DEATH CLAIM PIONEER RESIDENT
Mrs. William B. Grey Had Lived in Niles About 70 Years

Death removed a pioneer resident of Niles this morning at an early hour when Mrs. Harriett Grey, widow of William Bartley Grey, passed peacefully away at her home, 302 Sycamore street.  Mrs. Grey had been an invalid for the past six years. Since last August Mrs. Grey has been confined to her bed.

Mrs. Grey was born in Miamisburg, O., 86 years ago last September. Her maiden mane was Harriett Gephart. She had resided in Niles for about 70 years. Most of her married life has been passed in the home on the courner of Sycamore and Third street, graciously dispensing hospitality to friend and stranger alike. Mr. Grey's death occurred about 33 years ago. Mrs. Grey is survived by one daughter, Miss Kate Grey, who has deemed it a privilege to devote her llfe almost exclusive to all other interests to her mother's care.

The funeral services will probably be held on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Grey was one of the oldest members of Trinity Episcopal church and until her health failed, was active in its work.

MRS. BARTLEY GRAY, NILES' OLDEST RESIDENT, DIED TODAY

Mrs. Bartley Gray, the oldest resident of Niles, died at her home, 302 Sycamore street, at 2:30 o'clock this morning, after an illness with bronchial trouble which covered a period of six years. Mrs. Gray had been bedridden since a year ago last August.

She was born in Miamisburg, Ohio, 86 years ago and had lived in this city continuously for over 65 years.

Mrs. Gray was one of those dear old women whom everyone loved. Her departure is regretted by the community. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Kate Gray.

Funeral will take place from the residence Thursday afternoon, the exact hour not having been set.

Friends are requested to omit flowers.

Monoxide Fumes Fatal to Man, 62

Guy W. Thompson, 62, 703 North Sixth street, wsa found dead of carbon monoxide fumes at 6:30 p.m. in the garage at his residence. Coroner Willam N. Pifer indicated Thompson committed suicide.

Born in Galien Township

He was born Aug. 3, 1883, in Galien township and moved to Niles from Three Oaks in 1917.  He had been employed as a yard conducter on the Michigan Central railroad, and was a member of the Switchman's union of North America.

Surviviors include his widow, Mrs. Lennie Thompson, two daughters, Mrs. Esther Conrad, Niles, and Mrs. Jean Purnalis, Barron lake; five sons, Earl and Everett, at home: Elton, 1425 Oak street, Leonard, Sturgis; and Harold, of Niles.; two brothers, Clayton Thompson, Jackson, and Lloyd Thompson, Ann Arbor; one step-brother, Fred Solloway, 410 North Eleventh street, and five grandchildren.

Hold Rites Friday

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday from the Pifer funeral home with the Rev. Theo Eisen officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of the services.

Committal Rites on Thursday for Former Nilesite

Commital[sic] services will be held at Silverbrook mausoleum Thursday at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Irene Scamehorn, 53, of 736 North Elwood, Oak Park,Ill., who died in a Chicago hospital late Monday afternoon following an operation.

Born July 3, 1892, she was marred to Ross D. Scamehorn on May 8, 1915 and lived in Niles until about 18 years ago. For the past 10 years they have lived in Oak Park.

The body will be at the Postlewaite Funeral home in Oak Park until Wednesday at 4 p.m. when services will be held at the Oak Park First Methodist church of which she was a member.

The committal service will be held in Niles Thursday at 3 p.m.

Anne Zimmerman

Mrs. Zimmerman Dies Wednesday

Mrs. Anne Zimmerman, 79, 320 Lake street, died Wednesady at 11:15 p.m. in her home after a short illness.

She was born in Germany, March 23, 1867, and came to Niles 58 years ago.  her husband, Adam Zimmerman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ralph Fickes, 1203 North Seventh street; one son, Roy Zimmerman, 530 Lake street; three brothers, William Asmus, 1312 North Front street; August Asmus, 207 1/2 North Second street; and Carl Asmus, Pasadena, Cal.; two grand children and three great grandchildren.

Hold Rites Saturday

Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of the Royal Neighbors society and the St. John's Evangelical Reformed church.

Services will be conducted Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from the residence with the Rev. Theo Eisen of St. John's church officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery under the direction of the Kiger funeral home. Friends may call at the residence.

Former Nilesite Dies in Chicago; Services Monday

Mrs. Louise Burnham, former resident of Niles for 15 years, died Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Chicago Memorial hospital. For the past three years she has lived in Chicago with a daughter, Mrs. Edith Cohan.

Widow of the late George A. Burnham, who died trhee years ago, she is survived by two children, Mrs. Cohan, in Chicago, and a son, Jack Burnham, Paris, Ill.; two grandchildren, three sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Chicago after which the body will be brought to Niles. Friends may call Sunday night at the Pifer funeral home where services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. by the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, pastor of the First Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. Harriette Ball Stricken Suddenly from Heart Attack

Mrs. Harriette May Ball, 72, of 2200 North Fifth street, died Thursday at 8 p.m. in her home. Death came suddenly from a heart attack.

She was born in Ada, March 15, 1874, and came to Niles from Grand Rapids in 1919. She was married to Ezra Ball, Feb. 11, 1897, in Grand Rapids. her husband died in 1927.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Charles Bruycker, Oxford; Mrs. Charles Basso, Sr., 237 Bond street; and Mrs. Frank Saratore, 2200 North Fifth street; two sisters, Mrs. Sadie Davis and Mrs. Jennie Nicholson, both of Grand Rapids, and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be conducted Satruday at 2 p.m. from the Pifer funeral home with the Rev. L. George Beacock of the First Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home until time of the services.
