Marilyn Cook Marshall, 88, of Niles, died peacefully at her longtime home Saturday, April 28, 2012.
She was born Oct. 4, 1923 in Flint, Mich., to Donaven R. and Joyce M. (Slocum) Cook. She graduated from the Flint community schools, and attended the former Michigan State College (now University) in East Lansing.
Marilyn’s parents raised her to have a deep interest in her community, leading to a long career with the Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels Inc., first as the office manager for 25 years, retiring in 1999, and then as a volunteer. She was also a long-time volunteer with the Pawating Hospital Auxiliary, often assisting families in the surgical waiting room. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Niles, and its Altar Guild.
On Nov. 25, 1943, in Flint she married James Marshall, with whom she celebrated the 68th anniversary of their wedding last year. Jim preceded Marilyn in death by 107 days, on Jan. 12, 2012. They were also preceded in death by a son, James Donaven Marshall, on Nov. 8, 2006, and by Marilyn’s sister, Nancy Phillips.
Surviving family includes a daughter, Leslie (Ivan) Marshall Lawton of Annapolis, Md.; and a son, Robert (Phyllis) Marshall, also of Annapolis; grandchildren, Colin (Fan) Pitts, Ian (Christina) Pitts, Daniel Marshall, Stuart Marshall and Matthew Marshall; and great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kyden Pitts.
The family of Marilyn Marshall will be gathering privately. Interment will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles. Contributions in memory of Marilyn may be made to Niles-Buchanan Meals on Wheels or to the Pawating Hospital Auxiliary. Arrangements were made at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.
