Linda Landon, 86, Dies in Lansing; Service Thursday

Burial rites will be conducted in Silverbrook cemetery Thursday afternoon a 1 for Mrs. Linda E. Landon, 86, native of Niles, who died Tuesday in Lansing. She was former Michigan State college librarian.

Mrs. Landon was born here May 9, 1856, daughter of the late Justice and Jane Carr Vought.  She was graduated from Niles high school and taught two years in Kalamazoo.  Her marriage to the late R.W. Landon, a real estate dealer, was solemnized in 1877.  Mr. Landon died in 1886.

Librarian at Michigan State college from 1891 until her retirement in 1932, Mrs. Landon was popular with students and received the unusual campus tribute of an honorary membership in the Men's Union literary society.

She is survived by one son, Rufus, of Detroit. Another son, Lee, preceded her in death. The body will be brought to Niles after services in the Estes-Leadley funeral home in Lansing Thursday morning at 9.

Hazel Lavon Larson

Hazel Lavon Larson, 71, Niles, died Sunday at 11:35 a.m. at Silverbrook Manor where she had been a resident.

Born Jan. 23, 1916 in Lima, Ohio, the former homemaker was a lifelong Niles area resident. She was married Aug. 28, 1937 in Buchanan to Walter Larson, who died in 1984.

Surviving relatives include: Two sons, Roger, Niles and Duane, Bridman; six sisters, Nellie Prince, Iva Aldridge and Betty Krassow, all of Niles; Goldie Stickovich, Mishawaka, Ind.; Bernice Cherryholmes, Charlotte, M.C.; and Crystal Rossow, Kokomo, Ind.; two brothers, Elwood Hemphill, Niles and Harry Hemphill, South Bend, Ind.; and two grandchildren.

Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home, Niles, the Rev. Russell Ross, First Church of Christ Christian officiating.  Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mildred R. Leidy
Oct. 27, 1902-Feb. 19, 1954

Mrs. Mildred R. Leidy, 112 1/2 East Main street, died at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Pawating Hospital.  She had been ill since December of 1953.

Surviving are her husband, George F. Leidy, of Niles; four sons, Fred, Richard, Lawrence and George, all of Niles, and six grandchildren.

Mrs. Leidy was born on Oct. 27, 1902, in Chicago, and came here from Chicago 30 years ago.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with the Rev. L.George Beacock, Methodist pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Mary Low

MRS. MARY LOW STRICKEN AT 80

Mrs. Mary Low, 80, of 241 North State street, a resident of Niles since 1885, died at 8:45 Friday night in the Berrien County Hospital after a year's illness.

She was born in Cassopolis Oct. 15, 1861, and lived there until she was married to Edward M. Ribble and moved to Niles. Her marriage to Calvin E. Low, who survives, was solemnized in 1926.

Mrs. Law was long active in Niles church and club circles. She became a member of the Methodist church 40 years ago and was active in the Women's Adult Bible class and in the former Ladies' Aid and Missionary societies. She also was a member of the Shakespeare club of the Progressive League.

Funeral Monday

Surviving with Mr. Low are two daughters, Mrs. Frank Hoese, Niles, and Mrs. R.R. McDonald, Chicago; three stepsons, Willis, Herbert and Francis Low, all of Niles; three stepdaughters, Mrs. J.N. Abair, Niles; Mrs. George Masterman, state line, and Mrs. Scottt Woodcock, Argos, Ind.; two brothers, Wilbur Pollock, Cassopolis, and C.N. Pollock, South Bend; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Pifer funeral home where the service will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Ernest Leland Maas
Sept. 18, 1888-Jan. 29, 1959

Ernest Leland Mass, 70, of 1122 Cass Street, resident of this community for the past 50 years, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Pawating Hospital where he had been admitted Wednesday. He had been ill for the past week.

Mr. Maas, a retired employe of the Michigan Department of Revenue, was born Sept. 18, 1888, in South Bend. He was a member of the Niles Elks Lodge and was treasurer of the Clear Lake Property Owners Association, Buchanan.

Surviving are: his widow, Gertrude; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Dickey, of Jackson, and a granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Pifer Funeral Home with John Kinner, pastor of the First Church of Christ, officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Correction

Ernest Leland Maas, 70, of 1122 Cass street, resident of this community for the past 50 years and a retired employe of the Michigan Department of Revenue, died Thursday night in Pawating Hospital. It was erroneously stated in a previous announcement of the death that he deceased's last name was Mass.

Helen A. Mangold

Funeral services for Helen A. Mangold, 88, of 700 Platt St., Niles, are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Niles.

Burial wll follow at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Mrs. Mangold died Friday at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Pawating Hospital, Niles, following an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 10, 1901, in Chicago. Mrs. Mangold lived in Niles since 1949, coming from Three Oaks.

On Jan. 21, 1921, in Three Oaks, she married Elmon Albert Mangold, who preceded her in death on April 5, 1968.

Survivors include seven sons, Elmon Mangold of Atlanta, Norman Mangold of Vancouver, Wash., Melvin Mangold of Baldwin, Dale Mangold of Niles, Donald Mangold of Baldwin, Jack Mangold of Bridgman and Larry Mangold of Hart; one daughter, Thelma Heimel of Niles; a brother, Elmer Ziebarth of Three Oaks, 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home.
