Mrs. Ella M. Herring, 84, widow of the late Dr. Nathaniel A. Herring, died this morning in her home at 525 Oak street following an illness of five years.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home until time for the services at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church.   The Rev. T. M. Greenhoe will officiate and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Herring was born in Greenfield, O., on August 10, 1868 and came to Niles 20 years ago from Benton Harbor.

A son, Frederick J. Herring of Little Rock, Ark., and a brother, John Parrett of Greenfield, O., survive.   Dr. Herring died in 1950.

Herman Hertel
August 14, 1904 - February 28, 1970

NILES -- Herman Hertel, 65, of 2705 Creek Road, died at 6:10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an illness of two months.

A retired supervisor for Dawn Fresh Mushroom Co., a division of Green Giant Co., Mr. Hertel was born Aug. 14, 1904, in Sarnstal, Germany.   He had lived here since 1926, coming from his place of birth.   His wife, Gladys, died Dec. 28, 1952.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Edward S. (Frieda Ann) Method of Elkhart and two brothers, Heinrich and Julius, both of Germany.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Halbritter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Theodore Laesch of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating.   Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home. 

Richard W. Jones
Feb. 22, 1915-Aug. 27, 1952

Funeral services for Richard Wilbur Jones, killed Wednesday morning in an auto crash west of Cassopolis, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Connelly Funeral home in Cassopolis. The Rev. T. M. Greenhoe, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate, and burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Jones, who was employed by the Michigan Central railroad here, is survived by the widow, Virda; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Jones, 304 South Fourth street; two sisters, Mrs. Margrette Kelley, Cassopolis, and Miss Estella Jones, also Niles, and two brothers, David (Lilly), of Washington and W. L. Jones, Niles.

DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER

Ansel H. Miller Passed Away Saturday

Ansel H. Miller, a widely known farmer, residing two and one-half miles northwest, died at his home about 5 o'clock last Saturday evening, from the effects of paralysis.  The deceased has resided at his late home for 36 years. He leaves a wife and six children, the oldest of whom, Grenville, resides at Wichita, Kan. The others are as follows:  Sidney, who resides on the Lardner farm, southwest of town; Charles, of this city; Mrs. C.R. Rhodes, of Galien; Miss Bertha, who lived with her parents, and Frank, of Kalamazoo college. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were the parents of ten children, but four of them are deceased.

Mr. Miller's neighbors and host of friends will deeply deplore his loss for he was a man who was universally esteemed. The funeral will occur from the late residence tomorrow at 2 p.m., Rev. Eyles officiating.  Interment in Silver Brook cemetery.

The funeral of the late Anson H. Miller, occurred from the residence, two and one-half miles northwest, this afternoon. The service was conducted at 2 p.m. By Rev. Eyles. A large concourse of the relatives and friends of the deceased joined the melancholy cortege en route to the city of eternal tranquility—Silver Brook cemetery.

Mrs. Birdie Lee Nier

BUCHANAN -- Mrs. Birdie Lee Nier, 62, of 2717 Lewis Dr., Niles, formerly of Buchanan, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday in her home after an illness of several months.

She was born Feb., 1, 1908 in Searcy, Ark. and came to Buchanan in 1960 from Searcy.

She was married to Herman J. Nier on March 21, 1944 in Little Rock, Ark.   He survives.   Also surviving is a son Buirl (Pete) (One line illegible) Laverne Morgan of Buchanan; a foster daughter, Mrs. Brenda C. Vonville of (illegible) Ind., three brothers, Hubert and Robert English, both of Buchanan, and Vernon English of Searcy; two sisters, Mrs. Elvie Wahlstrom of Buchanan and Mrs. Ruby M. Golfer of Toledo, Ohio; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Buchanan General Baptist Church.   Services are pending.

Arrangements are being handled by the Swem Funeral Home, Buchanan. 

Eliza Jane (Smith) Obier

Death of Mrs. Obier

From Monday's Star.

Mrs. Eliza Jane Obier, wife of Th. S. Obier, passed peacefully away early Sunday morning. She was 62 years, one month and three days of age and had been an invalid for the past three years. Her demise is attributed to senile paralysis.

Mrs. Obier was a pioneer resident of this vicinity, having come here with her husband 29 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Obier upon their arrival in Michigan first settled in Milton township, near Smith's chapel. Later on they removed to Barron Lake where they resided until a few years ago when they again moved to this city.

The deceased was born in Delaware and was married in the state 45 years ago. She was the mother of nine children, eight of whom, together with  her husband, survive her.

The children are all here with the single exception of one son who could not be located.

Those who were in attendance at the funeral were as follows: John, of Chicago; William, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Samuel, of Toledo; Mrs. Chas. Golden, of Chicago; Mrs. Fred Osler, of this city and Fred and Florence, also of this place.
