Edwin C. Bidwell, 89, 251 Cass St., Niles, former Broadway performer and vaudevillian, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday at Pawating Hospital.

He was born June 27, 189 in Connecticut and lived in Niles since 1962. Bidwell appeared in three Broadway shows: The Vagabond King, Treasure Girl and Funny Face with Fred Astaire. He spent five years touring the United States and Canada in a male quartet and was on the vaudeville circuit for one year in an octet. He was also a member of the Chicago Opera Company.

A retired furniture salesman, he was a Navy veteran of World War I and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Executive Board of Retail Clerks Local 291 in Chicago and was its first vice president and treasurer, the Eleventh Church of Christ in Chicago, the secretarial staff of the Chicago Y.M.C.A. and the First Church of Christ Scientist in Niles.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services.  Memorials may be made to the Tribute Fund of the Christian Science Church.

 

Cain, Michael Dean Jr.

Michael Dean Cain Jr., the son of Michael D. and Susan M. Huber Cain of 62664 Diamond View Drive, Cassopolis, was delivered still-born Sunday at 1:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Medical Center in South Bend, Ind.

His family gathered for services at the graveside in Silverbrook Cemetery this morning at 10 a.m. with Pastor Scott Goodman of First Baptist Church, Niles.

Survivors, in addition to his mother and father, include two sisters, Nichole Frederick and Jamie Frederick, at home; a brother, Bill Frederick, at home; a sister, Jennifer Bohlen of Nebraska; and his grandmother, Elizabeth Huber of Cassopolis.

Arrangements were handled by Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

Memorial contributions many be made to First Baptist Church, Niles.

 

Carr, Cleveland Franklin

Cleveland Franklin Carr, 93, of 1333 Wells St.,Niles, died Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at the River Ridge Manor.

He was born Dec. 15, 1892, in Bradyville, Tenn., and had lived in Niles since 1929. He married Beulah Tucker June 28, 1913, who preceded him in death Oct. 11, 1968. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Niles and a former employee of Kawneer Co. Inc. in Niles.

Survivors include a son, Glenn Carr of South Bend, Ind.; two daughters, Lyda Mathews of Niles and Clarabelle Johnson of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services are Friday at 11 a.m. at the Hoven Funeral Home. Rev. W.J. Rittamel will officiate.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Friday to the time of the service.

 

DeMott, Florence L.

Florence L. DeMott, 102, 1217 State Line Rd., Niles, died Tuesday at Oak Grove Manor.

She was born March 8, 1884, in Niles Township and was a lifetime area resident. A friend of Ring Lardner and the owner of one of the first televisions in Niles, she was the retired owner of the Niles Taxi Company.

Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home, Rev. Arnold Schaap will officiate. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be given to the Children's Division of the Niles Community Library.

 

English, Dorothy May

Dorothy May English, 53, 941 Clay St., Niles, died Tuesday at her home.

She was born April 25, 1933 in Niles and was a 20-year employee of Simplicity Pattern Co. She also was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

She married Edward H. English April 17, 1954 in Berrien Springs. He survives.

Other survivors include her mother, Blanche (Dee) Rude; a son, Brian C. English of South Bend, Ind., and three sisters, Cay Sisk, Jane Smith and Nellie Gentry, all of Niles.

Services are Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home. Rev. Lloyd Phillips, of the Wesley United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

Memorials may be made to the Berrien County Cancer Service or the Memorial Hospital Oncology Department.

Funeral services for Terry Evans, 31, of Poplar St., Niles, are Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Niles, by Pastor Nate Bradford.

Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Evans died Sunday at 7:10 p.m. at Lakeland Medical Center, Berrien Center, of natural causes.

He was born June 2, 1966, in Berrien Center, and was a lifetime resident of the area.

Evans worked as a security guard and was a member of the New Covenant Baptist Church of South Bend, Ind.

Survivors include his parents, Willie and Menthia Lee Jackson of Niles; and four brothers, Larry Evans and Robert Evans, both of Niles, Troy Evans of Columbus, Ohio, and Timothy Evans of Riverdale, Ga.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Covenant Baptist Church, 1819 Prairie Ave., South Bend, Ind.

Hoven Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

 

 

Francies, Ira Russell

Ira Russell Francies, 78, 900 Mobile Blvd., Lot 72, Niles, died at 9:38 a.m. Wednsday at St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend, Ind.

He was a self-employed painting contractor and a retired executive director of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America Inc. He also was active for 38 years as an adult leader in Boy Scouts and was a member of the Mother Church of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston and the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Niles.

Born Dec. 1, 1907 in White Plans, N.Y., he lived in Yonkers, N.Y., moving to Niles 11 year ago.

On Jan. 6, 1945 in Norfolk, Va., he married Alyce M. Ryan, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Peter Francies of Oxford; a daughter, Ellen Francies of Niles; a sister, Muriel Margitich of Holly Hill, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home with Aleta Styers, a Christian Science reader with the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Niles, officiating. Burial is at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
