Mrs. Kate D. Sosebee, 78, of 115 S. State St., died at 10 p.m., Monday in Pawating Hospital, where she had been a patient since Sept. 26.

Mrs. Sosebee was born March 4, 1889, in Three Oaks. She was married there to Thomas Roy Sosebee Nov. 6, 1920, and came to Niles from Three Oaks 52 years ago. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. LeRoy Felhauer, Niles; a son, Roy Jr., Bath; a twin brother, Henry Dalenburg, Niles; two sisters, Mrs. Lina Thompson, White Pigeon, and Mrs. Bertha Gauss, Niles; and five grandchildren.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m., Thursday in her church. The Rev. Kenneth G. Carey, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Pifer Funeral Home after 7 p.m., Wednesday.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

 

Stratton, Thomas M.

Thomas M. Stratton, 63, of 554 N. Clark St., was dead on arrival at Pawating Hospital, Sunday at 7:45 p.m.

An employe of Bendix Corp Mr. Stratton was born Dec. 17, 1903, in Michigan City, Ind. He moved here from there in 1922.

On Nov. 23, 1923, he was married to Mildred M. Carpenter in St. Joseph.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard Syson and a son, Kenneth, both of Niles; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph Coffinger of Niles and Mrs. Lloyd Bielski of Michigan City, and a brother, James of Berrien Center.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m., in the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home with the Rev. Lloyd M. Schloop of the First Methodist Church officiating.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

 

Strong, Leo C.

Leo C. Strong, 75, of 904 Sycamore St., died Monday at 11:15 a.m.., in Pawating Hospital, following a four-year illness.

A retiree of French Paper Company and a life-time resident of this area, Mr. Strong was born March 22, 1892, in Niles. On April 29, 1916, he married Julia M. Kelly in St. Joseph, who survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Bailey of South Bend; and a brother, Veryl Strong of Niles.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m., in the Halbritter-Swem Funeral Home wit the Rev. Leonard. F. Putnam officiating.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Trockenbrod, Henriette

Mrs. Henriette Trockenbrod, 91, of 925 N. 5th St., died Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., in the Berrien General Hospital, Berrien Center, following a six-month illness.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. , in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. Arlan E. Schlundt of St. John United Church of Christ of which she was a member officiating.

Living here all of her life, she was born here June 28, 1876. Her husband, August, died March 19, 1963.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Trockenbrod was an honorary member of her church.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

 

Veach, Gary V.

Funeral services for Gary V. Veach, 40, of 1229 E. Main St., Niles, are Monday at 11 a.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Niles, by the Rev. R. Paul Doherty, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Dowagiac.

Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Veach died Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Pawating Hospital in Niles, following a brief illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1949, in Dowagiac. Veach had lived in Niles since 1971, coming here from Dowagiac.

On Oct. 7, 1970, in Niles, he married Teresa S. Frizzell, who survives.

Veach was a National Guard veteran of the Vietnam era. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 26, Sons of Legion.

He was an employee of Gordon Food Services.

Other survivors include two sons, Jon Veach and Michael Veach, both at home; and a daughter, Trisha Veach, at home; a brother, Thomas Veach of Sebring, Fla.; a sister Jacqueline Anstiss of Berrien Springs; and his mother, Janet Veach of Dowagiac.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4  and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Niles FOP or Niles Babe Ruth.

 

 

Watkins, Charlie

Funeral services for Charlie Watkins, 74, 782 Beebee Road, Niles, are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist church in Niles.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Watkins died at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Pawating Hospital, Niles, following a brief illness.

Born Dec. 15, 1915, in Rolling Fork, Miss., he had lived in the area since 1988, coming here from Perris, Calif.

He worked as a mechanic.

Survivors include four daughters, Lillie Slaughter of Niles, Willie Bacon of Flint, Nanette Watkins of Niles and Victoria Watkins of South Bend, Ind.; four children; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son on Feb. 23, 1962.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the services on Wednesday.

Hoven Funeral Home of Buchanan is in charge of arrangements.

Milford R. Williams, 56, of 2141 Lewis drive, died Friday, Dec. 8, in Berrien General Hospital, Berrien Center.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 11, in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. Burdette L. Faulk, officiating.

Burial was in Silverbrook Cemetery.

His survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Joan Replogle of Buchanan; and Mrs. Carol Collier of Alexandria, Va.; two sons, Darrell of Berrien Springs; and Robert of United States Army, Germany; 16 grandchildren; and four brothers, LaVerne, David and Harold, all of Niles; Charles of Buchanan; two sisters, Mrs. Donna Cinquemani of Downey, Calif.; and Mrs. Naoma McQuaid of Niles.

Born here, Sept. 18, 1911, he was a lifetime member of this area.
