DeSonia, Peggy McClary (Bennett)

Peggy McClary DeSonia
June 17, 1903-June 22, 1987

Peggy McClary DeSonia, 84, a resident of the St. Paul's Retirement Home in South Bend, Ind., died Monday at 12:27 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
She was born June 17, 1903 in Niles and lived in South Bend since 1955, coming from Niles.  She married Elmer McClary in Niles in 1926.  He died in 1951. On Jan. 15, 1955 she married Fred G. DeSonia, who died Dec. 8, 1967.
Se was a retired clerk at J.C. Penney in South Bend and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in South Bend.
Survivors include a son, Eugene McClary of Zelienotle, Pa.; a brother, O. J. Bennett of Niles and two grandchildren.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road in South Bend.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Robbins, Anna M.

Anna M. Robbins
May 15, 1891-June 20, 1987


Anna M. Robbins, 96, 625 Chicago Road, Niles, died at 4:08 a.m. in her home on Saturday, after a lengthy illness.

Born May 15, 1891, in Kitchner, Ontario, Canada, she moved to the area from Wisconsin in 1936 with her husband, Warren, who died two years later.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Frank and Floyd Robbins, both of Niles; three daughters, Mabel Robbins of Joliet, Ill., Rose Dittmar and Helen Kline, both of Niles; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Services are 7 tonight at the Pifer-Smith Funeral Home with Gaspar Colon of Seventh-day  Adventist Church officiating. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home prior to the start of services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Niles.

Teske, Gaylord L.

Gaylord L. Teske
June 2, 1911-June 21, 1987


Gaylord L. Teske, 76,, North 16th St., Niles, died Sunday at 5:47 p.m. at Pawating Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born June 2, 1911 in Niles. He had lived in Niles since 1973, coming from Wauwatosa, Wis.  He married June M. Bachman Nov. 3 in Niles. She survives.

He was a retired employee of Gugler Lithographers in Milwaukee, Wis., and was a member of the St. Joseph Valley Lodge No. 4 F & A.M.

Survivors also include two stepsons, Fred Bachman of Emmonsk, Alaska and Robert of Sparks, Nev.; a daughter, Joy Rowley of East Ely, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Bonnie McNeill of Metamora; two brothers, Edward Teske of Niles and Frank Teske of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Gladys Pagels of Niles; and seven grandchildren.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Halbritter Funeral Home.  Phyllis Castle, of the Reader-First Church of Christ, Scientist, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call an hour prior to service time at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the First Church of Christ, Scientist Memorial Fund.

Mrs. Laura Salee, 89, formerly of Niles, died Friday morning in her home on 1063 Middlebury St., Elkhart, Ind.

Mrs. Salee was born Aug. 21, 1870, in Niles, the daughter of George and Mary Smith and was married on June 25, 1896, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Charles M. Salee, who preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1946.

Surviving are a son, George Salee, Elkhart, Ind., two daughters, Mrs. Lindon Shearer and Miss Mary Jane Salee, both Elkhart; five grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the Stemm Funeral home, 214 Division St., Elkhart, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  Saturday and Sunday.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. W.W. Kennell, pastor of the Elkhhart First Evangelical United Brethren Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

 

Miars, John D.

John D. Miars
April 29, 1872-Jan. 18, 1960

John D. Miars, 87, formerly of Niles, . . . [illegible] . . . Memorial Hospital, Orlando, Fla. He had been living at 2919 Sylvan Dr., Orlando.

He was born April 29, 1872, in Berrien Township and spent most of his life in Berrien County, moving to Florida in 1956.  He was a member of Western Star Masonic Lodge No. 30, Berrien Springs.

Mr. Miars' wife, Myrtle, died Jan. 1, 1938. He is survived by one son, Graydon E. Miars, South Bend, and one grandson.

Friends may call at the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home beginning at noon Wednesday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Burial Made Here for Former Operator of Niles Grocery Store

Funeral services for Charles Goodling, 69, 602 Lincolnway East, South Bend, was conducted Wednesday afternoon in South Bend. Burial was made in Silverbrook cemetery, Niles.

Goodling, former operator of a grocery store in Niles, died at St. Joseph hospital, South Bend, of a heart attack.

Surviving him are four sons, Herbert, of Springfield, Ill., Harold, Homer and Gordon of South Bend.  Goodling's wife preceded him in death five years ago.  The only daughter died in 1920 while the family was living in Niles.

 

Goodling, Norman E.

Norman E. Goodling
April 27, 1878-Dec. 25, 1961


Norman Ellsworth Goodling, 84, 227 Owens St., died at 11:55 p.m. Monday in Pawating Hospital after a long illness.

He was born April 27, 1878, in Lydick, Ind., and had been a resident of Niles for 50 years.  He was employed by National Standard for 19 years before retiring in 1948.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, whom he married Nov. 27, 1912; two sons, Ray E. Goodling, 223 N. 6th and Donald Arthur Goodling, 2213 S. 3rd St. Rd., two daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Irene) Shetterly, Cassopolis, and Mrs. Jack (Helen) Shetterly, Muskegon; 11 grandchilden, 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Weiss, Mishawaka, and Mrs. Walter Smith, Charleston, W.Va., and a brother, Theodore H. Goodling, Lockport, N.Y.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home after Wednesday noon. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the  funeral home with the Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
