Anne Vogelsang, 90, of Niles, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, Aug. 27, 2021, at Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in Niles.

She was born on Nov. 3, 1930, in Benton Harbor, Michigan to the late George and Zora (Hosbein) Gaunder.

Anne married Mark Anthony and to that union three children were born, Mark Jr., Beth and Marcia. Mark Anthony passed shortly before the birth of their daughter, Marcia. In February of 1955 Anne married John R. “Jack” Vogelsang, Jr. at a ceremony in Niles; they had a son, John R. Vogelsang III.

A homemaker most of her life, Anne relished raising her children and being an attentive grandmother. Anne also enjoyed gardening, working crossword puzzles, playing cards, going fishing and bowling on local leagues for many years. Anne was also an avid football fan cheering on both Notre Dame and the University of Michigan. She also looked forward to watching Detroit Tigers baseball. Anne’s faith was extremely important to her and she tried her best to live a Christian life each day. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church, in Niles.

Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Mark Anthony Sr. and John “Jack” Vogelsang Jr.; a daughter, Marcia Anthony; and her siblings, Alice Ferris, George “Bud” Gaunder, Fran Herzog, Mary Jean O’Brien and Jim Gaunder.

She is survived by her children, John R. Vogelsang III (Theresa Boller), of Niles, Mark (Triana) Anthony Jr., of Lake Marian, Illinois, and Beth (Pat) Boyd, of Tampa, Florida; seven grandchildren, Trisha, Sara, Derek, Leigha, Joanna, David and Bella; nine great-grandchildren, Skyler, Anna, Andrew, Sam, Allie, Abbie, Macy, Sadie, and Ayrielle; her siblings, Joe Gaunder, of Missouri, Kathryn Lee, of Edwardsburg, and John Michael Gaunder, of Florida. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Anne will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Niles with Father Peter Rocca, C.S.C. officiating. A time of visitation will begin on one hour prior at the funeral home. An interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Anne’s memory to St. Mark Catholic Church at 19 N. 19th Street, Niles, Michigan 49120.

Obituary of Ronald Kennedy

Ronald C. Kennedy, 75, of Niles, passed away peacefully in his home on August 31st, 2021. Born and raised in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Ronald was a man of nature and enjoyed the outdoors. Not long after getting through high school he joined the United States Army and was a proud veteran for the rest of his life. During the course of his early life journey Ronald found the love of his life, Bonnie Marie Bedford. Bonnie married him and took his last name on October 18th, 1969 in the beautiful town of Pueblo, Colorado. Their union soon brought them two sons, James and Cale Kennedy. Their family continued to grow as their sons gave them grandchildren, Chaise, Gaige, Kadence, and Jade Kennedy. Aside from being a proud grandpa, Ronald spent his spare time hunting, fishing, woodworking, and watching NASCAR. With his time spent as a journeyman machine repair technician, he was also a proud member of the United Auto Workers Union Post 2093. The end of his life was spent enjoying his family and doing the things he loved the most. Ronald is preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie; and both of his parents, Clifford and Maudine (Breedlove) Kennedy. He is survived by both of his sons, James (Melissa) Kennedy of Niles, and Cale Kennedy of Niles; four grandchildren; his two siblings, Sharon (Ron) Hess of Dowagiac, and Tim (Donna) Kennedy of Mentone, Indiana; and many friends and extended family members. The family will be holding funeral services for Ronald on Friday September 3, 2021 at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Niles at 2:00 p.m. with public visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. An interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery where Full Military Honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army and the Buchanan American Legion Post 51. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buchanan American Legion at 403 E Front Street, Buchanan, Michigan 49107. Obituary

Robert A. Yudis, 89 of Niles, passed away on August 18, 2021 in Spectrum Lakeland Hospital.

Bob was born on July18, 1932 in Chicago.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his two children, Mark and Stephen Yudis.

Bob is survived by his wife Sara and his sister Virginia Little of Arizona.

Bob honorably served his country in the United States Airforce. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to beaches and parks to use his metal detector. Bob would help people by using his metal detector to find lost rings.

A visitation for Bob will be held on August 25, 2021 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home 615 E. Main St. Niles.  Cremation will follow and burial will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery at a later date.

Raymond H. Basore, 83, of Niles, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021, at Riveridge Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Niles.

He was born on Dec. 12, 1937, in Flint, Michigan to the late Newton H. and Ruby (Bell) Basore.

Raymond graduated from Technical High School and furthered his education attending Anderson College where he received a bachelor of science degree. On June 29, 1957, he was married by his father-in-law, Rev. Schrock at his church in Monroe, Michigan to Darla Mae Schrock with whom he celebrated the 62 anniversary of their wedding prior to her passing on July 2, 2019. He came to Niles in 1972 with his wife, and they opened the “Good News Shop” Christian bookstore which they owned and operated in several locations in Niles for more than 40 years. The bookstore was more than a business for Raymond; it was a continuation of his ministry to others.

Raymond was a faithful member of Michiana Christian Embassy for many years. Prior to owning the bookstore, Raymond pastored the Buchanan Church of God for five years as well as taught school including several years at Moccasin Elementary in Buchanan. He was an avid reader and enjoyed learning and frequent visits to the Niles Public Library.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darla Basore.

Raymond is survived by his children, Randy (& Pam) Basore, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kevin (& Laura) Basore, of Niles, Michigan, and Tim (& Gail) Basore. of Sparks, Nevada; grandchildren, Joe (& Kendall) Basore, Shannon (& Tyler) Howard, Tiffany (& Ethan) VanderWeele, Justin Basore, Jordan Basore, Olivia Basore, Colby Basore, Josh (& Chloe) Leach, Jonah Leach, Adrienne Leach, Amelia (& Dimeko) Price; great-grandchildren Kali, Alexis, Lydia, Harvey, Aubrey, Celeste, Brody, Mia, Makayla, Eden, Brooklyn, Clarke, Isaac, Skyler, Caleb, Audie and Phoenix; a sister, Joy Barber of Flint, Michigan and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 28 2021, at 11 a.m. at Michiana Christian Embassy, 1922 E. Main St. in Niles, with Pastor Jeffrey Whittaker of the church officiating. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. A private committal service will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles. The services for Raymond will be livestreamed, on his page, at our website.

Edward L. “Bobby” Smith, Sr., 79, of Niles, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Oct. 26, 1941, in Gobler, Missouri to the late Ernest and Edna (Cox) Smith.

Edward, also known to many as Bobby and Smitty, worked for many years at Clark Eqiupment in Buchanan, Coop Steel in South Bend and then retired from the Southeast Berrien County Landfill Authority in Buchanan. On June 27, 1961, he wed Almarie Canady at a ceremony in Cleveland, Arkansas. The couple recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his gift of storytelling and his ability to make friends with everyone he came in contact with. Edward was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Deborah Smith-Rodriguez; his brothers, Richard Starnes, Hugh Smith and J.C. Starnes as well as his sisters, Vilee Lauderdale and Naomi McCall.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Almarie “Ree” Smith, of Niles; his children, DeAngela “Ann” Smith, of Niles, Edward “Ed” Smith, Jr. (Patty Barnhart), of South Bend, Anthony “Tony” Smith, of Niles and Reginald “Reggie” Smith, of Niles; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Ethel Cox, of Kansas City, Missouri, Dorothy Allen, of Niles, Patsy and Pearl Nelson, both of Kansas City, Missouri and Mamie McDaniel, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and countless others.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Niles with a time of visitation one hour prior. An interment will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 30, 2021 at 10 a.m.

Richard James “Dick” Dunham, 79, of Niles, Michigan died on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015, at Buchanan Meadows following an extended illness. Dick was born Oct. 28, 1935, in Cassopolis, Michigan to Lyle Luman and Edna Mae (Carroll) Dunham.

Dick was a 1953 graduate of Niles High School where he was a remarkable athlete, lettering in football, baseball and wrestling. He was a United States Navy Veteran, having served from 1953-1956. He then attended and graduated from Michigan State University in 1961. Dick was employed by Travelers Insurance for over 30 years, retiring in 1990.

On June 24, 1961, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, Dick married Georgina “Gina” Barron, who survives in Niles with their sons, Sean (Jennifer) Dunham of Bemidji, Minnesota, Daniel (Hahn) Dunham of Rigby, Idaho and James Dunham of Three Rivers, Michigan, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dick is also survived by one sister, Jayne Dunham of Niles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce Dunham, and his brother Ronald Dunham.

The funeral service for Dick Dunham will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Rev. Pamela V. Sten officiating. The service will conclude with the Veterans Flag Presentation and TAPS by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Burial will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles at a later date.

Robbins, Everett Jr. 1943-2021

Everett Laverne (Buddy) Robbins Jr., 78, of South Bend, Indiana, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Aug. 13, 2021, in his home surrounded by family.

Buddy was born on July 19, 1943, to Everett Laverne Robbins Sr. and Betty Noreen Robbins in Springfield, Illinois and was the oldest of four children. He was a graduate from Niles High School in Niles, and served in the Navy from 1961 to 1967, being honorably discharged as a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Buddy was a retired Machinist Supervisor and enjoyed working part-time at his church, Grace Church of Granger, Indiana, where he enjoyed many friendships.

On July 20, 1964, in Niles, he married the love of his life, Sandra Jean (Rhoads) Robbins, with whom he recently celebrated the 57th anniversary of their wedding. Buddy loved his two sons, and especially loved camping, hiking, biking and roughhousing with his grandchildren where he lovingly endured many scrapes, bumps, and bruises while trying to keep up. It was rare for Buddy to miss any kind of event for any of his grandchildren, whether far or near. In fact, Buddy’s last venture out of his home was to be at his granddaughter’s birthday celebration on Aug. 3. His family meant the world to him.

Surviving family includes his wife of 57 years, Sandy Robbins; son, Wesley (Scott) and Julia Robbins; son, Jeffrey (Wayne) and Sheri Robbins; his beloved sister, Diana Miller; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Buddy was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his sisters, Wanda and Teresa.

The family will receive relatives and friends from Noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St. in Niles. A funeral service for Buddy Robbins will be at Halbritter Wickens Funeral Home in Niles on Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at 1 p.m., with Rick Wood of Awaken Chicago Church officiating. Committal will follow at the Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles and will conclude with Naval Military Honors.

Contributions in memory of Buddy will be used to erect a new American flag in his honor at Clay Township Park where Buddy worked part-time maintenance and spent many hours walking with his wife and his best four-legged friend, Mocha. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Clay Township Park, Buddy Robbins Memorial Flag, 18355 Auten Road, South Bend, IN 46637.
