ISAAC WELLS DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Widely Known Niles Farmer Expires While Driving on M-60 Highway

Stricken with a heart attack while driving west of Niles this morning, Isaac Wells, 66, died suddenly about 10 o'clock.

Mr. Wells, who had lived on a farm west of Niles on M-60 for the last 15 years, was widely known in and near Niles.  He was the father of Mrs. Clarence Gillette, Chicago road, who survives him.

Mr. Wells had started toward Niles with a truck load of apples. Apparently conscious of his condition, he had pulled to he side of the road. A passing motorist noted his condition and summoned Rutherford's ambulance.

Beside his daughter, Mrs. Wells leaves his wife, Mrs. Nellie Wells, and a sister, Mrs. Glen Meade, of Dowagiac.

Arrangements for the funeral services have not been made.

Niles News In Brief:  WELLS RITES TUESDAY

Funeral services for Isaac Wells, who died suddenly Saturday morning, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. Wells' daughter, Mrs. Clarence Gillette, the Rev. James F. Goodman officiating.  Burial was in Silverbrook cemetery.  Pallbearers were Jerome Ease, Mr. Fairchild, James Knox, John Young, Charles Gillette, and I.M. Wells.

Niles News In Brief:  WOOLLET RITES TUESDAY

Funeral services for  Philip Woollet, 79, who ded Sunday in Berrien Center, will b ehld in the Rutherford-Phillips mortuary Tuesday afternoon at 1;30 o'clock. The services will be in charge of the Salvation Army. Mr. Woollet was born in Indiana. He leaves his wife and no other close relatives.  Mrs. Woollet lives in South Bend.

June Margaret Walters, 98, of Niles, died at 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Silverbrook Manor in Niles.

She was born on Jan. 18, 1917, in South Bend, Indiana, to Leslie G. and Maggie L. (Ryan) Fenters. She was graduated from Niles High School, and has lived here all of her life. She was employed for several years in the offices of the former Michigan Wire Goods in Niles.

June was a member of Saint John’s United Church of Christ in Niles. She was also a member of AARP and the Lady Elks of the B.P.O. of Niles Elks #1322, and had participated in activities at the Niles Senior Center. She enjoyed golfing and bowling in Niles, and Camping with her family at Sturgis, Michigan. As a young lady, she had a remarkable career in the early days of softball.

On Jan. 12, 1941, in Niles she married Malcolm R. “Mickey” Walters. Mr. Walters served on the Niles City Fire Department, including many years as captain. They celebrated the 51st anniversary of their wedding just before he preceded her in death on March 24, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Edward C. Fenters and Gilbert R. Fenters.

June is survived by several nieces and nephews including Craig Fenters, Betty June Sneyd, and Scott Fenters; and by a circle of great friends including her neighbor, Nancy Wegner.

The Graveside Service for June Margaret Walters will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015, at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles with the Rev. Raymond Fulbright of Saint John’s United Church of Christ officiating. Contributions in memory of June may be made to Saint John’s United Church of Christ. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.

GALIEN - Jerry L. Strauss, 53, of Galien, Michigan, died peacefully at his home. Jerry was born November 7, 1961, to Russell C. and Mildred (Marsh) Strauss in Niles, Michigan, and graduated from River Valley High School in 1980. He married Cindy Tebo on September 15, 1990, in Niles, Michigan. He was employed at Kruger Plastic Products in Galien and Bridgman. Jerry liked watching John Wayne movies or sports on T.V. He also enjoyed fishing and reading. Survivors include his sister, Trudy (Terry) Cornwell of Union Pier, Michigan, and brother, Richard (Sylvia) Strauss of Three Oaks, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his father in 1973, mother in 1999, brother Robert in 2001, and wife Cindy on May 2, 2002. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Pobocik Funeral Home in Three Oaks, with the Reverend Raymond Babcock officiating. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles, Michigan. Visitation will be held from 6:00 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Diana Louise Stowe-Farris, 67, of Niles, passed away at her home on Monday, June 15, 2015.

Diana was born on July 15, 1947 to the late Lavall and Dorothy (Luther) Lane in South Bend, Indiana as one of eleven children. She retired from Tyler Refrigeration after more than 20 years of service.

Diana was an avid NASCAR fan, Jeff Gordan was her favorite driver. She also loved to watch University of Michigan football games.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lavall and Dorothy Lane; daughter, Rebecca Stowe; siblings, Betty Thomas, Nancy Amundson, Danny Lane, Thelma Worl, and Calvin “Sunny” Lane; and two beloved dogs Maggie and Raffie.

Diana is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Trent) Slates of Niles, her children Brandon Slates of Mishawaka and Justin Slates of Niles, and their children Reece Hensel and Mikalya Slates; husband James “Jim” Farris of Niles, his children John Farris of Niles and James (Laurie) Farris of Granger, Indiana and their children; Tiffany Farris, Rochelle Farris, Heather Farris, Jessica Farris, Zachary Farris and Nathan Farris, siblings; Shirley Joanis of Niles, Susan Horvath of South Bend, Terry (Ann) Lane of Niles and Kenny (Maryanne) Lane of Niles; brother, Richard (Sharon) Lane, of Niles, and her two min-pins Pepper and Cricket.

In keeping with Diana’s wishes she has been cremated and her family will be remembering her privately. She will be laid to rest at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles with her daughter, Becky.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Niles.

Arlie E. Sisk-Carpenter, 93, of Niles, passed away at Memorial Hospital in South Bend on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.

Arlie was born to the late Nelson and Alice (Everwine) Fry in Sulivan, Indiana.

In 1940 Arlie wed Arrad V. Sisk at a ceremony in Indiana. She worked for many years at Electrovoice and was an avid reader.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands Arrad V. Sisk and Joseph Carpenter; sons, Denzel Sisk, and Arrad V. Sisk Jr.; and siblings, Fred and William Fry and Pearl Eyre.

Arlie is survived by her daughters, Rose Evelyn (James) Smith of Niles and Ladonna (Dale) Smith of Niles; seven grandchildren, James (Charlene) Smith Jr., Michael (Valerie) Smith, Dale (Jodie) Smith Jr., Steven Smith, Cherie Sisk-Frances, Brenda (Joe) Porschart, Robert Sisk, seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Leona Helman of Terre Haute, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be held at Brown Funeral Home on Monday, June 15, 2015 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m with a prayer service concluding at the funeral home. Arlie will be interred at Silverbrook Cemetery in Niles at a graveside service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, Niles.
