Ronald D. Chappell, 70, of 1348 Hickory Street, died suddenly at his home here Monday at 4:15 p.m.

Chappell was born in Yorkville, Ill., on May 3, 1883, and came here from Buchanan 20 years ago. He was a retired newspaper publisher, and formerly owned and published the Waterman Leader and Hinkley Weekly at Hinkley, Ill.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Christian Science Church. Surviving are his widow, Mollye, and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Gates, of Yorkville, Ill.

Friends may call at the Pifer Funeral Home where services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, with Mrs. Phyllis Castle, of the Christian Science Church, officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

CLIFFORD COLEMAN DIES AT HOME OF HIS SISTER
Kin of Three Niles Families Passes Away After Long Illness

Clifford Rufus Coleman, 62, died on Wednesday afternoon at 2:45 at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mills Bachman, 703 Grant street. Mr. Coleman spent last winter with Mrs. Bachman and went from here to Kalamazoo, where another brother resides. He returned to Niles last Friday on account of continued illness from heart and stomach complication and had steadily grown weaker.

Mr. Coleman was born in Elkhart, Ind., on June 3, 1868, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Coleman. When a young man he engaged in the work of a mill wright in the Elkhart paper mills. On account of ill health he had spent much of the time for several years at Mrs. Bachman's home in Niles. He was one of a family of eight children of whom five survive him. They are Mrs. Bachman, James Coleman and Slater Coleman, of Niles, Joseph Coleman, of Grand Rapids and Fred Coleman of Austin lake, Kalamazoo.

The funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the Troost and Augustine chapel. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery in Niles.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL CLIFFORD COLEMAN

Funeral services for Clifford Coleman will be held this afternoon at 2:30 in the Troost and Augustine chapel. The Rev. G.W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian church will conduct the services. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery. Mr. Coleman who is a former resident of Elkhart was a brother of Slater and Joseph Coleman and Mrs. Mills Bachman, of Niles. He died on Wednesday afternoon at Mrs. Bachman's home. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Coleman of Grand Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Coleman of Kalamazoo were among those from out of the city who attended the services. Joseph and Fred Coleman are also brothers of the deceased.

News in Brief: FUNERAL WILLIAM CURTIS

Funeral services for William J. Curtis will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the home of his sister, Belle Curtis Woods, 516 Cass street. Rev. J.W. Edgehill, pastor of Mt. Olivet A.M.E. Church in South Bend will officiate. Burial will be made in Silver Brook cemetery.

Funeral services for George Allen Dehring, eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry G. Dehring, 1302 Ontario Street, who died at the Northern Indiana Children's Hospital Saturday, were to be held at 4 p.m. today at the Pifer Funeral Home.

The Rev. Theodore Laesch, of St. Paul's Lutheran church, was to officiate, and burial was to be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

MRS. ANNA HESS DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS
Passes Away This Morning at North Eleventh St. Residence

Mrs. Anna Hess, wife of George L. Hess, 1726 N. Eleventh street, died at 11 o'clock this morning after an illness with which she was stricken last December.

Mrs. Hess was born in Germany on Dec. 25, 1885. She came to Niles with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Wedel when she was a small child. She was married to Mr. Hess on Sept. 26, 1906. He survives her as does one son, Laverne Hess of Niles, her mother, Mrs. Amelia Wedel of Niles, a baby granddaughter, Dolores Irene Hess, and one brother, Carl F. Wedel, all of Niles.

Mrs. Hess was a member of St. John's Evangelical church, a member of the Ladies Aid society and of Niles Hive, No. 30 of the Maccabees.

The funeral plans are not completed.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL MRS. HESS

Funeral services for Mrs. George Hess, 1726 N. Eleventh street, were held on Sunday afternoon with the Rev. G.W. Webbink, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church in charge. Burial was made in Silver Brook cemetery. Among those from out of the city who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. William Snorr, of South Bend, the latter a sister of Mr. Hess.

MRS. JOSEPHINE HESS DIES AT PHOENIX HOME
Widow of John Adam Hess Passes Away Today at Age of 72 Years

Mrs. Josephine Barbara Hess, 72, widow of John Adam Hess, died at 12:55 this morning at her home 1336 Phoenix street after having been ill since last Tuesday. Mrs. Hess had been a resident of Niles for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Hess was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on November 9, 1857. Her maiden name was Josephine Barbara Treves. She was married to Mr. Hess in St. Joseph and they continued to reside there for several years after their marriage before coming to Niles and locating on a farm on the west side of the St. Joseph river near the north city limits of Niles. Of the nine children born to them seven survive their mother. Mr. Hess died 16 years ago.

The surviving children are Miss [line illegible] South Bend, Adolph Hess, Niles, Mrs. Herman Volkhardt, Niles, Carl Hess, Dowagiac, Mrs. Leo Thornton, and Miss Georgia Hess, of Niles. Besides the children Mrs. Hess is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Ringle, of St. Joseph, Mo., and by 12 grandchildren.

The body will be taken to the home of Mrs. Volkhart[sic] at 1327 Maple street, at noon tomorrow and friends may call there to view the body. The funeral services will be held in Mrs. Volkhardt's home on Wednesday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. G.W. Webbink, pastor of St. John's Evangelical church will officiate. Burial will be in Silver Brook cemetery.

Niles News in Brief: FUNERAL OF MRS. HESS

Funeral services for Mrs. Josephine Hess were held this afternoon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Volkhardt, 1327 Maple street, Mr. Volkhardt being a daughter of the deceased. The Rev. G.W. Webbink conducted the services. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Leach sang. Burial was made in Silver Brook cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Mitchell, 84 a lifetime resident of Niles, died at 1 a.m. today at her home, 526 Howard Street, following an illness of several years.

Mrs. Mitchell was born on July 7, 1870, in a log cabin on the site of what is now the Morris Farm. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church, of St. john's Church Guild, and of the Community, Michigan State and National Granges.

She was married to Andrew Mitchell on Jan. 28, 1943, in Niles.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred Sumption, Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. Howard Beardslee, of Niles; two step-daughters, Mrs. Cyril Rose, South Bend, and Mrs. Frank Wigent, Milford; three step-sons, Stanley Mitchell, South Bend, Lawrence Mitchell, Niles, and Marion Mitchell, Buchanan; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Also, a sister, Mrs. Elliott Straehty, Burr Oak, and a brother, Charles Nieb, of Niles.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday at St. John's Church with the Rev. Herbert Meussling officiating. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home.
