DEATH CLAIMS MRS. SCHRUMPF

Survived Her Sister's Death Less Than a Week--Neighborhood in Sorrow

Surviving her sister, Mrs. Herman Grahl less than a week, Mrs. Herman Scrumpf died this morning at her home on Phoenix street at 5:45 o'clock, the same hour at which her sister's death occurred last Monday morning. Mrs. Schrumpf became ill two weeks ago with peritonitis and her condition had since been alarming with little hope of recovery.  She was not informed of the death of her sister on account of her own serious condition.

Mrs. Schrumpf was 34 years of age. She was born in Pipestone township, Berrien county, but had resided in Niles for a number of years and had many friends here who deplore the loss of the young wife and mother.  Besides her husband, she is survived by two children, who are Margaret, aged 7 years, and Waunita, age 2 years; by her parents, Mr.and Mrs. H.B. Bowerman, of Niles, and one sister, Miss Vivian Bowerman, of  Niles, and by three brothers, Fred Bowerman of Chicago, Lyle and Ray Bowerman of Niles.  Deep sympathy is felt throughout the community for the relatives of the two sisters, whose deaths have left eight little children motherless and made the family circle desolate.

The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence by Rev. W.H. Camfield. Interment will occur at Silver Brook cemetery.

Neighborhood Stricken

The neighborhood in which Mesdames Grahl and Schrumpf resided has been sadly stricken within the past few months.  Since last October nine deaths have occurred in homes on Phoenix street, a street which is about two blocks in length and 16 little children have lost a parent, 12 having been left motherless and four without a father.  Those whom death has claimed in the neighborhood since October were Mrs. Jesse HIll and son, Mrs. Harold Davis and two children, Mr. Bothwell, Orzel Davis, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Davis, Mrs. Grahl and Mrs. Schrumpf.
