Niles Savings and Loan Head Dies Suddenly

Fred L. Vandenberg, president of the Niles Federal Savings & Loan Assn., and prominent, local civic and church leader, died about 9 o'clock this morning after apparently suffering a heart attack at his home, 15 South Third Street.

He was rushed to Pawating Hospital by ambulance after being stricken but died before arrival.

Mr. Vandenberg was known throughout the area for his interest in community affairs as well as through his business interest.

Associated with the savings and loan institution since July, 1936, he served as manager of the institution from 1939 to January, 1955, when he was named president in a change of official titles.

Friends may call beginning this evening at the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist church with the Rev. L. George Beacock, church pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Survivors are his widow, the former Mary Plummer, whom he married Sept. 14, 1930, at Muskegon Heights; his mother, Mrs. P.J. Vandenberg, of Niles; two sons, John, of Washington, D.C. and Stephen, at home; a daughter, Mary Jane, at home; one granddaughter; a brother, Marion Vandenberg, of Benton Harbor, and a sister, Miss Margaret Vandenberg, of Niles.

Born Aug. 19, 1907, at Everett, Wash., Mr. Vandenberg came to Niles when he was 11 and was graduated from Niles High School.

He was employed seven years at the old City Bank & Trust Co., of Niles before the depression and served as receiver's assistant two and a half years while the bank re-organization process went on.

Mr. Vandenberg would have (continued on Page 2) completed a five-year term on the Board of Public Works this year. He was first president of the United Fund of Greater Niles which was organized in 1953 and had served on the U.F. Board of Directors. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the . . .[illegible] . . .Methodist Church, he was treasurer for the Board of Trustees and chairman on the church commission on finance.

In his business affiliation, Mr. Vandenberg was the first vice president of the Michigan Savings & Loan league and would have become president of the state organization this year. He was also a member of the legislative committee of the U.S. Savings & Loan League and recently attended a session of that group at Washington, D.C.

TO LIE IN STATE

Friends of Fred L. Vandenberg may call at the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home until noon Saturday when removal will be make to the First Methodist Church. The body will lie in state in the church from noon until the services begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev. L. George Beacock officiating. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.
