Mrs. W.F. Harrah, Widow of N-S Co-Founder, Succumbs

FUNERAL services for Mrs. W.F. (Marie E.) Harrah, 88, widow of William F. Harrah, co-founder of National-Standard Co., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. John MacLachlan, pastor, will officiate.  Interment will be in the Harrah room of the Silverbrook Cemetery mausoleum.

Mrs. Harrah died at 7 a.m. Sunday in her home at Berrien Crest.

She was born Marie Even on Dec. 31, 1874 in Peoria, Ill.  She was married in February 1894 in Des Moines, Iowa, and came to Niles from that city in 1905.  Mr. Harrah founded the National Wire Cloth Co. in that year. It was later the National Cable Co., which merged with the Cook-Standard Tool Co. to become known as the National-Standard Co. She as the first secretary-accountant of he original companies.

Survivors include a son, Clayton C., of Niles, and two grandchildren.

SHE WAS a lifelong member and was active in all activities of the Presbyterian Church, where she established and staffed an emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic in the winter of 1917-18, prior to adequate hospital facilities in Niles. She was in charge of Red Cross medical activities during World War I. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Sans Souci Dancing club, organized during the early war years, the Ladies Reading Club, and the Niles Club of Home Gardens.

Carl S. Hayes
Feb. 18 1885-March 6, 1963

Carl S. Hayes, 78, of 1119 Wayne St., died at 8 a.m. today in Pawating Hospital. He had been ill since Tuesday, and in failing health about five years.

Mr. Hayes was born Feb. 18, 1885 in Ashville, N.C. He came to Niles from Hamlin, Ind., 40 . . .[illegible] . . .inspector for the New York Central Railroad in 1952.

Surviviors[sic] include his wife, Ava; a son, William, Phoenix, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Birdie Pulito, Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Don Young, Ashville; and a brother, Conrad, Alexandria, N.C.

He was a member of the Pioneer Association.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m  Tuesday in the Pifer Funeral Home. The Rev. Earl Wickstrom, pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Maggie Margaret Haynes
Sept. 14, 1890-April 10, 1963

Mrs. Maggie Margaret Haynes, 72, of 2256 Mulder Drive,  died at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday in her home.  She had been ill one month.

Mrs. Haynes was born Sept. 14, 1890, in Almo, Ky. She came to Niles from Cairo, Ill., in 1928. She was married to the Rev. George L. Haynes April 28, 1928, in Benton, Ky. He survives.

Other survivors include a sister, Mrs. Emma Green, Chicago; three nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m .Saturday in her church. The Rev. Theodis Hadley will officiate, assisted by the Rev. S.F. Smith, pastor.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the Kiger Funeral Home.

Harry W. Huss
July 3, 1908-March 5, 1963

Harry W. Huss, 54, of 611 S. Cedar Road, New Lenox, Ill., formerly of Niles, died Friday at Silver Cross hospital there.

Mr. Huss, a yard conductor with the New York Central Railroad in Chicago, was born July 3, 1908, in Urbana, Ill. He lived here for many years before moving to Chicago, and went to New Lenox in 1952.

Survivors include his widow, Emmeline; a son, James W., Berrien Springs; a daughter, Gayle, New Lenox; a brother, Ralph, South Bend; and a granddaughter.

He was a member of the New Lenox Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Baskerville Chapel in New Lenox. The Rev. Alfred H. Hunter will officiate. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Silverbrook Cemetery here.

Friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.

Edward Klann
Feb. 26, 1884-Dec. 12, 1963

Edward Klann, 79, of 1105 Huntley Road, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in his home. He had been ill health two years.

Mr. Klann, a retired farmer, was born Feb. 26, 1884, in Germany. He came to Niles from three Oaks 15 years ago.

Survivors include his widow, Hulda; five sons, Albert and Harold, both of Three Oaks, Niles, Herbert, Detroit and Edward, St. Joseph; four daughters, Mrs. Agnes Donnelly, Sheldon, Wis.,  Mrs. Esther Pretikit, Michigan City, Ind., Mrs. Gladys Bauler, Chicago, and Mrs. Alice Pfauth, Loveland, Colo.; three step-sons, William Albright, Naples, Fla., Max Albrecht, Niles and Clarence Albrecht, Hialeah, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Edward Schadler and Mrs. William Davis, both of Niles, and Mrs. Erich Wokeck, Trout Lake; a sister, Mrs. Ida Scanlon, Benton Harbor; 35 grandchildren, and 40 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home. The Rev. Ernest Lindstedt, pastor of the New Apostolic Church, South Bend, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Lewis R. Koontz
May 25, 1904-Sept. 12, 1943

Lewis R. Koontz, 59, of 1606 Sycamore St., died suddenly at 1:45 a.m. Today in his home.

Mr. Koontz, a retired mail clerk, was born May 25, 1904 in St. Joseph. He came to Niles from Benton Harbor.

Survivors include his widow, Alene; a son, Lewis R. Jr., Mishawaka; a daughter, Mrs. Shirley Faretra, Boston, Mass.; a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Baumbach, Chicago; and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home. The Rev. John MacLachlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.
