Hold Rail Worker in Man's Death

Niles police today held G.W. Foster, 56-year-old Negro railroad worker pending investigation of the death of Oscar Copley, 68, also colored.

Copley, an employe of the Clark Equipment Co., of Buchanan, died last night at Pawating hospital.  An autopsy conducted today by Coroner William Pifer showed death caused by a cerebral hemmorage[sic], caused by a blow over the left ear.

Plan Further Probe

It was understood that he information procured by police may be turned over to a local justice of peace, who will be authorized to make further investigation.

Foster was held for questioning by authorities because he was allegedly involved in a fight with Copley Sunday night at the River View Inn, 22 Front street.

Acting on information supplied by patrons of the tavern, Foster was arrested Tuesday by police.  Foster was reported to have “squabbled” with Copley in the basement of the tavern.

Copley's two daughters, who were with him at the tavern, related to authorities that their father had gone to the rest room of the tavern and failed to return.  The husband of Copley's elder daughter subsequently went in search of his father-in-law.

Police Chief L.O. Bates said Copley was found with his hand cut and bleeding. However, no report was made to police until the following morning.

Native of Cass County

Copley was born in Calvin township, Cass county, on Jan. 3, 1876, and come to Niles 35 years ago.

He is survived by three sons, Delbert Harris; Orman Copley, and Kenneth Copley, all of Niles; four daughters, Mrs. Valma Flint, Mrs. Hortense Moffett, Mrs. Alene Stewart and Mrs. Joyce Hoover, Niles; and four brothers, Charles, Ira and Fred Copley, Calvin township, and Richard Copley, Cassopolis.

The funeral will be conducted from the Pifer funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday with Rev. Emory Davis officiating. Burial will be made in Silverbrook cemetery.

Pearl Dickeson, 53, Dies in Pawating After Long Illness

Mrs. Pearl Dickeson, 53, of 641 North Seventh street, died Sunday morning at 6:30 in Pawating hospital after several years of illness.

Forty years ago Mrs. Dickeson moved to Niles from Disko, Ind., where she was born Sept. 22, 1890. She was married in 1907 to John Dickeson in St. Joseph.

She was a member of the Daughters of America, the St. John's Evangelical church, and of the Women's Guild of the church.

Funeral Wednesday

Surviving are the husband; her father, William Weidman; nine children, Mrs. Harold Craig, Indianapolis; Mrs. Helen Rogers, Mrs. Benjamin Hardy, Maxine Dickeson, Peggy Dickeson, John Dickeson, Jr., Walter Dickeson, Ernest Dickeson and Carl Dickeson, all of Niles; seven grandchildren; a brother, Harold Weidman, Niles; and two sisters, Mrs. Noble Meyers and Mrs. Mrs. Ruth Meldrim, Niles.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home until noon Wednesday. The Rev. Theo Eisen will officiate at the services Wednesday at 2 in the St. John's Evangelical church.  Burial will be in Silverbrook.

DICKESON RITES

Mrs. Pearl Dickeson, 53, of 641 North Seventh street, was buried today in Silverbrook following services in the St. John's Evangelical church. She died Sunday.  Survivors are the husband, her father, nine children; seven grandchildren and a step grandchild, a brother and two sisters.  Pallbearers were Carl Schmidt, Herman Schrumpf, George Eisele, Charles Shaber, Percy Bosler and Rudolph Meyer.

MRS. NORA ECKLER, 71, DIES TODAY

A cerebral hemorrhage resulted in death at 7:30 a.m. today to Mrs. Nora Eckler, 71, of 1004 Birch street, in a hospital in Allegan. She had been in poor health for several months, but seriously ill only four days.

Mrs. Eckler had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Bernice Chestine, Allegan, for the past five weeks.

Born in Keeler, Mich. July 27, 1873 Mrs. Eckler came to Niles from South Bend 30 years ago. Her first husband, Frank Curtis, died in 1936. In 1938 she was married to Charles Eckler who preceded her in death Dec. 21, 1943.

Survivors are a son, Fred Curtis, Niles; four daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Edinger and Mrs. Harold Makepeace, Niles; Mrs. Ora Coleman, Buchanan, and Mrs. Chestine, and 23 grandchildren.

ECKLER RITES

Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Eckler, 71, of 1004 Birch street, who died Wednesday morning in Allegan, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Rutherford funeral home, followed by burial in Silverbrook cemetery. The Rev. O.H. Gerstenkorn, pastor of the Baptist church, will officiate.

Mrs. Rose Espey, Edwardsburg, Dies; Funeral in Niles

Edwardsburg, Aug. 11—Mrs. Rose Espey, 78, died at 6:30 this morning in Pawating hospital after a week's illness. She was born in Cass county Jan. 25, 1866, and spent all her life in the vicinity of Edwardsburg.

Mrs. Espey was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Women of the Moose.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank early, Edwardsburg, three sisters, Mrs. Will Howard, Jackson; Mrs. George Bachmeyer, Kalamazoo, and Mrs. Fred Whitwam, Topeka, Kas., and three brothers, E.T. Dean and Eugene Dean, Chicago, and Alex Dean, Grand Rapids.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger funeral chapel in Niles, where services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:30. Mrs. Ilah Wheeler will read a Christian Science service. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

ESPEY FUNERAL

Services for Mrs. Rose Espey, 78, Edwardsburg, who died Friday morning were read this afternoon in the Price and Kiger funeral chapel by Mrs. Ilah Wheeler.  Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery. Women of the Moose attended the funeral in a group. Pallbearers were Howard Payne, Earl Zechlin, Thomas Flynn, John Tynan, William Maunder and Leslie Brooks.

Florence Fowler, Studebaker Firm Librarian, Dies

Miss Florence C. Fowler, 68, of 10 South Fourth Street, died at 10 this morning in her home after poor health for some time due to a heart ailment. This November Miss Fowler would have completed 44 years as librarian for the Studebaker company in South Bend.

Born in Niles Oct. 8, 1875, Miss Fowler was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fowler. All her life was spent in Niles and South Bend.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Howard and Mrs. Lena Morris, Niles; a brother, George W. Fowler, Washington, D.C., and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the family home after noon Wednesday.  The Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster, pastor of the Methodist church of which she was a member, will officiate at services at the Rutherford funeral home Thursday afternoon at 2:30.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

FOWLER RITES

Friends of Miss Florence Fowler, 68, who died Tuesday morning may call at the home at 10 South Fourth street until 9 Thursday morning. Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:30 by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Burial will follow in Silverbrook cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Raymond and Kenneth Morris, Richard Howard, Lyle Giddings and W.S. Wright, all of Niles, and G.A. Reum, South Bend.

Dowagiac Child Dies at Pawating Hospital

Edward Ray Grice, five month old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Grice, 201 First avenue, Dowagiac, died at 9:15 Tuesday night in Pawating hospital after a week's illness.

The infant was born in Lee Memorial hospital, Dowagiac, Apr. 7, 1944.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home where services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

Hammond, Charles Foster

NILES RESIDENT 60 YEARS EXPIRES

A resident of Niles for over 60 years, Charles Foster Hammond, 90, was buried in Silverbrook cemetery today following service at 2 p.m. in the Calvin funeral home, Hartford.

Hammond, who has lived in Hartford for the past 24 years, died Monday afternoon in the St. Joseph sanatorium, St. Joseph.

Born in Mayville, Wis., Aug. 19, 1854, Hammond came to Niles as a small boy.

Surviving are the widow, Ida; a son, Samuel Hammond, Niles, and five daughters Mrs. Bernice Willard, Indianapolis; Mrs. Gladys Hess, Kalamazoo; Mrs. Phyllis Ball, Chicago; Mrs. Alice Ryno, Benton Harbor; and Mrs. Janice Taggert, at home.

Pallbearers were Samuel, Frank L., and Charles S. Hammond, Dr. Waler C. Ball, W.R. Hess and S.C. Woollard.
