Frank P. Carpenter
June 21, 1878-January 20, 1951

Frank P. Carpenter, 72, 940 North Fifth Street, died at 2:20 a.m. today in Pawating hospital. He had been ill one year. Carpenter was born in Disko, Ind., on June 21, 1878. He came to Niles from Rochester, Ind., 31 years ago and was a city employee for 25 years.

Surviving are his wife, Cora; daughter, Mrs. Theodore Helt; and a son, Doyle , both of Niles; four brothers, Wilbur, Ray and Earl, all of Niles; and Arthur of Tucson, Ariz., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. The Rev. L. George Beacock will officiate. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Evelyn L. Carpenter

NILES – Mrs. Evelyn L. Carpenter, 59, of 54 N. State St., died at 5:14 p.m. Wednesday in Pawating Hospital, after an illness of two days.

Born June 22, 1911, in Elgin, Ill., Mrs. Carpenter had lived her for 49 years, coming from Elgin. On May 5, 1928 she married Lloyd S. Carpenter who survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Carpenter is survived by two son, Donald of Elkhart and Dennis of Niles; four daughters, Mrs. Ray Frehauf of Portage, Mrs. Larry Barr and Mrs. Robert Mitchell, both of Niles, and Mrs. John Hartman of Edwardsburg; her father, Joseph Price of Whittier, Calif., and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Orin Bailey of Grace United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Effie L. Carpenter

NILES—Mrs. Effie L. Carpenter, 83, of 610 N. Clark St., died at 3:15 p.m.  Tuesday at South Bend Osteopathic Hospital after a two-days illness.

A homemaker, she was born Feb. 24, 1892 in Indiana and had lived here since 1970, coming from Indiana. In 1906 in Wakarusa, Ind., she married Carl F. Carpenter, who died Sept, 23, 1968.

She is survived by five sons, Carl and Clarence, both of Niles, Robert of Edwardsburg, Raymond of Cassopolis and Donald of Bradenton Beach, Fla.; a sixth son, Bion of Edwardsburg, died last week.

She is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arietta Carpenter of Niles, Mrs. Edna Wucker of Cadillac and Mrs. Ruth Reeves of Berry ville, Ark.; 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pifer Chapel of the Swem-Smith  Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Pletcher of Coulter's Chapel of God officiating.  Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Donald E. Carpenter
March 4, 1925-Sept. 5, 2005

Donald E. Carpenter, 80, Wayne Street, Niles, MI, died at 2:55 Monday September 5, 2005 at his home.

He was born March 4, 1925, in Niles to Carl and Effie Bickel Carpenter who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Gail Kendall on January 13, 2002; five brothers, Carl, Raymond, Clarence, Bion and Robert; and sisters, Arietta, Edna, Alma and Ruth.

He served in the Army in 1943 and was a member of the AMVETS in Niles. He loved country music, western movies and was an avid reader of Western novels. He also loved playing the guitar and singing. He was employed in Carpentry and cabinetry for most of his life. He was also employed with the Brandywine school system for several years.

On May 24, 1946 in Niles, he married Charlotte N. Smith who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert W. Carpenter of Niles; daughters, Pamela D. (Frederick) Carpenter of Niles and Sheila Carpenter of Cincinnati, Oho; grandchildren, Christopher J. Carpenter of Niles, Mandi Gail Kendall of Chicago, Martina Marie Marina of Niles, Johnathan Balint of Cincinnati, Ohio, Donald W. Carpenter of Niles, Dawn Miller, South Bend, Ind; five great-grandchildren, Bradley Jon Boller of South Bend, Isaiah Kendall Marina , Elijah Horton, and Brittany Carpenter, all of Niles and Blake Miller of South Bend.

There will be no services or visitation. Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home of Buchanan.

Cora E. Carpenter

Mrs. Cora E. Carpenter, 77, 940 N. 5th St. died at 9:40 p.m. Friday in her home following an illness of two years.

Mrs. Carpenter, a retired employee of the Four Flags Hotel where she had worked for 30 years, was born Aug. 23, 1883 in Akron, Ind., and moved to Niles in 1920 from Rochester, Ind. Her husband, Frank, preceded her in death in 1951.

Surviving are a son, Doyle Carpenter, Smyrna, Del; a daughter, Mrs. Theodore Helt, Niles; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Pifer Funeral Home with the Rev. John P. MacLachlan, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends are being received at the funeral home.

Clarence F. Carpenter
April 5, 1912 – Oct. 9, 1992

DOWAGIAC  - Clarence F. Carpenter, 90, of Uneta Street, died at 1 p.m. Friday in Dowagiac Nursing Home after an illness. Mr. Carpenter was born April 5, 1912 in Niles, and was a lifelong area resident. Surviving are two sisters, Edna Wucker of Cadillac, Mich., and Arretta Vetterly of Niles; and three brothers, Carl E. and Raymond B, both of Niles and Donald E. of Sumnerville, Mich.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m.  Wednesday in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles. There will be no visitation. Hahn-DeVos Funeral Home, Mishawaka, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to any charity.
