WILLIAM J. CONRAD DIES AFTER ILLNESS

Prominent Farmer Dies at Sumnerville Home on Wednesday Night

William J. Conrad, 66, lifelong resident and well known farmer of this district, died at 7 o'clock Wednesday night at his home at Sumnerville after an illness of several months.

He was born near Buchanan, Feb. 7, 1868 where he lived until 1900 when the family moved to the present location.  Mr. Conrad spent his entire life int eh Buchanan -Niles area. On May 10, 1893, he was married to Miss Margaret Nieb who survives him.

The death of Mr. Conrad is the third in the family in the past nine months. His son-in-law, Leon J. Rooks, was drowned June 7, 1933 at Indian lake, and Mrs. Conrad's sister, Mrs. Nora Waldie, died January 7 of this year.

Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by two daughters, Miss Margaret and Mrs. Mable Rooks, at home; three sisters, Mrs.  Harry Swartz, South Bend; Mrs. Ervon McDonald, Three Rivers; and Mrs. John Fowler, Niles; and five brothers, Elfred Conrad, Chicago; Edward Conrad, Interlochen, Mich.; Andrew Conrad, Three Oaks; Jay Conrad, South Bend; and Clayton C. Conrad, Three Rivers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the home at 1:30 o'clock and at 2:30 o'clock in the St. John's Evangelical church, Niles, with the Rev. Theo Eisen officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

CONRAD RITES SATURDAY

Funeral services for William J. Conrad, prominent farmer who died at his home in Sumnerville Wednesday night, will be conducted at the home at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon and in St. John's Evangelical church here at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev. Theo Eisen will be in charge of the services.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

CONRAD FUNERAL HELD

Funeral services for William J. Conrad, who died Wednesday night in his home in Sumnerville, were held at the home at 1:30 o'clock and in St. John's Evangelical church here at 2:30 o'clock today. The Rev. Theo Eisen was in charge.  Burial was in Silverbrook.

DAUGHTER DIES

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Wesselhoft were called to Chicago today by the report of the death of Mrs. Wesselhoft's daughter, Miss Jane Hunter.  Mrs. Wesselhoft had been visiting in Chicago Friday and was shopping with her daughter and reported that she seemed to be in the best of health. The report of her death received early this morning did not give the cause.

Miss Hunter, who was 23 years old, had been employed in Chicago for several months, except for a period this year when she was seriously ill. The body will be brought to the Rutherford funeral home here tonight.

CONDUCT FITCH RITES

Funeral services for Mrs. Jane Hunter Fitch, who died suddenly Saturday morning in Chicago where she resided, were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at First Presbyterian church, the Rev. Guy W. Simon officiating. Burial followed in Silverbrook cemetery.

The deceased is survived by her husband, Frank Fitch, her mother, Mrs. Edward Wesselhoft, a brother Frederick Hunter, a grandmother, Mrs. Lemont Hunter, all of Niles and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hanchett of Berrien Springs.

COLORED YOUTH DIES

Floyd Harrison Flint, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Flint, 1212 North Ninth street, died this morning at the Pawating hospital. He was admitted to the hospital Saturday morning and underwent an operation for a ruptured appendix. Death was due to peritonitis which set in following the rupture.  He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Marjorie, Joan and Patricia Ann, of Niles, and a grandfather, Harrison Flint, Chicago.  The body is at the Rutherford  Funeral home and funeral arrangements have not been completed.

George Foster Dies Monday from Anemia

George Foster, 73, died at 6:15 o'clock Monday night at his home, 32 South Third street. He had suffered from anemia.

Mr. Foster was township treasurer and clerk several years ago. He was the son of George Foster, Sr., and Margaret Johnson, members of two of Berrien county's oldest families. The Fosters imigrated[sic] from county Down, Ireland, and the Johnson family came from Virginia in 1824.

Mr. Foster was married to Nellie Clark, only daughter of Sydney and Allie Vandenburg Clark on Dec. 18, 1889. With the wife, who survives, is a daughter, Mrs. Edward Bunbury, north of Niles; a grandson, Donald Foster Carmichael; and a sister, Mrs. Edgar Snuff, north of Niles.

Mr. Foster was a member of the Masonic Knights of Pythias, Knights of Maccabees and Elks fraternal orders, all of Niles.

Friends may call at the home Wednesday afternoon until the time of the funeral which will be held at the Price and Kiger funeral home at 2 o'clock Thursday.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Elks will be in charge.

FOSTER RITES THURSDAY

Last rites for George Foster, who died Monday night at his home, 32, South Third street, will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Price and Kiger Funeral home. Dr. G.W. Simon of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will follow in Silverbrook cemetery with the local Elks lodge in charge.

Edward Frederick Dies Early Sunday

Edward Frederick, 67, died at 2 o'clock Sunday morning in the county infirmary. He was for many years employed on the section of the Michigan Central railroad.  The deceased was born in Youngstown, N.Y., Feb. 16, 1867.

Surviving are three stepdaughters, Mrs. Lucille . . [illegible] . . .Hensley, Otsego, Mich.; Doris Rood, Healthwin sanitarium, near South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Rutherford funeral home in charge of the Rev. M.R. Everett, pastor of the Evangelical church. Interment will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

HOLD FREDERICK RITES

Funeral services for Edward Frederick, 67, who died Sunday morning in the county infirmary, were held at 10:30 o'clock this morning at the Rutherford funeral home. The Rev. M.R. Everett, pastor of the Evangelical church, was in charge.  Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.

Graham, George H.

George H. Graham, 65, of Hillsdale, died at 9 p.m. Thursday in his home as the result of a heart attack.

Graham leaves his widow, Lillie; one daughter, Mrs. Vincent Nichols, of Hillsdale, and a son, Max, of Niles; five grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, Mrs. John Winn, of Niles, Mrs. Arthur Roach, of Niles, Mrs. George Frost, of Clearwater, Fla., and Dr. Will T. Graham, of Niles.

Graham was born in Port Credit, Canada, on April 7, 1883, and at the time of his death was the retired manager of the Michigan Bell Telephone company at Hillsdale. He was a past president of the Rotary club there and a member of the Telphone[sic] Pioneers of America.

His body will arrive here about noon Monday and services will be conducted at 4 p.m.  Monday at the Pifer funeral home.  A Christian Science reader will conduct the service, and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

Henderson, Ray

Ray Henderson Dies at Hospital Sunday

Ray Henderson, CWA worker who became ill recently while at work on the Niles high school project, died at 12:15 o'clock Sunday morning in Pawating hospital.

The deceased, who lived at 17 ½ Parkway, came to Niles three years ago from Gary, Ind. He was born in Hoboken, N.J. On March 22, 1877.  Besides his widow, his is survived by a daughter, Leone, 14, and a son, Ray Jr., 12.

Funeral services will be held at the Troost and Turner funeral home at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. H.L. Nicholson in charge.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home up until time of the funeral.

Henderson Rites Held

Funeral services for Ray Henderson, who died in Pawating hospital at 12:15 o'clock Sunday morning, were held at 1:30 o'clock today at the Troost and Turner funeral home with the Rev. H.L. Nicholson officiating. Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery. Pallbearers were William Weiser, Arthur Stone, P.B. Williams, George Correll, Harry Fox and Floyd Wood.
