The body of John Mereness, a former resident of Niles, was brought here today and taken directly to Silver Brook cemetery for burial in the family lot. Mr. Mereness died in Westly hospital in Chicago on Monday, after three days of illness.  Mrs. Ellen Lovejoy Mareness, mother of the deceased, and Mr. and Mrs. Schriver, friends, accompanied the body to Niles.  Mr. Mareness was employe [sic] while in Niles at the French paper mills, and also conducted a news depot here.

DAUGHTER OF PIONEER ROLLO FAMILY IS BURIED IN NILES

 

The body of Mrs. Caroline Rollo Beer, who died on Sunday afternoon at the home of her nephew, Chester R. Hodgkins, at Quincy, Illinois after several weeks illness with pneumonia, arrived in Niles this morning at 11 :00 o'clock, and was taken to the Rutherford Funeral Home.  Burial was made in Silver Brook cemetery this afternoon at 3: 00 o'clock. No services were held here as services had been held in Quincy.

Mrs. Beer was a member of the pioneer Rollo family of Niles, and had many friends in the city. She spent practically all of her childhood and early womanhood here. She was the daughter of late Chester and Fannie Rollo, deceased. She was born in Ypsilanti, January 24, 1839.  A few years later the family moved to Niles. She was a consecrated member of the Niles Presbyterian church and was prominent in the work of that church.

In 1864, she was married to George M. Coan, at one time organist of the Presbyterian church, and lived here until his death in 1881; after which she went to make her home at Rushford, Minnesota. She was married there to W.W. Beer, who died in 1912.  Since Mr. Beer died she had been making her home with her nephew, C. R. Hodgkins, at Quincy, Ill.  No children survive her, her nearest living relatives being Mr.and Mrs. Hodgkins and their daughter, Mrs. H.D. Lapp, of Chicago, who accompanied the  body to Niles.

CAROLINE BOND TAKEN BY DEATH

Pioneer School Teacher Is Suddenly Stricken

 

Miss Caroline Bond, after 24 hours of illness died this morning at 6:30 o'clock at her apartment at 14 S. Seventh street. The cause of death was heart affection which followed an attack of indigestion suffered yesterday.  Her condition became alarming at once, and the attending physician put an nurse on the case early last evening. She suffered the heart attack about 6 o'clock and died before the physician reached her bedside. Miss Bond was in advanced  years.

The funeral plans have not been completed pending the arrival of Mrs. Carrie DeWeese, of Buffalo, N.Y., a niece, who will leave that city for Niles this evening. The services will probably be held on Monday.

Miss Bond was a member of one of Niles pioneer families, her father having been John Bond. She was born in Niles, was educated in the Niles public schools, and was for many years a teacher in the Niles schools. The family home was near Seventh and Broadway until recently when it was sold by Miss Bond. For two winters Miss Bond was in Florida on acount[sic] of her ill health.  She was the last of a family of five girls, one of whom was the wife of Major L.A. Duncan, deceased.

Funeral on Monday


Funeral services for Miss Caroline Bond will be held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at this Presbyterian church. Rev. .T. Scherer will officiate.  Burial will take place in Silver Brook cemetery. The plans for the funeral were made after the arrival here from Buffalo, N.Y., this morning of Mrs. Truman De Weese, a niece of the deceased.  The body may be viewed at the church on Monday between the hours of 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock.

WM BURT FOUND DEAD IN YARD

Body Discovered by Nephew at 1302 N. Fifth Street

 

William Burt, 68, was found dead Sunday morning in the yard at the home of his nephew, Charles Burt, 1302 North Fifth Street. The family retired about 10 o'clock, Saturday night and on Sunday morning about 6:30 o'clock, members of the household found him sitting on a bench in the yard, dead.

Coroner Hardy Langston was notified but he decided that an inquest was not necessary. The deceased had been in ill health for some time, and was known to have suffered with heart disease.

The body was removed to the Troost and Augustine undertaking rooms and the funeral services will be held there tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will take place in Silver Brook cemetery.

The deceased was born in Essex County, N.J. on June 11, 1867. He was brought to Niles by his parents, Martin and Mary Burt when he was about two years old and had had since resided here. For 14 years, he had resided with his nephew, Charles Burt. He followed the occupation of a painter. He is survived by two brothers, Ed Burt, of Omaha, Neb., and Aleck, of Illinois, and by nieces and nephews as follows: Martin Burt, California; Charles, Niles; Mrs. Roy Scott and Mrs. Neola Martin, South Bend; Mrs. Viola Hessen and Mrs. Edna Colburn, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Myrtle Clark, Denver, Colo.

Succumbs Today

 

A resident of Niles since 1881, Henry C. Ehrick, 87, of 910 Regent street, died at 7:15 this morning in his home where he had been ill three weeks.

He was born in Germany July 25, 1857, and came to Niles from there in 1881. He was married to Johanna Eweis here in 1881.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Catherine Boyer, Chicago; three sons, William A. Ehrick, Sr.,and George A Ehrick, South Bend, and Harry F. Ehrick, Mount Bella, Calif. and a sister, Mrs. Dora Linderman, Ann Arbor.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

EHRICK RITES


Funeral services for Henry C. Ehrick, 87, were held at 2 this afternoon in the St. John's Evangelical church with the  Rev. Theo Eisen in charge.  Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery. He died at his home, 910 Regent street Monday morning.

Many Out-of-Town Relatives Here for Ehrich Rites

 

A large number of out-of-town relatives were in Niles Thursday for the funeral of Henry C. Ehrich, 87, who died at his home 910 Regent street, Monday morning.

The Rev. Theo Eisen, in conducting services in St. John's Evangelical church, paid tribute to Mr. Erhrich's long record of faithful service in the church. He was the oldest member of the congregation, both in age and length of membership.

Relatives from out of the city included a sister, Mrs. Louis Lindeman, Ann Arbor, Mrs. August Gembella, Ann Arbor, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ehrich and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ehrich, of North Liberty, Mrs. Mary Hannen, Mishawaka, Mrs. Anna Kiefer, Holland.

Mrs. William Mtchell, Jackson, the Rev. Edwin Ehrich and Frank Ehrich, of Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. George Ehrich, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ehrich and Mr. and Mrs. William Ehrich, of South Bend, and Mrs. Lloyd Boyer, of Chicago.

Acting as pallbearers were Mark Thompson, Donald Connor, William Zerr, Herman Schrumpf, Henry Exner and LeRoy Forler.

AGED WOMAN DIES

 

Mrs. Jennie Davis, 85, died Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock at the home of her nephew, Wyman Carpenter, six miles east of Niles.  Mrs. Davis formerly lived in Boulder, Colo., but since the death of her husband, three years ago, she had been making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church in this city. Rev. H.T. Scherer will officiate. Burial will take place in Silver Brook cemetery.
