MRS. KORMAN'S DEATH SUDDEN
Well Known Lady Lived Only About an Hour After Being
Stricken With Heart Attack; In Usual Health Sunday

The death of Mrs. Henry Korman, Sr., at her home, 1402 North Fifth street, at an early hour this morning, came as a great shock to the members of her family and a host of friends in the city.

Mrs. Korman attended services at St. John's church Sunday and in the afternoon had been at Silverbrook cemetery for the memorial day services and seemed in her usual health. After spending a few hours at the home of her son, Henry, last evening she returned to her own home. She was stricken with a heart attack about midnight and passed away an hour later.

Mrs. Korman was born in Saxony, Germany, June 30 1848. Her maiden name was Eva Meffert. She came to the United State with her parents when quite young, and settled in Pennsylvania, later going to Buchanan. She was married in 1872 to Henry Wurz, who died in 1889. Five children were born of this union. She was again married in Niles to Henry Korman, who survives her. One son was born of this union.

The six children who survive Mrs. Korman are Mrs. Fred Bachman, Mrs. Charles Meyers, Mrs. Rudolph Guideman, Herman Wurz, Henry Wurz and Henry Korman. Three brothers and two sisters also survive. The latter are Mrs. Seigle Stevens, Glendora; Mrs. Ivy Fuller, Chicago; J.M. Meffert, Ocala, Florida, George and Martin Meffert, of Buchanan. Five grandchildren also survive. The children all live in Niles.

Mrs. Korman was a member of St. John's church, of the Ladies' Circle of Mutual Help of the church and of Niles hive, No. 39, L.O.T.M. She was highly esteemed in the community in which she has resided for about 40 years, and a splendid mother and wife, and highly esteemed lady has been called to her eternal rest.

The funeral arrangements have not been made pending word from relatives.

DIED AFTER ILLNESS OF HALF HOUR

At one o'clock this morning, after an illness of only half an hour, Mrs. Henry C. Korman died at her home 1430 north Fifth street, after being stricken with heart trouble. Mrs. Korman was in her customary good health up to a late hour last night and as usual Sunday morning attended divine service at St. John's church, of which she was long a faithful and conscientious member.

For over forty years Mrs. Korman had been a resident of Niles and the news of her sudden demise came as a shock to a host of friends, who knew her well. Deceased was a lovable lady, one of the most hospitable kind and one who good cheer and counsel will be sorely missed. She was an ardent church member all her life and also belonged t the L.O.T.M. Of this city.

Born in Saxony, Germany, June 30, 1848, Mrs. Korman came to America when she was a young girl. And most of her life resided in Berrien county. She was twice married and in June 1872 in this city she married Henry Wurz, who died in Buchanan in September, 1889. Unto this union, five children were born. Later she was wedded to Henry C. Korman of this city and one son, Henry Korman, came to grace the home.

Deceased whose maiden name was Eva Meffert, is survived, besides her husband, by the following children: Mrs. C.F. Bachman, Mrs. Charles Meyers, Mrs. Rudolph Geideman, Herman and Harry Wurz and Henry Korman, all of Niles. Three brothers and two sisters also survive, George and Martin Meffert, Buchanan, and J.M Meffert of Calif. Mrs. Seigle Stevens, Glendora, and Mrs. Ivy Fuller, Chicago. There are five grandchildren.

The funeral arrangements have not been completed.

FRIENDS PAY LAST RESPECT

With the simple but most impressive service the funeral of Mrs. Henry Korman, whose sudden death Monday shocked the city, was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence, 1430 N. Fifth street.

Rev. Rahn, pastor of St. John's German church officiated, where Mrs. Korman was one of the most faithful worshippers. The rooms were filled with friends of the family, and beautiful flowers in baskets and large bouquets surrounded the casket.

Among those present from out of the city were Henry Korman, Madras, Mo.; Miss Lena Hendricks and Chas. Korman, Kansas; Mrs. Augusta Breitenfield and Mrs. Ivy Fuller, Chicago; Clarence Pfiel, Manistee, Mich.; Mr. and Mrs. S. Stevens, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Blackmun and Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hartline, Glendora; Mrs. Nelson George Meffert, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Meffert, Earl Beck, Mrs. Howard Roe, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Blodgett, Buchanan; Mrs. L.E. Granger, Hartford, and Ed Geideman of Michigan City.

DEATH TAKES HENRY KORMAN
Well Known Pioneer Resident Passes Away Peacefully After Lingering Illness

Henry Korman, well known and respected pioneer resident of Niles passed peacefully away about 12 o'clock last Saturday nigh after a lingering illness with heart disease, aged 76 years.

Mr. Korman was born in Germany and had been a resident of Niles and vicinity for half a century. For many years he followed agricultural pursuits. For about five years he served as a member of the police department, having received his first appointment at the hands of ex-Mayer J.E. French.

Mr. Korman's wife passed away about two years ago. He leaves six children, Hermann Korman, Henry and Harry Wurz, Mrs. Fred Bachman, Mrs. Charles Myers and Mrs. Rudolf Guideman.

Fraternally Mr. Korman was identified with the German Workingmen's association and the Maccabees.

The funeral services will be conducted at the home of Harry Wurz, 1430 North Fifth street, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. P.G. Saffran officiating. Interment will take place at Silver Brook cemetery.

HENRY KORMAN DIED LAST MIDNIGHT

By the death of Henry Korman, one of the oldest and best known resident has been taken from the community. Mr. Korman passed away Sunday at midnight after being confined to his bed three days with heart trouble.

Deceased was 76 years of age and had lived in Niles 50 years. He was born in Germany Nov. 10, 1842.

For several years Mr. Korman was a member of the police force and wile working in this capacity he make many lasting friends.

The children who survive are Henry, Herman and Harry. Mrs. Fred Bachman and Mrs. Charles Meyers and Mrs. Rudolph Geideman, all of this city; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Stockhurst, of Missouri; one brother, Bernard Korman, of Kendalville, Kansas. Mr. Korman passed away two years ago in June.

Mr. Korman was a member of the Maccabees and German Working man societies. The funeral will be held from the residence, 1430 north Fifth street, tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Paul Saffran will officiate. Burial at Silver Brook cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel H. Korman, 98, of 911 S. Third St., Niles, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Halbritter Funeral Home by the Nolan R. Williams, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Burial will be at Silverbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Korman died at 1:20 p.m. Thursday at Silverbrook Manor, following an extended illness.

She was born June 10, 1893, in Baldwin, and lived int his area since 1911, coming from Greenville.

Mrs. Korman was a homemaker.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Philathea Class of Church for more than 70 years, and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star.

On Jan. 18, 1912, in Niles, she married Henry C. Korman, who preceded her in death on April 24, 1972.

Survivors include two sons, Henry B. Korman of Huron, Ohio and David R. Korman of South Bend, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Shurter of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Andrews.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday at Halbritter Funeral Home.181

Niles—Henry C. Korman, 80, 0f 1228 Huff St., died at 5:25 p.m., Monday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an illness of several years.

A retired passenger engineer with the Penn Central Railroad, Mr. Korman was born Nov. 15, 1891, in Niles and had lived here all his life. On Jan. 18, 1912, he married the former Ethel H. Kinney, who survives.

Mr. Korman was a life member of the Niles Elks, the Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Additional survivors include two sons, David R. of Niles and Henry B. of Berea, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. George Andrews of Niles; a sister, Mrs. R. J. Geideman of Niles, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will b held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Halbritter Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert M. Trenery of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

GALIEN—Ernest E. Sell, 62, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Pawating Hospital, Niles after an illness of several years.

A retired employe of Clark Equipment Co., Mr. Sell was born Sept. 20, 1909, in Bippus, Ind., and had lived here since 1941, coming from Huntington, Ind. On June 29, 1934, in Huntington, he married the former Pauline M. Heiney, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, Fred L. Sell of Schaumbar, ill.; a daughter , Mrs. James Butcher of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Schilling, of Middletown, Md., and Mrs. T.R. Dill of Galion, Oho, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with the Rev. Robert M. Trenery of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Friends may call beginning Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral services for Pauline “Polly” Marcella Sell, 84, of 301 Pete Ellis, Bloomington, Ind., are Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Halbritter Funeral Home by the Rev. Richard L. Rice of Niles.

Burial will follow in Silverbrook Abbey at Silverbrook Cemetery, Niles.

Sell died Thursday at 9:40 p.m. At Bloomington Convalescent Center., Bloomington, Ind., following a brief illness.

She was born June 7, 1914, in Huntington, Ind., and came to Niles from Huntington in 1941. Sell moved to Bloomington in 1983.

On June 29, 1934 in Huntington, she married Ernest Edward Sell, who preceded her in Death on April 24, 1972.

Sell was a member of the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in Bloomington. She had been a waitress at Franky's Restaurant and Thomas' Drive-in, both in Niles.

Survivors include a son, Frederick Lee Sell of San Antonio, Texas, a daughter, Janne Lynne Butcher of Bloomington; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carol Ann Butcher-Jenks, who died on Jan. 4, 1999; three brothers, Donald Heiney, Emmett Heiney and Wesley Heiney Wilson; and two sisters, Opan Shroyer and Mary Tumbleson.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at Halbritter Funeral Home.

CARRIE WHITE, 72, DIES IN HOWARD

Mrs. Carrie Mae White, 72, a life-long resident of the Howard township community, died this morning at 1:15 in her Route 1 home after a six weeks' illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1869 in Howard township, she was married Nov. 24, 1897, to William O. White, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Max Cameron White, River Bluff; two grandchildren, William and Maxine White; two brothers, George Cameron, Sumnerville, and Frank Cameron, Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Walker, Rock Island, Ill.

Mrs. White was a member of the Pokagon Methodist church and of the Gleaner Lodge.

Friends may call at the Price and Kiger funeral home, where services will be conducted in the chapel at 2 Monday afternoon. Burial will be in the masoleum [sic] at Silverbrook cemetery.
