Duane E. Benson, a faithful servant of God, died peacefully at 1:05 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, with family gathered at Hanson Hospice Center following an extended illness.
He was born on Aug. 6, 1945, in Charlotte, Michigan to Clynis Albin and Edythe Esma (Ballard) Benson. He was graduated from Charlotte High School, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Spring Arbor (Michigan) College (now University), and continued his education at Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan and Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo).
He began his teaching career at Concord (Michigan) Community Schools before coming to Niles Community Schools where he taught — mostly in the science classrooms at Ballard and Ring Lardner Junior High Schools — for 32 years.

Duane was a member of the Mapleview Free Methodist Church in Niles for 47 years. At Mapleview he taught Sunday School, was an adult leader for the teen program, sang in the praise team, and was a member of the Board of Trustees.
He also served on the boards of Somerset (Michigan) Beach Campground of the Free Methodist Church, and the Michigan Science Olympiad.
At Ring Lardner he sponsored the Science Olympiad Club, coached the football and volleyball teams, and advised the model building club and the rocketry club. He could also be found in his home shop building models, and woodworking.
His life was focused on serving God by caring for everyone in his life. Family members, friends, students and many others benefited from a variety of caring gifts that Duane offered. He also participated in mission trips in Michigan, Kentucky, Brazil, and Nigeria. In every endeavor – teaching, cabinetmaking, or studying God’s Creation — Duane strove for the greatest level of excellence, to give glory to God.
On Sept. 9, 1967, in Pontiac, Michigan he married the former Elizabeth L. Morris with whom he celebrated two weeks ago the 49th anniversary of their wedding.
Surviving family includes his wife, Liz Benson and their children, Curtis (Gwen) Kenney-Benson of Lockport, Illinois, Michael Benson of Lakeview, Oregon, and Jean Ziesmer of Largo, Florida; grandchildren Spencer Kenney-Benson, Duncan Kenney-Benson, and Jillian Ziesmer; and Duane’s siblings, Karl Benson of Danville, Kentucky, Neil Benson of Red Wing, Minnesota, Cheri (Milton) Green of Burgaw, North Carolina, Lora (Steve) Dunham of Lone Tree, Iowa, and Tina Benson of Lexington, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Duane Benson will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at the Mapleview Free Methodist Church, 1837 Niles-Buchanan Road, Niles with the Rev. Greg Rensberry of the church officiating. Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Contributions in memory of Duane may be made to the Mapleview Free Methodist Church for youth camp scholarships.

James Willard Harpole, 68, of Niles, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at his home.

He was born Sept. 17, 1947, to Myrtle and John Harpole in Niles. On Nov. 30, 1968, James married Vera Walls at a ceremony in Niles. James enjoyed fishing and hunting. After 34 years at French Paper, James retired.

James is survived by his wife of 47 years, Vera; daughters, Kari Jones, Tara (Spencer) Miller; brothers, Doyle (Debbie) Harpole, Ralph (Cheryl) Harpole; sister, Teresa (Ron) Earl; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle and John; brothers, Oliver, Gary, and Ronnie Harpole.

Funeral services for James will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, at Hoven Funeral Home. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan. Online condolences may be made at www.hovenfunerals.com.

MRS. BROWN WILL BE BURIED HERE

Sister of Montgomery Ward Dies in Detroit; Rites Set Wednesday

 

The youngest sister of the late Montgomery Ward will be buried in Niles Wednesday afternoon in the family lot beside her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Ward, in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mrs. Carrie Ward brown, 74, who died Monday in Harper hospital, Detroit, was born in Niles and lived here until about 10 years ago when she went to Detroit to live with her daughter, Mrs. V.H. Kendall. The daughter and one sister, Mrs. N.A. Hass, Phoenix, Ariz., are the only surviving relatives.

Mrs. Brown's last visit to Niles was about five years ago when she spent a month or more here at the time of her sister, Mrs. Cora Hammond's serious illness and death.

Lewis F. Brown, her husband, died about 18 years ago. After that she lived for about six years in her home on North State street, moving afterward to Detroit.

The body will arrive in Niles Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 (EST) on the Michigan Central.  It will be taken from there to Silverbrook cemetery where the Rev. Harry L. Nicholson will read the committal service.

Accompanying Mrs. Kendall and the family to Niles Wednesday will be Mrs. Willard French, Detroit; and Mrs. Kendall's cousin, Wayne Brown, Mt. Clemens.

Funeral Service For Ward Binns Set Saturday

 

Funeral services for Ward Dixon Binns, who died in Albuquerque, N. M., Tuesday afternoon, will be held in the Price and Kiger funeral home Saturday afternoon at  [illegible].  The body will arrive in Niles by train Saturday.

The Rev. Harry L. Nicholson, rector of the Trinity Episcopal church, will conduct the services and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

The news of Mr. Binns death came as a shock to his family.  Shortly befofre his death he had been reported as greatly imporved at the Veterans' hospital in Albuquerque where he was under treatment.

Mr. Binns as born in Niles April 22, 1896. He leaves his wife, Florence and four children, Dale, Paul, Suzanne and Virginia, 16 South State street.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.R.  Binns, live at 606 South Fifth street.  A brother, Vernon, White Plains, N.Y.,and a half-brother, Clifton, Camden, also survive.

He was employed as an artist by the National Print and Engraving company for 14 years prior to his illness two years ago.

Niles News in Brief:  BINNS SERVICE SATURDAY

Funeral services for Ward D. Binns were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Price and Kiger funeral home, the Rev. Harry L. Nicholson officiating.  Pallbearers were Harry Lydick, Garnett Jones, Leroy Warren, Albert Whie, George Keach and Alfred Phister.  Among the relatives and friends from out-of-town who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Binns, White Plains, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. C. Binns and daughter, Camden, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Geary and Mrs. Charles McMurtrie, Dansville, N.Y., beside several from Detroit, Holland and South Bend.  Mrs. Geary will remain for a visit in the home of Mrs. Florence Binns.

MRS. RAY GOODLING DIES IN ALABAMA

Daughter of Late Roy Wilcox Dies of Pneumonia in Southern City

 

Mrs. Ray Goodling, 29, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wilcox, died about 9 o'clock this morning at her home in Birmingham, Ala. She had been ill of pneumonia since last Saturday.

Mrs. Goodling was the former Elna Wilcox. Before her marriage 12 years ago, she had been employed at the Bell Telephone company office. She lived most of her life in Niles until two years ago when she and her family moved to Birmingham, where Mr. Goodling has been engaged in architectural work.

The message announcing Mrs. Goodling's death came this morning to Mr. Goodling's mother, Mrs. Norman Goodling, 714 South Fifteenth street.

Mrs. Goodling's father, Roy Wilcox, died nearly a year ago. She leaves her husband and three daughters, aged 11, nine and four; also three brothers, Wesley, of Niles, who is en route to  Birmingham in response to a telegram received Wednesday announcing his sister's grave condition; Clare, Fremont, Mich., and Wesley, South Bend.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.  Relatives here, however, believe the body will be brought to Niles for funeral services and burial.

Niles News In Brief:  GOODLING FUNERAL MONDAY

The body of Mrs. Elna Wilcox Goodling, who died Thursday morning in Birmingham, Ala., arrived in Niles at 12:26 this afternoon. Ray Goodling, her husband arrived here this morning , accompanied by his three children, Donna Jean, Shirley and Sally Ann.  L.J. Wilcox, Mrs. Goodling' s brother, has also returned.  The services will be held in the Rutherford mortuary Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. A.R. Kuehn, pastor of the First Evangelical church, officiating.  Friends of the family are asked to call at the mortuary at any time before the hour of the service.

MARCUS MARKS DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Employe of French Paper co. Succumbs; Funeral at 3 Friday P.M.

 

Marcus Marks, 50, died in a Kalamazoo hospital Tuesday night at 6 o'clock, after an illness extending over the last four months, of complications developing after a nervous breakdown.

Mr. Marks was born in Wabash county, Ind., Aug. 7, 1885, and came here 12 years ago from Buchanan. He was employed at the Kawneer for the first few years of this residence in Nile, afterward at the French Paper company where he worked in the beater room.

He was married March 10, 1917, to Miss Minnie Applegate at Muncie, Ind., who survives him. He leaves a son, Marcus Burnell Marks, at home, and three brothers, George, Buchanan, and Harry and Raymond, Niles.  He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Thomas Marks.

The body was brought to the Rutherford mortuary whee services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock, William Putnam, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Niles News In Brief:  McCLARY RITES TUESDAY

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah C. McClary, 86, who died in Nichols hospital Battle Creek, will be conducted in the Price and Kiger funeral home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  William Putnam will officiate and burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery. Mrs. McClary was born in Queen City, Mo., Dec. 22, 1850. She leaves three sons, William and Cleveland McClary, Niles and a daughter, Mrs. Della Hare, Battle Creek, with whom she had been spending the winter.
