NILES—Mrs. Effie L. Carpenter, 83, of 610 N. Clark St., died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at South Bend Osteopathic Hospital after a two-days illness.
A homemaker, she was born Feb. 24, 1892 in Indiana and had lived here since 1970, coming from Indiana. In 1906 in Wakarusa, Ind., she married Carl F. Carpenter, who died Sept, 23, 1968.
She is survived by five sons, Carl and Clarence, both of Niles, Robert of Edwardsburg, Raymond of Cassopolis and Donald of Bradenton Beach, Fla.; a sixth son, Bion of Edwardsburg, died last week.
She is also survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arietta Carpenter of Niles, Mrs. Edna Wucker of Cadillac and Mrs. Ruth Reeves of Berry ville, Ark.; 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pifer Chapel of the Swem-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Ralph Pletcher of Coulter's Chapel of God officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook cemetery.
