Earl Styers, 80, of 1915 Champlain Drive, Niles, died at 12:05 a.m. Friday, December 25 at Pawating Hospital following a brief illness.

He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge 45 F. & A.M. of South Bend, Ind. He was former president of Bendix Local 9 and retired from Bendix.

He was born Nov. 15, 1907, in Graves County, Ky. He lived in the area since 1932, coming from Detroit.

On March 30, 1930 in Niles, he married Aleta O. Ostrander; she survives.

Also surviving are: Aleta A. Styers of Weehawken, N.J.; a son, Stephen of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; a sister, Rema Jarvis of Symeonia, Ky.; two brothers, James of Paducah, Ky. and Jeff of Ledbetter, Ky.; and three grandchildren.

Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29 at the Halbritter Funeral Home. A Masonic service will be conducted by St. Joseph Lodge 45 F. & A.M. Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Halbritter Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Niles Community Library.

 

Williams, Peter

Peter Williams, 72, of 709 Maple Street, died at 9:55 a.m. Friday in the Berrien County Hospital where he had been a patient for the past three days. He  had been in failing health for five years.

Mr. Williams, a retired farmer, was born Jan. 19, 1887, in New Carlisle, Ind., and had lived most of his life in this community. His wife, Ethel, preceded him in death in 1931.

Surviving are: two sons, Ivan Williams, of Niles, and Melvin P. Smith, of South Bend; two daughters, Mrs. Fred Cox, of Niles, and Mrs. James Coatsworth, of Garden City; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Devo Smith, of South Bend, and four brothers, Fred Williams of New Troy, Frank Williams of New Troy, Frank Williams of Niles, and Otis and Lawrence Williams, both of Galien.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

 

Williams, Sarah

Mrs. Sarah Williams, 85, of 1906 California Street, Elkhart, Ind., former Niles resident, died at 4:50 p.m. Thursday in Elkhart General Hospital following an illness of four days.

Mrs. Williams, a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, was born April 6, 1873, and came to Niles in 1914 from Marion, Ind. She moved to Elkhart to make her home in 1956.

Surviving are: her husband, Darius; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Johnson, of Elkhart, and Mrs. Iva Lanahan, in Nebraska; four sons, Russell, Wayne and Verlin M. Williams, all of Niles, and L.C. Williams, of Inglewoood, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Grace Johnson, of Sweetser, Ind.; 20 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in the Kiger-Halbritter Funeral Home wtih Elder L.C. Caviness officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home.

 

Eisele, Harold Arthur

Harold Arthur Eisele, 86, 108 S. Barrett St., Niles, died at 12:50 p.m. Monday at Pawating Hospital following a four-week illness.

He was born June 30, 1901 in Bertrand Township.

Surviving are: three sisters, Edna Gillen and Oralee Northrop of Niles and Ruby Finn of Salem, Oregon; and a brother, Howard Eisele of Niles.

Services are Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Niles where he was a member. Rev. John T. Charter of the church will officiate.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Pifer-Smith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Niles Lions Club's program for the blind.

 

Elder, Lawrence P.

Lawrence P. Elder, 88, of 1327 Oak Street, a member of the Niles Police Department for 26 years prior to his retirement in 1948, died at 1:45 p.m. Sunday in Pawating Hospital where he he had been admitted as a patient Friday. He had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Elder was born Aug. 17, 1870, in Warsaw, Ind., and came to Niles from there in 1900. He was a life member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. His wife preceded in death in 1948.

He was a veteran life member of Buchanan Odd Fellows Lodge No. 75 and a long-time member of the New Century Rebekah Lodge No. 351 of Niles.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Parsons, of Niles, and Mrs. Percy Garl, of Edwardsburg, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Trinity Episcopal Church with the rector, the Rev. John G. Carlton, officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home beginning Tuesday evening.

 

Estabrook, Garnet Florence

Services for Garnet Florence Estabrook, 87, of Medco Center, 1950 Ridgedale Road, South Bend, Ind., are Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

She died Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Medco Center in South Bend, Ind. following a long illness.

Mrs. Estabrook was affiliated with the Jehovah's Witness Church and a member of the Royal Neighbors.

She was born Dec. 6, 1902 in Michigan City, Ind.

On Oct. 11, 1924, she married Floyd Estabrook in Chicago who preceded her in death May 8, 1956.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty J. Tarqueno of Tinley Park, Ill. and Ilene F. White, of Mishawaka, Ind.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

 

Evans, Edith

Mrs. Edith Evans, 78, of 334 South Fourth Street, died at 4 p.m. Monday in her home following an extended period of failing health.

Mrs. Evans was born June 16, 1880, in Downing Town, Ind., and came to Niles from LaFayette, Ind., in 1929. Her husband, Albert, preceded her in death a number of years ago. Surviving are: a son, John Evans, of Niles; a daughter, Mrs. Jean Carroll, of Phoenix, Ariz., and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
