Christena Douglas, Resident of Niles 30 Years, Stricken

Mrs. Christena Jane Douglas, 79, died Tuesday afternoon at 2 in the hospital in Berrien Center. Her home was at 116 Emmons street.

Mrs. Douglas was born Feb. 21, 1862, in Steuben county, Ind., and came to Niles from Chicago in 1911. She was married Oct. 11, 1883, in Bainbridge to Delorum Douglas.

She is survived by a son, Albion Douglas, Elkhart, Ind.; a brother, George Bowerman, Niles, and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Morehouse and Mrs. Katie Todd, Chicago.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger funeral home where services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2. The Rev. Palmer, Elkhart, will officiate and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Christena Jane Douglas, who died Tuesday afternoon, were conducted this afternoon at 2 in the Price and Kiger funeral chapel. The Rev. F.A. Palmer, Elkhart, officiated. At the services and burial was in Silverbrook cemetery. Relatives of the deceased served as pallbearers. Mrs. Douglas' home was at 116 Emmons street.

CLYDE E. EVERETT DIES AT PITTSBURGH SUNDAY
Michigan Central Engineer in Niles for Nine Years is Claimed by Death

Clyde E. Everett, 211 Broadway, a Michigan Central engineer in Niles for nine years, died on Sunday morning at 11 o'clock in Pittsburg, Pa., where he had been since June 26. His death followed an illness from complications, of more than a year. In May, 1928, his ill health prevented him from further engaging in work. Mrs. Everett's sister, Mrs. Louis McKinney of Pittsburgh, planned to leave that city with the body this afternoon. According to word received by the widow. The funeral plans will not be made until the sister arrives in Niles with the body.

Today marks the fortieth anniversary of Mrs.[sic] Everett's birth, having been born in Toledo, O., on Oct. 7, 1889. On Sept 23, 1909 he was married to Barbara Machalleck, of Michigan City, in that city. She survives him as do two sons, Irvin, 18, and Virgil, 14, both at home; also his mother, Mrs. Ida M. Everett, of Pittsburgh, and one brother, Blaine, and one sister, Mrs. Louis McKinney, all of Pittsburgh.

The family moved to Niles from Michigan City 10 years ago.

Mrs. Everett is a sister of Joseph Machallek, 28 S. Fifth street.

News in Brief: BRINGING BODY TO NILES

Irvin Everett and Joseph Machalleck left last evening for Pittsburgh, Penn., to bring the Niles the body of Clyde E. Everett, 211 Broadway, who died in Pittsburgh on Sunday. When word was received late yesterday afternoon that Mr. Everett's sister who planned to came to Niles with the body was unable to do so, Irvin, son of the deceased and Mr. Machalleck, a brother of Mrs. Everett and representing the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers left for Pittsburgh. The funeral arrangements will not be completed until a message is received from Pittsburgh this afternoon.

News in Brief; FUNERAL CLYDE EVERETT

Clyde Everett will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the home, 211 Broadway. The Rev. G.W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery. Mr. Everett died on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Penn. The body was brought to Niles early in this morning by Mr. Everett's son, Irwin, and Mrs. Everett's brother, Joseph Machelleck. Relatives of Mr. Everett left Pittsburgh yesterday for Niles and are motoring here. Friends may view the body at the home.

JAMES E. HARDER, 85, FORMER ALDERMAN, SUPERVISOR IS DEAD
Prominent Niles and Cass County Civil War Veteran Passes Away

James E. Harder, 85, died last evening at 8:30 in Toledo, Ohio, where he had been since last May after having spent last winter in Pawating hospital.

Mr. Harder, a veteran of the civil war and a resident of Niles for many years, had an eventful and interesting life. Born in Kinderhook, N.Y., on Nov. 20, 1844 he spent his boyhood days there or until his father, William N. Harder moved to Michigan in 1858 and settled upon a farm of 200 acres about three miles east of Niles in Howard township. This farm he cleared and improved and occupied until his death in 1865. When the civil war broke out James E. Harder, the youngest of the family was lift in sole charge of the farm when his two brothers enlisted with the 12th and 17th Michigan regiment respectively at the end of three years of service, one re-enlisted and the other returned to the farm to permit his brother, James to join the colors. Mr. Harder enlisted in Company C., 15th Michigan infantry as a private with which he served until mustered out after the cessation of hostilities at Little Rock, Ark., in August 1865. The regiment was attached to Sherman's army but entering the service during the later part of the war did not see much duty on the active field of battle.

Mr. Harder's education was started in the public schools of New York and was continued in Michigan, and he completed a course in Kalamazoo college. He taught in the public schools in Cass county for several years. Later he came to Niles and engaged in conduct of merchantile enterprizes, handling agricultural implements, coal, wood and other commodities under the firm name of Harder and Haynes. About seven years later he went on the road as a traveling salesman, representing a carriage and buggy house.

Mr. Harder served the city of Niles as a member of the Berrien county board of supervisors and as a member of the city council. Until his health failed he was active in the work of the Presbyterian church, and was dean of session having been an elder for more than 50 years.

MRS. ALICE BONINE DIES AT HOME OF HER SON
Widow of Isaac A. Bonine Passes Away Sunday at Cassopolis

Mrs. Alice Bonine, widow of Isaac A. Bonine, who had made her home for several years with her son, Dr. James Gordon Bonine, in Cassopolis, died on Sunday evening.

Alice Amanda Wilkinson, daughter of Louis and Ruth Clark Wilkinson, was born in Chestnut Level, Penn., on Dec. 31, 1849. her parents moved to Michigan when she was five years old. They resided first in Berrien Springs and then came to Niles where she attended school. She was married to Mr. Bonine on Oct. 7, 1872. He preceded her in death in 1922. To this union was born on son, James Gordon Bonine, who with four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, survives her.

The funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Methodist Episcopal church in Niles on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The Rev. W.W. Slee, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL MRS. BONINE

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Bonine, widow of Isaac Bonine were held this morning in the chapel of the Methodist church with the pastor the Rev. W.W. Slee officiating. Burial was made in the family lot. Mrs. Bonine died on Sunday evening at the home of her son, Dr. Gordon Bonine in Cassopolis at the age of 80 years.

Melville V. Barron, 73, died at his home in Dowagiac last evening. He was born in Niles, a son of W.S. and Margaret (Westervelt) Barron and lived in Niles until 1888. He is survived by a widow, one son, W.S. Barron of Niles and one daughter, Mrs. MH. Harrison of Chicago; also by four grand children and three great grandchildren. Private services will be conducted at the home, 208 Indiana Ave., Dowagiac, by the Rev. W. Keith Chidester at 2 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Silver Brook cemetery, Niles.

Mrs. Ray Chappell Stricken Tuesday; Rites Friday at 2

Mrs. Kathryn K. Chappell, lifelong resident of Niles, died Tuesday afternoon at 1:50 in her home at 25 North Fourth street. She had been seriously ill of heart trouble for four months.

She was born in Niles, daughter of John and Margaret Leinhart Krauss and was married Oct. 20, 1907, in the home of her parents by the Rev. C.E. Marvin to Ray E. Chappell, her only survivor. A brother, Eddie, Died when a small child.

Mrs. Chappell was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Niles Garden club and a charter member of the Niles Musical club.

Friends may call at the home until Friday morning when the body will be taken to the Rutherford funeral home for services at 2 Friday afternoon. The Rev. Guy W. Simon will officiate and burial will be in Silverbrook abbey, Silverbrook cemetery.

Chappell Funeral Services Set for 2 o'Clock Friday

Funeral services for Mrs. Kathryn K. Chappell, wife of Ray E. Chappell, Niles jeweler, will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 in the Rutherford funeral home with the Rev. Guy W. Simon officiating.

Mrs. Chappell was a life resident of Niles and died Tuesday afternoon in her home at 25 North Fourth street after an illness of five months. Friends may call at the home until Friday morning.

Pallbearers will be Jack Young, H.O. Parker, N.P. Beebe, Floyd J. Wood, Charles E. White and J. Walter Wood. Burial will be in Silverbrook abbey, Silverbrook cemetery.
