Robert L. Stephens, 72, of 1312 Sheridan Ave. died at 9:22 a.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital at South Bend following an extended illness.

A veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 26, Stephens was a retired employee of the Tyler Refrigeration Company.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1907, in Fayette, Alabama.  He was married on March 13, 1945, to Helen A. Collins, who survives.

He had been a resident of the city since 1932, when he moved here from South Bend.

In addition to his wife, also surviving are two sons, Richard L. Shinholt of New Castle, Texas, and Gary E. Shinholt of South Bend; one daughter, Mrs. Barbara Truesdell of Niles; four sisters, Mrs. Cora Self of Tarrant City, Alabama; Mrs. Vera Hollis and Mrs. Lois Rees, both of Birmingham, Alabama, and Mrs. Wilma Drake of Memphis, Tennessee, and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Halbritter Funeral Home. The Rev. Arnold O. Schaap of Edwardsburg will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
