Cleao M. Vaughn
June 17, 1917-July 25, 1983


Cleao M. Vaughn, 66, 251 Cass, died sometime Monday, after a brief illness.

She was a member of the Daughters of America-Royal Neighbors.

Born July 17, 1917, in Watervliet, she lived here since 1942, coming from Coloma.  On oct. 20, 1934, in South Bend, she married Emerson Vaughn, who died July 23, 1970.

Surviving are a son, James E. . .[illegible]. .a sister, Mrs. Charlene McCloed of Naples, Fla.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home with Rev. Arnold O. Schaap of Edwardsburg, officiating.  Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Halbritter Funeral Home.

NILES--Mrs. Ida L. Vaughn, 45, 1866 Lewis Dr., was dead on arrival at 6:47 a.m. today at Pawating Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Halbritter Funeral Home.

NILES--Funeral Services for Ida L. Vaughn, 45, of 1866 Lewis Dr., who was dead on arrival at 6:47 a.m. Thursday at Pawating Hospital, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Halbritter Funeral Home.

Officiating will be the Rev. John Wyngarden of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends are calling at the funeral home.

Born June 16, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Vaughn had lived here since 1952, coming from Florida.  On May 11, 1952, in West Palm Beach, Fla., she married Robert E. Vaughn, who survives.

She was a waitress at the B and L restaurant and a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Cub scout den mother.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Cpl. Robert D. with the Marines in North Carolina and John, at home; a daughter, Sharon, at home, and her parents, Dan F. Carter of Clearwater, Fla., and Mrs. Edith Carter of South Bend.

 

Vaughn, Cole Erwin

Funeral services for Cole Edwin Vaughn, 17 days, of 1925 M-51,, Niles will be Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. at Pifer-Smith Funeral Home in Niles.  Pastor Jeffery Whittaker will be officiating.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Vaughn died of natural causes during the early morning hours of Saturday, March 23 at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind.

Vaughn was born March 6, 2002 in Niles to Misty Lintz and Michael Vaughn.

Survivors include his parents, Misty Lintz and Michael Vaughn of Niles; his maternal grandparents, Lori Arend of Buchanan and Charles Lintz, Jr. of Niles; his paternal grandparents, Mike and Kim Vaughn of Niles; is great-grandparents, Ronald and Linda Backus of Buchanan, Orville Thomas of Niles, Doris Fetterhoff of Buchanan, Jim and Joyce Vaughn of Niles, Marion Geoffeney and Jim and Geneva Lintz of Niles; his great-great-grandmother, Hazel Pointer of Niles; one aunt, Kelli Vaughn of Niles; and one uncle, Cody Thomas-Lintz of Buchanan.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care unit.

Vaughn, Homer Charles

Funeral services for Homer C. Vaughn, 79, of 414 Remus Drive, Buchanan will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, by the Rev. Tom Fox.

Burial will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Vaughn passed away at 4:40 p.m. on Monday at V.A. Medical Center, Grand Rapids, following an extended illness.  He was born on April 27, 1921 in Wolverine to Millard Vaughn and Fannie Adkins. Mr. Vaughn has lived in Niles and Buchanan most of his life.

On Oct. 1, 1960, he married Nancy Williams, who passed away on Aug. 27, 1999.

Vaughn is also preceded in death by his sisters, Gladys E. Linter, who passed away on March 14, 1991 and Dorothy Beadle, who passed away on Aug. 24, 1988; brother, Emerson, Vaughn, who passed away on July 23, 1970.  He is survived by his three sons, David Krugh of Dowagiac, Gregory Vaughn of Huntertown, Ind., Roger Little of Dowagiac; two daughters, Lanna Snyder of Mishawaka, Ind., Lorraine "Rainy" Payne of Cary, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister Beulah Kroll of Edwardsburg.

Mr. Vaughn is a graduate of Niles High School, a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army; a member of the Buchanan Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fishing in area lakes. He was retired from the Bendix Corporation.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Nancy Jane Vaughn, 76, of 414 Remus Drive, Buchanan, are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Buchanan, by the Rev. William P. Sanders, Pastor.

Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Vaughn died Friday at 11P03 a.m. at 24681 Morton, Dowagiac, following a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Niles, and was a lifetime resident. On Oct. 1, 1960, she was married to Homer Charles Vaughn, who survives.

Vaughn was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Buchanan, the Clark Professional Women's Association, and Ram Love in Buchanan. She was a member of the Better Homes and Gardens Club and received the 1997 award for the best garden in Buchanan. She was very active in ladies church activities, including funeral luncheons and bazaars.

Vaughn was a wonderful mother and grandmother, her family said.

She retired in 1988 after 32 years at Clark Equipment.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Kenneth Roger Little and David Krugh of Dowagiac and Gregory Vaughn of Huntertown, Ind.; two daughters, Lanna Glass-Snyder of Mishawaka, Ind., and Rainy Payne of Cary, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Clark of Berrien Springs; and a brother, Gene Meyer of Garden City, Kan.

Friends may call Monday for 5 to 8 p.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Mary H. Herrick, 87, of 2246 Fair Oaks West, Niles, died at 6:55 a.m. Saturday in the Cardinal Nursing Home, South Bend after an extended illness.

Born on Apirl 5, 1895 in Enid, Oklahoma, she lived in Niles since 1935. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the What-So-Ever-class of the church, the White Shrine, Life member of Eastern Star, Lady Elks, Pawating Hospital Auxiliary and Four Flags Auxiliary WWI, Barracks 1093.

On June 15 1917 she married Melvin B. Herrick who preceeded her in death in 1954.

She is survived by two sons, William Herrick, Baton Rouge La. and Jack Herrick, LeSueur, Minn.; three daughters, Mrs. Clara Wienke, Niles, Mrs. Neva Hargreaves, South Bend, Ind., and Mrs. Jane Glascott, Arlington Heights, Ill.; one brother, Earl Hadley, Hotchkiss, Colo.  Also surviving are two step-sisters, Mrs. Lillian Cleveland, Phoenix, Ariz. and Mrs. Luella Olson, Longmont, Colo. along with 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William J. Fuerstenau officiating.

Burial will take place at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Local arrangements are being handled by Halbritter Funeral Home and there will be no visitation.

Memorials  may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Sortore, Katherine

Katherine Sortore

Katherine Sortore, 99, of 224 S. 4th St. Niles, died Aug. 23, at 6 p.m.  at State Line Medical Care Facility after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1883 in Niles, she was a lifetime resident of the area. She was married to Wilkinson A. Sortore, who preceeded her in death on June 23, 1958. She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.

A graveside committal will be held at Silverbrook Cemetery on Friday, at 10 a.m. with Rev. William Fuerstenau of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. There will be no visitation, but funeral arrangements and service are being conducted by Pifer-Smith Funeral Home.
