Mrs. Margaret McLean, 38, of 1012 Edwards street, died at 8 p.m. Sunday at Pawating hospital, after a lengthy illness.

Surviving are: her husband, Archie; her children, by a former marriage, James Miller, of Mishawaka, Mrs. Robert Johnson, of Niles, Clifford Louis, Sandra May, and William Matthew Miller; and their children, David and Margaret Diane McLean, all at home.

Also surviving are her brother, James Darnell, of Alaska; two half sisters, Mrs. Harry Skinner, of South Bend,and Mrs. Manfred Gibson, of Brookston, Ind., and a half-brother Claude Reynolds, of Monticello, Ind.

Mrs. McLean was born in Chilmers, Ind., on Aug. 22, 1912, and came here from Mishawaka about eight years ago.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, Presbyterian pastor. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

 

 

Winquist, Edith

Mrs. Edith Winquist, 66, 120 South Fifth street, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday in Pawating hospital. She had been ill for a year.

Mrs. Winquist was born in Logansport, Ind., March 26, 1884, and moved to Niles in 1923. Her husband, Paul, died about a year ago. She was a member of the First Methodist chirch[sic] of Niles, the GAR, and Best Friends club.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Claude Huff and Mrs. Carlton Geary, both of Niles; six grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Marie Patten, of Niles.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home where funeral services will be held at 2  p.m. Monday. The Rev. L. George Beacock will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

CIRCLE SERVICE SET

Theodore Metzger circle 49, GAR, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Pifer funeral home to hold memorial services for Mrs. Edith Winquist.  Also all members of the circle are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:45 p.m Monday to attend the funeral service.

The Methodist Berean class will meet in a body at the Pifer funeral [home] Monday at 1:45 p.m. to attend the service for Mrs. Edith Winquist at 2 p.m.

Matthew Stoll, 89, three times mayor of Niles, died at 8:10 a.m. today at his home at 312 North Fourth street after an illness of three years.

Born Oct. 12, 1861 at Ann Arbor, he was the son of David and Flora Weidman Stoll. He was married in 1888 in Grand Rapids to Harriet Leitelt, who died Dec. 9, 1931.

Stoll, a retired furniture manufacturer, came here from Buchanan 56 years ago. He was elected mayor here in 1905 after being alderman of the fourth ward and was re-elected in 1906 and 1908. Stoll was a member of the Knights of Pythias.

Surviving are a son, Arthur F., [illegible] Martha Snaubel, of Ann Arbor. Another son, Charles, died in 1943.

The Rev. T. M. Greenhoe will conduct funeral services at the Kiger funeral home at 2 p.m.  Monday.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hattie Morris, formerly of South Lincoln avenue, died at 12:30 a.m. Monday in Berrien County hospital in Berrien Center. She had been ill for several years.

Mrs. Morris was born Jan. 12, 1863, in Aurora, O., and lived here since 1875.

The Rev. G.A. Steeby will conduct funeral services at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Kiger funeral home. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

MRS. MARTHA E. RILEY

 

Mrs. Martha E. Riley passed away at 3:30 o'clock this morning at her residence, 301 North Fourth street.

Mrs. Riley was the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Laban Harter and was born on a farm near Niles Nov. 10, 1848.

She was married on Jan. 1, 1873 to the late John G. Riley, formerly master mechanic of the Michigan Central railroad at Chicago, and was a resident of that city until four years ago, when she moved to Niles.

She is survived by her only daughter, Mrs. G.F. Cecil.

The funeral services will be held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment at Silver Brook cemetery.

MRS. CHARLES HILLMAN HAS PASSED AWAY

Lived But a Few Hours After Returning From Ann Arbor

 

Mrs. Charles Hillman passed away at 10:58 Saturday evening at her home, 306 St. Joseph avenue.  The illness of Mrs. Hillman was of such short duration that its fatal termination was a shock to the family and friends. Of the later but a few realized the seriousness of her condition.  Six weeks ago Mrs. Hillman became ill, but until she went to the hospital at Ann Arbor Monday morning she had been able to be about her home. She was accompanied to Ann Arbor by her husband, her mother and brother, Edwin. The physicians at the hospital declared the case hopeless after an exploratory examination and did not operate. Mrs. Hillman was brought home at 1 o'clock on Saturday and removed to her home in West Niles. She was conscious until the last. Her illness was due to a complication of diseases.

Mrs. Ameria[sic] Augustine Hillman was born in Niles May 23, 1871. In 1895 on the anniversary of her birth she married Charles Hillman, who survives her. She has been a livelong resident of Niles.

Besides her husband and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Augustine, Sr., Mrs. Hillman is survived by one sister, Mrs. Earl Hurtz of Mexico, Mo., and by two brothers, Louis and Edwin Augustine, of Niles.

Mrs. Hillman's estimable qualities have made for her a host of friends in her native city and all with whom she came in contact were impressed with the sincerity of her character. She was an ambitious woman and yet always found time to prove the gracious friend and kind neighbor. She will be sadly missed in the home circle and among her friends.

The funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. Huntington of  Trinity Episcopal church will officiate. Interment will occur at Silver Brook cemetery.

Mrs. Hillman was a member of the Victress hive, Ladies of the Modern Maccabess.

MRS. CHARLES HILLMAN REMOVED BY DEATH

 

Mrs. Chas. Hillman died Saturday night at 10:28 o'clock at the home  306 St. Joseph avenue. One week ago an operation was decided upon and at Ann Arbor the case was pronounced hopeless, when she was brought home. The deceased was born in Niles on May 28, 1871, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Augustine. She was married on her birthday, in 1895. Mrs. Hillman had hosts of friends, all of whom will regret her sudden taking away.  She had led an industrious and useful life. She was a member of Victress Hive, No. 498, Ladies of the Maccabees.

Besides the husband and parents, one sister and two brothers survive, as follows: Mrs. Earl Hurst of Mexico, Mo.; Louis and Edwin Augustine of this city. Mrs. Hurst arrived in the city two weeks ago.

Funeral services will occur from the house Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock., to be conducted by Rev. Geo. Huntington of Trinity church.  Interment at Silver Brook cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Chas. Hillman were held this afternoon from the late residence in St. Joseph avenue. The house was full, Victress hive attending the services in a body to show their respect and love for their deceased sister. Rev. George Huntington performed the last sad rites and the body was laid to rest in Silver Brook cemetery.

 

Rickard, Ida

BERRIEN CENTER, Oct. 31--Mrs. Ida Rickard, who made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mable Huffman, at Berrien Center, died at 10 a.m. today in the Clear Lake Rest Haven. She had been ill since Sept. 6 of this year.

Also surviving are her sons, Walter, of Chicago, and William, who resides in Florida; 13 grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie White, of Union City, N.J.

Mrs. Rickard was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Jan. 1, 1860, and came here in 1918.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. G.A. Steeby, pastor of the First Evangelical United Brethren church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
