war broke out he responded to his country’s call, enlisting as lieutenant in Co. I, 12th Michigan Infantry U.S. V., later promoted to Captain and assigned to Gen. Shaler’s staff as assistant adjutant general, serving honorably to the close of war and rising to the rank of Major.

He wedded Miss Mollie Townsend, a member of one of the pioneer families of the county, who with two sons, Guy T. Howe of Chicago and Carl Howe, assistant general freight agent for the Michigan Central at Buffalo, and two daughters, Miss Harriet Howe and Ms. C. B. Winslow Jr., both of Chicago, survive. Eight grandchildren are also left. The family removed from Niles to Chicago about 12 years ago.

Houghteling, Barbara L.

Barbara L. Houghteling
1929-2007

Barbara L. Houghteling, 77, of Niles passed away on Friday, March 9, 2007, in Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph, following a brief illness.

On October 10, 1945, she married Nathan Houghteling at a ceremony in St. Joseph.

She worked for many years at local jewelry stores and Montgomery Ward before her retirement. Barbara was a devoted caregiver for her husband, parents and mother-in-law Millie Houghteling. Her hobbies included shopping, traveling and spending time on weekends for many years in Baldwin, Michigan.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son Rex Allen Houghteling.

She is survived by a son John (Marie) Houghteling of South Bend, two sisters; Patricia Horner and Marjorie Reed both of Niles, a niece Marjorie Bass of Niles, two great-nieces; Jennifer (Scott) Holley of Niles and Amanda Rohl of Niles and a great-great-nephew Scott Allen Eugene Holley of Niles.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in Silverbrook Cemetery at 2 p.m. with Pastor Mike Smith officiating. There will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions can be made in Barbara's memory to the American Kidney Foundation or a charity of one's choice.

Houghtaling, Myrtle Iona

Myrtle Iona Houghtaling
February 4, 1910-May 25, 1996

Myrtle Iona Houghtaling, 86, of 707 Platt St., died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 1996, in her home of natural causes. Mrs. Houghtaling was employed in the nursing profession. She was born Feb. 4, 1910, in Cassopolis. On April 15, 1944, in Niles, she married Darrell D. Houghtaling. He survives with a daughter, Patricia Avery Houghtaling of Niles; and a sister, Iva Burks-Duis of Buchanan. She was a member of Church of God Full Gospel and a Girl Scout leader from 1951 to 1958.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.

Houghtaling, Darrell Dane

Darrell Dane Houghtaling
October 29, 1917-January 24, 2003

Darrell Dane Houghtaling, 85, of 707 Platt Street, Niles, Mich., departed this world on Friday, Jan. 24, 2003,to be with his beloved Lord Jesus Christ.

He was born on Oct. 29, 1917, in Jackson, Mich., to the union of George W. Houghtaling and Theo Lindsey Houghtaling, who both preceded him in death. He had lived in the Niles/Buchanan area for the past 60 years, coming from Battle Creek, Mich. He married Myrtle Ione Houghtaling on April 15, 1944, in Niles. She also preceded him in death in 1996.

He leaves his dearly beloved daughter, Patricia Avery Houghtaling-McGee at home in Niles; his sister, Darlene Whitcomb of Seal Beach, Calif.; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and his beloved cats.

Darrell was active in Boy Scouts for 19 years in Battle Creek, Mich., with the distinction of being the troops first Eagle Scout. He was also the first to sign up and attend the 1937 Boy Scout Jamboree held in Washington, D.C. He continued on to become a Sea Scout and was later a scoutmaster for Troop 75 in Niles. He also taught Sunday School in Niles for 12 years. He retired in 1980 from Bower Pattern Works as a pattern-maker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, in the Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, Mich., with Pastor Morton Hempel officiating. Friends and family may call today, Jan. 31, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God Full Gospel or to Fulkerson Park Baptist Church.
