Nathaniel H. Bacon, prominent Niles attorney, died this morning at 8:45 at his home, 16 North Fifth Street. His death followed a few days illness with pneumonia. Mr. Bacon went home ill from his office on Saturday afternoon after consulting with his physician and apparently suffering with symptoms of the grip. However, pneumonia developed rapidly and had the fatal termination at the hour stated.

Mr. Bacon was a son of Joseph and Harriett Holley Bacon. He was born on Dec. 12, 1867 on what was know as the Bacon homestead for many years and located on S. Third St., opposite the present home of Dr. F.N. Bonine. The home was in later years destroyed by fire. He was on of five children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bacon and all were born on the same homestead. Mr. Bacon’s grandfather, Nathaniel Bacon, was one of the prominent justices of Michigan of an early day, and was one time a judge of the supreme court of Michigan. Each of his five sons were also lawyers and Nathaniel Bacon, the only son of Joseph Bacon, followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the choice of vocations.

Mr. Bacon attended the Niles public school and continued his studies in Shattuck school in Furlbault, Minn., before going to Ann Arbor to take a course in the law department of the University of Michigan. He was graduated form the University of Michigan with the class of 1891. He immediately returned to Niles and began his career in law in the office of his uncle, Edward Bacon, a career which he continued until his death.

On May 20, 1904, he was married in Niles to Miss Kate Gerberich, a member of a pioneer family of this community who survives him. Besides the widow, Mr. Bacon is survived by three sisters, Mrs. George Sheldon of Rock Island, Ill, Mrs. Fred B. Crosby of Evanston, Ill, and Mrs. Adloph Panhurst of Mt. Vernon, NY. Two nieces and two nephews also survive. They were George Sheldon, Mt. Vernon, NY, Mrs. Charles Blanchard, Mrs. Rustine Carrier and Frederick Crosby, all of Chicago.

Mr. Bacon was member for many years of the Presbyterian Church and at the time of his death was a member of the board of Trustees. He was an usher in the church and he filled this office with graciousness and for years it had been a pleasure of many worshippers in the church, who now live elsewhere, to be welcomed and greeted by Mr. Bacon., He was an excellent church official and his judgment and executive ability in his contributions to the matters of church business ere highly valued.

Mr. Bacon was a member of the Berrien County Bar Association.

While the funeral plans are not completed, the services will be held on Monday. Rev. G. W. Simon, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will take place in Silver Brook Cemetery.

Mrs. Crosby, a sister of Mr. Bacon, arrived in Niles yesterday afternoon and other relatives are expected tomorrow or Sunday.
