ENGINEER FOR NYC DIES FRIDAY EVE

A cerebral hemorrhage resulted in death at 6:30 p.m. Friday to Henry w. Berg, 63, of 1223 East Main street, engineer for the New York Central Railway, in the state hospital, Kalamazoo. He had been ill two months.

Born in Whitehall, Mich., Feb. 9, 1881, Berg came to Niles from Michigan City 25 years ago. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the St. Joseph Valley lodge No. 4, F and AM, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers.

Surviving are two children, Russell Berg, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Tom Medders, Niles, two brothers, William Berg, Muskegon, and George Berg, Opportunity, Wash., and three sisters, Miss Cora Berg and Mrs. Maude Adamson, Muskegon, and Mrs. Nel McCurry, Detroit.

Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home after noon Sunday. Dr. Guy W. Simon will officiate at services Tuesday at 2 p.m.  in the First Presbyterian church. Members of the Masonic lodge will have charge of committal services in Silverbrook.

BERG RITES

Funeral services for Henry W. Berg, 63, of 1223 East Main street, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian church by Dr. Guy W. Simon. Prior to the services the body will lie in state in the church from 1 to 2. The Masonic lodge, of which he was a member, will officate[sic] at committal services in Silverbrook cemetery.  Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home tonight. Pallbearers will be Glen Heslett, Myron Crawford, Merle Sheeler, A.D. McCormick and Howard and Edward Klute.

Russell Blanchard of Cass County Dies Thursday Eve

Russell Blanchard, 55, of Milton township, died Thursday night at 10 in the Cass county hospital after two weeks illness with heart trouble.

He was born in Milton township, July 25, 1889, a son of Edward and Sarah Bickle Blanchard who preceeded him in death.

Surviving are two brothers, George and Burton Blanchard, and a sister, Mrs. May Batzel, all of Route 2.

Friends may call at the Rutherford funeral home where services will be conducted Saturday at 3:30 p.m. by Dr. Guy W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas Britton, Former Nilesite, Dies in Dowagiac

. . .[Illegible] . .. of Dowagiac, until eight years ago a resident of  Niles, died Tuesday night at 11:30 in Lee Memorial hospital following a stroke.

Surviving is the husband and a brother, Herman Hossfeld, Dowagiac, also formerly  from Niles.

Services will be conducted Friday at 3 in the McLaughlin funeral home, Dowagiac. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mr. Britton was a former railroad employe here and conducted  a coal and ice business for several years prior to moving to Dowagiac.

MARY E. BURT, 90, TAKEN BY DEATH

Mrs. Mary Ellen Burt, 90, of 119 Forrest avenue, grandmother of City Clerk Burt Luth, died at 7 Tuesday night in the Quick Convalescent home after several years of illness.

Born in Susquehanna county Pennsylvania, July 25, 1854, Mrs. Burt came to Niles from Fond du Lac, Wis., in 1907.  Her husband, Pierre Burt, whom she married in Manitowoc, Wis., died in 1927.

Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Laura Luth, Niles; Mrs. J. Hall, Manitowoc, Wis.; Mrs. Edna Atherton, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Bertha Searle, Spokane, Wash.; and Mrs. Martha Hayward, Fond du Lac, Wis.; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home after noon Thursday.  Private services will be conducted there Saturday afternoon at 2 by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster.  Burial will be in the mausoleum in Silverbrook cemetery.

Cady, James Edward

Cady, Ex-Teacher, Stricken; Burial Here Thursday

Ed Cady, 73, who formerly lived in the Niles vicinity, died Monday night in his home in Ludington.

Cady was born in 1871 north of Niles. He taught in the Hatfield and National schools.

Surviving are the widow, the former Grace Ullrey; a daughter, Mrs. Zane Fairchild in Nebraska; three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Blodgett, Ludington.

Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery Thursday afternoon at 5.

Hold Rites Friday for George Calder

Funeral services for George Calder, 45, of 403 West Main street, will be conducted by Dr. Guy W. Simon in the Pifer funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday. The Elks lodge, of which Calder was a member, will have charge of committal services in Silverbrook.

Calder died Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. In Pawating hospital following a stroke.

He was born in Washburn, Wis., July 20, 1899, and came to Niles from Milwaukee 24 years ago.  He was employed by the railway.

Survivors are the mother, Mrs. Eva Calder, South Milwaukee,and four brothers, Roy Calder, South Milwaukee; Marvin and Donald Calder, Detroit and Pfc. Lyman Calder, Camp Rouge Park, Detroit.

CALDER SERVICES

Funeral services for George Calder, 45, of 403 West Main street, who died Tuesday were conducted in the Pifer funeral home this afternoon by Dr. Guy W. Simon.  The Elks lodge, of which Calder was a member, furnished pallbearers and had charge of committal services.

Hold Rites Tuesday for Clark Infant

Jo Ellen Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Clark, 1420 East Main street, was still born in Pawating hospital at 3 a.m. Today.

Survivors include two sisters, Juanita Mae and Mary Etta Clark, all of Niles.

Prayer services will be conducted in the Pifer funeral home Tuesday at 10 a.m. by Dr. Guy Simons, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
