BUCHANAN -- Mrs. Birdie Lee Nier, 62, of 2717 Lewis Dr., Niles, formerly of Buchanan, died at 7:15 p.m. Friday in her home after an illness of several months.

She was born Feb., 1, 1908 in Searcy, Ark. and came to Buchanan in 1960 from Searcy.

She was married to Herman J. Nier on March 21, 1944 in Little Rock, Ark.   He survives.   Also surviving is a son Buirl (Pete) (One line illegible) Laverne Morgan of Buchanan; a foster daughter, Mrs. Brenda C. Vonville of (illegible) Ind., three brothers, Hubert and Robert English, both of Buchanan, and Vernon English of Searcy; two sisters, Mrs. Elvie Wahlstrom of Buchanan and Mrs. Ruby M. Golfer of Toledo, Ohio; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Buchanan General Baptist Church.   Services are pending.

Arrangements are being handled by the Swem Funeral Home, Buchanan. 

Eliza Jane (Smith) Obier

Death of Mrs. Obier

From Monday's Star.

Mrs. Eliza Jane Obier, wife of Th. S. Obier, passed peacefully away early Sunday morning. She was 62 years, one month and three days of age and had been an invalid for the past three years. Her demise is attributed to senile paralysis.

Mrs. Obier was a pioneer resident of this vicinity, having come here with her husband 29 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Obier upon their arrival in Michigan first settled in Milton township, near Smith's chapel. Later on they removed to Barron Lake where they resided until a few years ago when they again moved to this city.

The deceased was born in Delaware and was married in the state 45 years ago. She was the mother of nine children, eight of whom, together with  her husband, survive her.

The children are all here with the single exception of one son who could not be located.

Those who were in attendance at the funeral were as follows: John, of Chicago; William, of Buffalo, N.Y.; Samuel, of Toledo; Mrs. Chas. Golden, of Chicago; Mrs. Fred Osler, of this city and Fred and Florence, also of this place.

Grace S. Pierce
Dec. 2, 1878-Sept. 27, 1952

Mrs. Grace S. Pierce, 124 North Thirteenth street, long active her as a member of the First Presbyterian Church, died at 8:12 a.m. today at Pawating Hospital, after an illness of three months.

Surviving are her husband, Robert C. Pierce; two daughters, Mrs. Wayne Markley, Detroit, and Mrs. Richard C. Williams, Niles; one son, Alderman Charles S. Pierce, Niles, and five grandchildren, also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Henry Barlow, Hudson, O.

Mrs. Pierce was born on Dec. 2, 1878, at Tallmadge, O., and came here from Belleville, N.J., in 1926.  She was married to her surviving husband on July 11, 1906, in Tallmadge, O.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was first president of the Presbyterian Woman’s Association, and was active in the Monday Reading Club, the Niles Club of Home Gardens, and the Fort St. Joseph Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Friends may call at the Kiger Funeral Home, Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday by the Rev. T. M. Greenhoe at the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

PIONEER PASSES AWAY

T. Ribble, for Nearly 75 years a Resident of Niles, Died This Morning

Another one of Niles' oldest and most highly respected pioneer residents has passed away. Tobias Ribble, for well nigh 75 years a resident of Niles and vicinity, passed from this life into the unknown beyond about four o'clock this morning at his residence on North Fourth street. Death was not unexpected.  Mr. Ribble had been gradually failing since last march and for the past three weeks had been seriously ill with a complication of dropsy and heart disease which resulted in death.

Mr. Ribble was born in Virginia in 1812 and when about fourteen years old came to Niles, since which time he has been a resident of this vicinity.

He had followed the occupation of a farmer, retiring from active life about fifteen years ago. He was a valuable member of the Methodist church.

When a young man he was married to Miss Rebecca Watson, and though she has long since passed away, nine children, the fruits of the union, are still living: Mrs. Willard of La Porte, Ind.; Mrs. Childs of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs. Gyer of Lafayette, Ind.; Amos, John and Edward and Mrs. Charles H. Johnson of this city.

The funeral will be held from the late residence on Fourth street Friday afternoon at 2 :30 o'clock, Rev. Chapman officiating.  Interment in Silver Brook cemetery.

Mrs. Cleia F. Richards
1879-March 1, 1970

NILES -- Mrs. Cleia F. Richards of 1798 Big Hill Road, Dayton, Ohio, formerly of Niles, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, after a short illness.

Born in Fennville, Mich., Mrs. Richards had lived at Dayton for 12 years.   Her husband, Harry C. Richards Sr., died 31 years ago.

Survivors include three sons, Harry C. Jr., Jack R. and Robert W., all of Dayton, and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Silverbrook Cemetery Mausoleum, with the Rev. Vincent A. Anderson of the Trinity Episcipal Church of Niles officiating. 

Fred A. Roy
June 1, 1876 - January 1, 1970

NILES - Fred A. Roy, 93, of 1806 Niles-Buchanan Road, died at 7:50 p.m. Thursday in Pawating Hospital.

A retired wood carver, Mr. Roy was born June 1, 1876 in Grand Rapids, Mich.,and had lived here 45 years, coming from Toledo, Ohio.   He married the former Mada Lewis, who survives, on Jan. 20, 1897, in Sturgis, Mich.

Also surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Blackburn, Niles, three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Pifer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ray Cunningham of the First Baptist Church officiating.   Burial will be in Silverbrook Cemetery.

Friends may call after 7 tonight at the funeral home.
