Hill, Eugene Willard

Eugene Willard Hill, 6, of 2714 West street, died at 10:30 a.m. today at Pawating Hospital after being ill one day with spinal meningitis, according to hospital authorities.

Surviving are his parents, Mr.and Mrs. Albert Hill; his grandmothers, Mrs. Frances Wechnerowski, of Niles, and Mrs. Olive Hill, of Keeler; one brother, Dale, at home, and three sisters, Patricia and Norma, at home, and Mrs. James Weaver, of Niles.

He was born on March 6, 1947, in Niles, and had lived here all his life. He would have entered second grade at Bell School this fall.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, starting Friday morning, and services will be held there at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. R.M. Greenhoe, Presbyterian pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

 

 

Horner, Margaret R.

Funeral services for  Margaret R. Horner, 88, of 1010 Almaugus Drive, Niles, will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, by the Rev. Al Bastin.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Horner passed away at 4:40 a.m. on Sunday at Lakeland Medical Center, Niles, following a brief illness.

She was born on Jan. 3, 1912 in Niles, to Herman Schrumpf and Myrtle Bowman. Mrs. Horner was a life-time resident of Niles.

On Feb. 8, 1930, she married John E. Horner in South Bend, Ind., who passed away on March 14, 1965.

Horner is survived by her three daughters, Evelyn Bailey, Dorothy Hinegardner, Betty Kuhn, all of Niles; son, John H. Horner of Niles; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; sister, Wanita Knauf of Niles.

Horner was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ or Berrien County Cancer Service.

 

 

 

Hudson, Addison W.

A.W. HUDSON DIES THURSDAY

 

Addison W. Hudson, 85, of 409 North Fourth street, one of Niles' most prominent citizens and outstanding in civic activities, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday in Pawating Hospital following an illness of two years.

Hudson, who served as superintendent of the National Printing and Engraving Company here from 1914 until the time of his retirement in 1939, was born Oct. 29, 1867, in Port Huron.

He came to Niles from Chicago in 1902. Several years after that he moved to New York City and returned here in 1914. During his lifetime he was active in all civic affairs. He was a charter member of the Niles Rotary Club and served as president of the Niles Board of Education for a number of years. He also was a member of the board for several years.

He was honored with a lifetime membership in the Masonic Lodge and after his retirement was associated with the First National Bank here until about three years ago.

When he came to Niles he married Isabel Fisher in 1907. She survives as do a daughter, Mrs. V.E. Peterson, 1910 Bond street, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home.

 

 

Lauridsen, Arnold C.

Arnold C. Lauridsen, 66, of 1121 North Seventh street, died Saturday night at Pawating Hospital after an illness of two weeks.

Lauridsen was born in Manistee on Aug. 13, 1886. He lived in Niles since 1927, coming here from Grayling. A carpenter, Lauridsen was employed at Niles High School.   His wife, Florence, died in 1943.

The dead man was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen and St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church.

Surviving are one son, Arnold Jr., of Niles; one daughter, Mrs. Marian Walter of Niles; five grandchildren; a brother, Arthur, of Muskegon Heights; and two sisters, Mrs. R.E. McCurdy of Manistee and Mrs. Sidney Bodine of Bay City.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Herbert Meussling officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Powell, Chester

Chester Powell,  Niles, died at 6:55 p.m. Saturday at Kalamazoo, where he had been ill for three years.

Surviving are his wife, Alta, Niles; one son, William Powell, of Kalamazoo; a daughter, Mrs. Elden Simpson, of Barrington, Ill., and one sister, Mrs. J.A. Hamilton, Baltimore, Md.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1877, in Jefferston County, O., and came here from Bristol, Ind., in 1919.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. L.George Beacock will officiate, and the Elks will have charge of the committal service at Silverbrook Cemetery.

 

Pulver, Edward Arthur

Edward Arthur Pulver, 74, of rural route two, died yesterday at 3:30 p.m. at his home, where he had been in poor health for seven years.

He is survived by his wife, Anna, whom he married Sept. 12, 1931, in Mishawaka, Ind. Born in New York City, Sept. 28, 1899, he came here from Kansas City, Mo., 17 years ago. He was a veteran of World War I.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted Monday at 2 pm. by the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe.  Military rites will be conducted at Silverbrook cemetery, where burial will be.

 

Quimby, Alice Howland

Miss Alice Howland Quimby, 70, of 621 East Main street, died this morning at 12:10 am. in Pawating hospital, where she had been ill since May 5.

Born Feb. 7, 1877, she came here from . . .[illegible] . .years ago and has made her home here since. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are three cousins, George Dougan, of Berien Springs, and Mrs. Ollie Blackmond and Mrs. Fred Fox, both of Dowagaic.

Friends may call at the Kiger funeral home where the Rev. T.M. Greenhoe will conduct services on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
