Nichols, Martin L.

Martin L. Nichols

Aug 28, 1866-June 21, 1919*

 Suicide; result of broken health.

Martin L. Nichols, 50 years old, committed suicide some time last night by taking a quantity of Paris green. For some time. Mr. Nichols has been in poor health and has gradually been losing his sight until the last few months he was nearly blind. The condition of his health and being unable to secure employment is thought to be the cause of his act. Mr. Nichols had made his home for several years with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jennings. Mrs. Jennings being a niece and his only living relative. They have resided in Niles during the past two years, coming here from Benton Harbor. The body was found near the river bank just above the French Paper mills at the place familiarly known as “the hobo camp.” The officials were notified and an examination as made at once and the body removed to the morgue at the Price Undertaking parlors. Neither Mr. and Mrs. Jennings had seen Mr. Nichols since Wednesday morning when he left the residence, saying he was going out to find work. He had no money with him how he was able to secure the poison is a mystery.
