Peggy Ann Patterson, 59, of Niles, died at 1:23 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Lakeland Community Hospital in Niles, unexpectedly but of natural causes.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1953, in Niles to Donald Eugene and Betty June (Schanbacher) Harrold.  She graduated from Niles High School and lived here all of her life.  She was employed at Simplicity Pattern Company in Niles for more than 30 years.

Peggy was an avid bowler, participating in area leagues. She was the first female bowler with a perfect 300 score in Niles.  She also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling to the Patterson family reunions in Arkansas.

She was first married to Jeff Mantke.  Then, on May 25, 2005, she married Jimmie B. Patterson, who survives.  Also surviving are her father, Donald Harrold of Niles; step-children, Daniel Patterson, of California, and Rebecca Patterson, of Elkhart, Ind.; and grandchildren, Matthew Blake Thompson and Joshua Allen Thompson.

The funeral service for Peggy Patterson will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.  Committal will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 6  until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Contributions in memory of Peggy may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bobo, Ethel

Ethel "Cubie" Bobo, 95, of South Third Street, Niles, died at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9 at Silverbrook Manor, in Niles, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., on Thursday, Feb. 16, at Halbritter Funeral Home, in Niles, with the Rev. Bryant L. Bacon of Mount Calvary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.  A time of visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at the funeral home.

On July 18, 1910, in Memphis, Tenn., she was born to David Chambers and Annie Alexander.

She was very proud of her Native American heritage. Previously, she had been employed at the former Bookout Furniture Store, in Niles. Mount Calvary Baptist Church included her in its congregational activities.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Ralph Bobo, who died in May of 1971.

She is survived by a circle of caregivers, fellow residents and her church family.

Memorial contributions, in her memory, may be made to Mount Calvary Baptist Church, in Niles.

Arrangements were by Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

 

Bruce, Raymond Earl

Raymond Earl Bruce, 68, 2358 US-12, was pronounced dead on arrival at Pawating Hosital[sic] at 5:45 a.m. today. Death was attributed to natural causes.

Mr. Bruce was born Jan. 8, 1895 in Benton Harbor. He came to Niles from that city when he was five years of age. He married Lena Stayer Oct. 26, 1921 in Edwardsburg. She survives.

Other survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Bernice Demuth,Mrs. Esther Cox, Mrs. Beatrice Byrne and Mrs. Betty Larsen, all of Niles, Mrs. Marjorie Bertold, Battle Creek, and Mrs. Bertha Hannon, Miami, Fla; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Hollenbeck, Niles; and 18 grandchildren.

He was a member of the Rosewarne Bible Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kiger Funeral Home. The Rev. Allen Robbins, pastor of this church, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

 

Cameron, Ethel R. (Higgins)

BERRIEN SPRINGS--Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel R. Cameron, 69, 542 N. Main St., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church, Niles. The Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

She died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday in Pawating Hospital, Niles, where she had been a patient eight days. She had bee ill about six months.

Mrs. Cameron was born Feb. 13, 1894 in Columbus, Kan. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Chester Krause, Berrien Springs; a brother, Floyd B. Higgins, Niles, and three grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the McLauchlin Funeral Home here after  2 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Clark, James L. Jr.

James L. Clark Jr., 45, 1413 Sheffield Ave., died at 4:10 p.m. Friday in the Berrien County Hospital. He had been ill five months.

Mr. Clark, stores manager at National-Standard co., and a retired Chief Petty Officer with the U.S. Navy, was born here July 15, 1917.

Survivors include his widow, Betty L.; his father, James L. Clark Sr., Niles; a son, James L. III, at home; and two brothers, Robert W., Wanatah, Ind., and Lee E., Niles.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Kiger Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Fraser, pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, (Evangelical and Reformed), will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are being received at the funeral home.

 

Clark, Verda G. Overcash (Shoemaker)

Buchanan--Mrs. Verda G. Clark, 81, of Akron, Ind., formerly of Buchanan, died at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in her home. She had been ill only a short time.

Mrs. Clark was born in Kosciusko County, Ind., on Feb. 7, 1882. She moved to Akron from Buchanan nine months ago.

Survivors include two step-sons, Verl Clark, Buchanan, and Kenneth Clark, Berrien Springs; a step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Hamilton, Buchanan; four brothers, Arthur Shoemaker, Akron, Fred Shoemaker, Lincoln, Neb., Floyd Shoemaker, Wabash, Ind., and Don Shoemaker, Leesburg, Ind.; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Sellers, Rochester, Ind.

She was a member of the Buchanan Grange.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the Hupert Funeral Home, Akron. Committal rites with casket open, will follow at 2 p.m. Friday at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Friends will be received at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Forler, Dora J. (Spansail)

Mrs. Dora J. Forler, 92, of 1518 Oak St., died at 9:15 a.m. today in her home after an illness of two and one-half years.

A native of Illinois, she was born at Genoa on Nov. 29, 1870.  On Jan. 10, 1894, she married George A. Forler in Chicago.  He died in 1947.

Mrs. Forler moved here from Chicago in 1896.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Paul Blackmond, Dowagiac; Miss Gladys and Miss Elizabeth Forler, both at home, and Mrs. William Bartholomew, Waynesburg, Pa.; a brother, Fred Spansail, Niles; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Private funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home here with Mrs. Gerald Brand, Christian Science reader, officiating. Burial in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Thursday evening.
