Harry E. Marks, 2463 Yankee street, died at 12:30 a.m. today in his home, after a two-month illness.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; two sons, Frederick Harold, of Cody, Wyo., and Harry E. Jr., at home; one daughter, Mrs. Alberta Woodward, Wabash, Ind.; five grandchildren, and one brother, Raymond Marks, Niles.

Marks was born on Nov. 9, 1889, in Grant County, Ind., and came here from Peru, Ind., in 1927. He was a school bus driver for Howard Township, and was a World War I veteran.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, by Lt. Arthur Homer of the Salvation Army. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Mattick, Emily

Mrs. Emily Mattick, 1350 Ferry street, died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday in the Berrien Center Hospital, Berrien Springs. She had been ill for some time.

Surviving are one son, Ernest Mattick, South Bend; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Mattick, Niles, and Herman Mattick, Milwaukee, Wis., and two daughters, Mrs. Theresa Mierau, Berrien Springs, and Mrs. Augusta DePlanque, Germany.

Mrs. Mattick was born in Germany on May 25, 1869, and came here from Berrien Springs 17 years ago.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home until 12 noon Saturday, when the body will be taken to the New Apostolic church. Services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the church by the pastor, the Rev. Hugh Lee, and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

NILES WOMAN DIES IN GEORGIA CRASH

3 Others from City Injured in Head-on Accident

Mrs. Frank B. May, 59, is victim of highway Mishap at Dalton, Ga.

 

A Niles woman was killed and three other Nilessites were injured . . .[illegible] . .May, 59, of rural route two.

Injured were Frank May, husband of the victim, and Mr.and Mrs. Barnell Martin, their son-in-law and daughter. All were taken to a hospital in Dalton. The Martins' one-year-old daughter, Sandy Kay, was also in the car but escaped injury.

According to word received here, May suffered fractures of the nose and one leg and Mrs. Martin sustained foot injuries and lacerations. The exact nature of Martin's injuries were not known but it was reported that he was unable to move his legs after the crash.

Relatives here said that the crash occurred when a car travelling in the opposite direction pulled out to pass a line of cars and crashed headon into Martin's car.

The Nilesites were on their way home from a Florida vacation when the mishap occurred.

Complete information in the accident awaits the return of Mrs. May's son-in-law, Russell Shoemaker, 507 Michigan, and a Niles funeral director who went to Dalton to make arrangements to have the body brought here. The patients will be moved to a hospital in this area if it is possible.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Barbara Miller, Nappanee, Ind., her husband Frank, of Niles; three daughters, Mrs. Russell Shoemaker Sr., Mrs. Roland Gordon and Mrs. Barnell Martin, all of Niles; two sons, George May, Niles, and Wilbur May, Union, Mich., 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; five brothers, Lester Miller, Indianapolis, Atlye and Carl Miller, Nappanee, Ind. Harold Miller, Elkhart, Ind, and Clayton Angemyer, Nappanee, and one sister, Mrs. Ray Thomas, Syracuse, Ind.

Mrs. May was born on Sept. 2 1893, in Ohio, and came here from Nappanee in 1923.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home starting Thursday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Saturday, and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

 

 

McBride, Robert L.

Robert L. McBride, 71, 516 North Second street, died Thursday afternoon in the Quick's Rest Home.  He had been ill three years.

McBride was born in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, on April 7, 1881. He came to this area while young, and lived here most of his life time.

Two sisters, Anna McBride and Grace McBride, both of Niles survive.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. T.M. Greenhoe officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

Thomas, Clifford E.

Clifford E. Thomas, 49, of 512 Grant street, died suddenly at 10 a.m. Sunday morning in a hospital at Ann Arbor.

Thomas was born June 14, 1903, in Mt. Pelier, Ind., and came here from Portland, Ind. 24 years ago.

While in Niles he was employed as a barber.

Surviving are: his wife, Vanrhie, his mother, Mrs. Mary Thomas, Niles; five children, Daniel and Patricia, both at home, and Clifford Jr., Robert and Mrs. Robert Johnson, all Niles; two brothers, John, Chicago,and Frank, Portland, Ind., and a sister, Mrs. John Farabaugh, South Bend.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Tuesday in the Kiger Funeral Home with the Rev. L. George Beacock, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Women of Moose are requested to meet at 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home to attend rites for Thomas.

 

Sanders, Thomas J.

Thomas J. Sanders, 1028 North Thirteenth street, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday in his home. He had been ill for two months.

Surviving are his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Mrs. Don McConnell, and Mrs. Simeon Belknap, both of Niles; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Julius Puthoff and Mrs. Sadie Trobaugh, both of Niles; one brother, Robert Allen Sanders, Mattoon, Ill., and one half-brother, John Decker, Sanford, Ind.

Sanders was born on Dec. 3, 1883, in Dundas, Ill., and came here from Charleston, Ill., in February of 1924. He was a retired car inspector for the New York Central Railroad Company. Sanders belonged to the Pioneer Club and to Carmen of America.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Vern Barr, pastor of the First Church of Christ. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

All members of the New Century Rebekah Lodge, Royal Neighbors of America and the Woman's Benefit Association are requested to meet at 1:45 p.m Tuesday at the funeral home to attend the irtes[sic].

 

Wogatzke, Herman Albert

Herman Albert Wogatzke, Pucker street, died at 2:30 a.m. this morning in his home.

Surviving are his wife, Ida; two daughters, Mrs. Herman Baunach, Pokagon, and Mrs. Otto Dehne, Niles; three sons, Paul, Otto and Ernest Wogatzke, all of Niles, and 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Wogatzke was born on Nov. 15, 1878, in Germany and came here from South Bend about two years ago. He was retired and was a member of the New Apostolic Church.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home until noon Saturday when the body will be taken to the Apostolic Church. Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Hugh Lee, pastor, and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
