Lillian H. Holmer, 94, of Dowagiac, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Maple Lake Assisted Living in Paw Paw.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Monday, July 26, 2021, at 11:30 a.m., at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, with Pastor Roy Jeffery officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles. Lillian was born on April 17, 1927, in Chicago, to Harvey & Emma (Optiz) Beck. In 1945, she attended Cook County School of Nursing and earned a diploma in nursing. She continued her education by earning a Minor in Business from Michigan State University and a Masters in Hospital Administration from Northwestern University. On Sept. 17, 1955, Lillian married the love of her life, Walter A. Holmer, Jr., in Watervliet. The two were happily married for 20 years before his passing in 1975. Lillian had a passion for helping people and knew nursing was a way to achieve that. She held various different positions while nursing such as being a director, a charge and float nurse, administrative resident and assistant, and nurse consultant until her retirement in 1989. Lillian also loved to travel the states with her family and friends visiting states such as Alaska, Colorado, Washington and more. She would also travel to various different bowl games to cheer on her Michigan State Spartans. While living on the lake, Lillian enjoyed hosting events for friends and family and taking full advantage of what mother nature had to offer. Other hobbies of hers were golfing, bowling and square dancing.

Lillian is survived by her son, Paul Holmer, of Dowagiac, and her dear friend, John (Colleen) Nametz. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey & Emma, and husband, Walter.

James “Jim” Robert Brady, 77, of Niles, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

Jim was born on March 18, 1944, to the late Robert and Mildred (Prather) Brady. After graduating from high school, Jim married his high school sweetheart, Judith A. Bata, and together they had three children, Tanya, Jason, and Lisa. Jim loved spending time with his family and enjoyed coaching all of his children during school. He was a baseball, basketball, and softball coach for the boys and girls teams. Jim also enjoyed going to the horse track and betting on his favorite horses.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Brady, and his mother, Mildred Taylor.

Jim is survived by his children, Tanya (Sean) McNelis, of Niles, Jason (Jennifer) Brady, of West Minster, California, and Lisa Fisk, of Niles; grandchildren, Jaxx (Larissa) Tripp, Janell Tripp, Leah Tripp, Joshua McNelis, Amanda Cruz, Justin Cruz, Mason Brady, Gavin Rasler, Bella Rasler, Zaine Fisk, and Lanie Fisk; great-grandchildren, Jayse, Paislee, Tayte, and Kohlson; and many extended family members and close friends.

Jim’s family will be hosting a memorial gathering at a later date.

On Dec. 7, 2021, Roger Hargreaves, of Niles, passed away peacefully of natural causes. Roger was born in Niles on March 28, 1942, to the late George and Josephine (Cerlesi) Hargreaves, and raised along Oak Street with his brother, Gary. Roger was a three-sport athlete at Niles High School competing on the football, basketball, and golf teams. He also began dating his future wife, Luann, while in high school which eventually led to a marriage that flourished for almost six decades.

Roger attended Central Michigan University on a golf scholarship where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. Roger returned home to work for the Niles Community Schools initially as a gym teacher but served most of his career as an administrator. Over the next 38 years, Roger became a fixture in the Niles education system serving in various positions which included Assistant Principal (Ring Lardner), Assistant Principal (Niles High School) and Athletic Director (NHS).

Throughout his career, Roger had a significant impact on many kids, families and colleagues in the Niles community. Roger enjoyed coaching youth sports such as football, basketball, tennis and golf over the years. Roger will primarily be remembered as the head coach of the Niles girls varsity basketball team, a highly successful program that Roger helped develop and foster for over a decade.

In 1995, Roger transitioned from his role as an Administrator to a guidance counselor. He welcomed the change by describing it as shedding the “strict guy” persona to become everyone’s “Mr. Nice Guy.” Roger served in that capacity for eight more years before retiring in 2003.

In his free time, Roger enjoyed playing golf, paddle tennis, and spending time with his “bride,” family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his spouse. He is survived by his two sons, Paul (Susie Weldy) Hargreaves, of Niles, and Dan (Wendy) Hargreaves, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; his brother, Gary (Della) Hargreaves, of Cape Coral, Florida; sister-in-law, Sue Harger, of Niles; grandchildren, Lauren, Michael, Mathew, Madison, Chloe, Brian, Brittney, Taylor, and Toby; three great-grandchildren; along with nieces (Tracee, Tami), nephews (Todd, John and Craig) and many close friends.

The family would like to recognize the staff at Buchanan Meadows and Caring Circle Hospice for their compassionate care of Roger.

Funeral services will be held on Jan. 15, 2022, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with a time of visitation, Jan. 14, 2022, from 4 -8 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home.

Hargreaves, Luann (Harger) 1942-2021

On Aug. 28, 2021, Luann Hargreaves, of Niles, passed away peacefully at Brentwood of Niles after a brief illness.

Luann was born in Niles on Oct.  8, 1942, to the late Donald and Dorothy (Crippen) Harger. She was raised in Niles with her brother, D. Richard, and graduated from Niles High School in 1960. Luann attended Michigan State University for two years where she earned an Associate’s Degree in business and joined the Sigma Kappa Sorority.

On Aug. 10, 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Roger Hargreaves. The wedding took place at the First Presbyterian Church in Niles. The couple would spend the next five decades in Niles raising their two boys, working in and around the local community, and enjoying the comradery of their friends and family. Approximately eight years ago, they moved to Granger, Indiana, but Niles has always remained their haven.

Luann retired in 2000 after having been employed by Harger Accounting and Tax Services in Buchanan, Michigan and the Niles Community School System.

Luann believed in service to her community and helped as a volunteer with both the Niles Service League and the Meals on Wheels program. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Niles where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. Luann also enjoyed membership in the Ladies Historical Society and the Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan.

In her free time, Luann enjoyed playing paddle tennis at Signal Point, a game of bridge, and traveling around the country with Roger. However, Luann’s primary focus was always directed towards supporting and caring for her family and friends.

Luann was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. She is survived by her husband, Roger; two sons, Paul (Susie Weldy) Hargreaves, of Niles, and Dan (Wendy) Hargreaves, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Sue Harger, of Niles; brother-in-law, Gary (Della) Hargreaves, of Cape Coral, Florida; grandchildren, Lauren, Michael, Mathew, Madison, Chloe, Brian, Brittney, Taylor, and Toby; three great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, dear friends, and her grand dogs, Luna and Barron.

The family would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Brentwood of Niles and Caring Circle Hospice for their compassionate care of Grandma Lulu. The family would also like to recognize Brenda and April for the comfort and care they provided to her.

Funeral Services for Luann will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Niles with Rev. Christopher Mergener officiating. Family will receive guests beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be privately held at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

Obituary

Dora M. Gross, 88, of Niles, passed away on Tuesday July 6 after a lengthy illness.

Dora was born on March 20, 1933 in Niles to the late Cecil and Bessie (Fulkerth) Hart.

On July 12, 1951 in Buchanan she married Robert Gross who passed away in 1992.

She is also preceded in death by her sons, Robert Jr. and Daniel Gross, as well as her 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Patricia (Kurt) Shepard of Niles, grandchildren; Raven, Bill, Brent, Steven, and Marita, great grandchildren; Ella, Drake, Peyton, Lily, Niklaus, Matthew, Tyler and Damon.  She is also survived my numerous nieces and nephews.

Dora had worked at Gene’s Polly Clean many years ago.  She enjoyed collecting knickknacks and unique items.  Dora also enjoyed sewing.  She was a Cubs and Braves fan.  Dora and her special friend Denver Bartley would go for walks all over town.  It was common to see the two of them strolling down the street.  More than anything, Dora loved her family.  It was always a special time for her when she was able to be with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

A graveside service for Dora will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Silverbrook Cemetery at 11am.

Obituary of Roy Westbrook Miller

Roy Westbrook Miller, 95, of Niles, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021, at his home. He was born on June 2, 1926, in Boston Georgia, to the late Thomas and Pearl (Roper) Miller. In 1943, he moved with his family to Michigan, where he met and married the former Katherine E. Wanko, on December 23, 1950, they had celebrated fifty years of marriage before her passing in 2001. In February of 2004, he married Agnes Wilson; they shared five years together before her passing in 2009. Roy was a farmer for many years and would have loved to have spent his lifetime farming. Out of necessity he went into the workforce and worked for several different manufacturing companies throughout his lifetime. Roy was a very talented woodworker, creating many beautiful pieces, which his family will forever value and count as treasures. At ninety-five he still took great pride in his garden and being able to maintain his home. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Katherine Miller; second wife, Agnes Miller; brother, Dr. Thomas (Violet) Miller; and a sister, Betty (Fred) Young. Roy is survived by his two daughters, Sandra (Gary) Dickson of Normal, Illinois; Barbara (Joe) Curry of Rockhill, South Carolina; son, Thomas Miller of Niles; two grandchildren, Ryan Curry of Rockhills South Carolina; Logan (Alejandra) Curry of Cramerton, North Carolina; great-granddaughter Penelope Curry; brothers, Rev. Henry (Carolene) Miller of Tremont, Illinois; Herbert (Marcia) Miller of Statesville North Carolina; along with several nieces, nephews, and extended family. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM, on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 521 E. Main St in Niles. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
