Mayer, Dorothy F.

Dorothy F. Mayer
July 10, 1911-July 3, 1994

Dorothy F. Mayer, 82, of 1440 S. 13th St.,  Niles, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday July 3. 1994, in Pawating Hospital, after an illness. Mrs. Mayer was a former employee of Bendix/AlliedSignal and had been an elementary school teacher for 11 years in the Galien School system in the 1930s. She was born on July 10, 1911, in Galien. On Oct. 21, 1967, in Niles, she married Reuben Walter Mayer. He survives, with a daughter, Madelyn Y. Pease of Baldwin, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Wilma Zebell of Baldwin. Mrs. Mayer was a member of Fulkerson Park Baptist Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in Halbritter Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Maxwell, Herbert E. Jr.

Herbert E. Maxwell Jr.
June 19, 1938-April 17, 1997

Herbert E. Maxwell Jr., 58, of Country Club Drive, Niles, died Thursday April 17, 1997,  in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born June 19, 1938.  Survivors include his wife, Mary L. (Weimer); and a sister, Karen Oghalai of Stoughton, Wis. Graveside services were held in Silverbrook Cemetery. Halbritter Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Mattiford, Walter

Walter Roy Mattiford, 62, of 1887 Baldwin Drive, , Niles, died at 7:28 p.m. Friday July 2, 1932, in Pawating Hospital after an illness. Mr. Mattiford retired from Bender & Louden after six years and was employed by Tucker Freight for 25 years. He was born July 2, 1932, in Niles and was a lifetime area resident. On May 12, 1962, in Niles, he married Beverly A. Franzen. She survives with two sons, Jeffrey and David, both of Niles; three grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn Nave of Niles; and a brother, Frank of Niles. He was a member of Niles Eagles Lodge, Teamster's Local 364, South Bend; Teamster's Local 7, Kalamazoo; and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Halbritter Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Michigan Heart Association or the church.

 

Matthews, Jennifer Lynn

Jennifer Lynn Matthews
March 26, 1976-August 20, 1999


Funeral services for  Jennifer "Jenny" Lynn  Matthews will be Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Pifer-SMITH Funeral Home, Niles, at 11 a.m.

Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Matthews died Friday, Aug. 20 at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, Ind. following an automobile accident.

She was born March 26, 1976 in Niles, Michigan. She was a student at IUSB where she was majoring in photography.  Matthews was a 1998 graduate of Southwestern Michigan College with a degree in graphic design.

She worked as a bank teller at Bank One, South Bend.

Surviving are parents Daryl A. "Butch" and Susan M. (Gromski) Matthew of Edwardsburg, and maternal grandparents Walter and Mildred Gromski  of South Bend.

Visitation is this evening from 5-8 at Pifer-SMITH Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the family for the establishment of a scholarship fund in her memory.

Jennifer Lynn ''Jenny'' Matthews, 23, of 27824 Pine Lake St., Edwardsburg, Mich., died on Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., of injuries from a car accident. She was born March 26, 1976.

She was a student at Indiana University at South Bend, majoring in Photography. She graduated in 1998 from Southwestern Michigan College with an Associates Degree in Graphic Design, and worked as a bank teller at Bank One in South Bend.

She is survived by her parents, Susan M. (Gromski) and Daryl A. ''Butch'' Matthews of Edwardsburg; and by her maternal grandparents, Mildred and Walter Gromski of South Bend.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Pifer-Smith Funeral Home, 521 E. Main St., Niles, Mich., where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family for the establishment of a scholarship fund in Jennifer's memory.

Mather, Jean (Moneysmith)

Jean Mather
Abt. 1921-April 17, 2007

Jean Mather, 86, died of natural causes at 4:28 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Niles and was a lifetime area resident. She was an examiner, and had retired from the Simplicity Pattern Co. after 17 years of service.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2094. She liked to go to Bingo with her friend, Darlene, loved shopping at Wal-Mart, enjoyed her family and grandchildren, and loved to watch the Gameshow Network and Gunsmoke.

On January 28, 1942, in St. Joseph, MI, she married Jake Mather, who preceded her in death in on January 11, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William and Louise Moneysmith; and by three brothers, Paul, Robert and Richard Moneysmith.

Survivors include sons, Phillip (Rose) Mather, Charles (Angie) Mather, Jeffrey (Robin) Mather and Kevin (Lori) Mather, all of Niles; daughters, Jeannette Frazier of Paw Paw, MI, Jennifer Goldsburg of Vandalia and Penny (Jared) Baker of Niles; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today, April 20, in Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, where friends may call one hour before services. Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice at Home, Inc.

Floyd Masten Dies; Native of Berrien, Plaster Contractor

Floyd Masten, 45, widely known, Niles plastering contractor, died suddenly at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at his home, 530 East Main Street. He had been in ill health for the last few weeks.

The Rev. Guy W. Simon of the First Presbyterian church will conduct funeral services at 2 o’clock (EST) Thursday afternoon in the Turner and Pifer Funeral Home. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Berrien County. Mr. Masten was born near Niles, Nov. 13, 1892. At the time of his death he was actively engaged in the plastering business.

He leaves his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. William Walker, Bourbon, Ind.; his wife, Merle and three sons, Baxter, Camden and Duane, all of Niles, also two grandchildren.

Masten, Fay Hope

Fay Hope Masten, three month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George (Edith Trimble) Masten, died at 11:30 Sunday (April 2, 1942) night in her home at Biteley. She had been ill since her birth March 25, 1942, at Biteley.Besides her parents she leaves five sisters, Virginia, Gladys, Mary Lou, Joan and Donna Yvonne; and a brother, George Jr., all at home. Friends may call Tuesday at the Pifer funeral home, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. J. Kenneth Hoffmaster. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery
